Recently, I was going through some health related articles when I found out how important it is for us to know about the symptoms of various medical conditions that affects us as humans. Knowing these symptoms on time helps us seek medical assistance early enough to avoid more complications.

Diabetes is one of these chronic medical conditions that affects us. Apparently, diabetes affects how our body processes glucose/sugar and we have two types; the type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Irrespective of what type of diabetes it is, we will be looking at just six (6) signs that shows you are prone to diabetes.

  1. Weakness: If you notice that you get weak frequently without even doing anything, or you find yourself feeling dull, it's possible that you are going through the early stages of type 2 diabetes and this is due to the body's inability to utilise glucose for energy.

  2. Frequent Thirst: If you find out that you drink lots of water and you still find yourself being thirsty, then you are probably in the early stages of type 2 diabetes. You should go and get yourself checked because urinating frequently can lead to dehydration which causes the frequent thirst for water.

  3. Frequent Urination. I think everybody already knows this one. See, if you find out that every minute you are going to the bathroom to urinate, then the sugar in your bloodstream is extremely high. Please go and get yourself checked in the hospital.

  4. Blurry Vision: If you check that in your family, many people don't have eye problem, but you find yourself having blurry vision, then something is wrong somewhere. I am not saying that people who have eye problem in their family cannot be diabetic, I am saying that this one is different because it comes and goes. If that's the case with you, then it's a sign of diabetes because high blood sugar can affect the lenses in your eyes, leading to blurred vision.

  5. Slow Healing: There is reduction of speed when it comes to healing of wounds, cuts and even infection. This is one of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes and when you are in this stage, then it is already getting too late.

  6. Swollen Feet: Another sign that shows up in some cases is swollen feet. If you find your legs swollen, it is never a good sign. It means a lot of bad things, including the diabetes.

It is important to know that the people with diabetes may not experience noticeable symptoms especially in the early stages but regular checkups with a doctor and blood sugar monitoring are essential for diabetes early detection and effective management.

You can still self check yourself to see if you have diabetes by checking your urine. Whenever you urinate outside, if ants gather around your urine, then your sugar level is very high. Alternatively, you could actually just taste your urine and if it is sour or salty, then you are good but if it is sweet, run to the hospital as fast as you can.

If you feel I missed any important symptoms, let me know in the comment section.
