Where is our Humanity?

Having compassion, sympathy and consideration on others can be seen as being humane, but where is our humanity? I have always believed that before anything else, the first thing everyone and anyone should consider is humanity.

This afternoon, I heard a story that really got me thinking hard. I really wonder if the commandment of loving your neighbour as you love yourself still exist. It seems the spirit of sympathy and humanity has gone on exile because humans do not seem to have sympathy on others anymore. What's our world really turning into?

My neighbour came back from school yesterday sad and restless. She is a teacher in one of the secondary schools in delta state, Nigeria. When I asked her what happened, she narrated a tale of a young lady who has been sleeping in their school premises for a week now. Everyone thought she was actually mentally unstable, but it was later discovered that she was perfectly normal.

The school principal spoke with this middle-aged lady. She said she doesn't have anywhere to stay and that's why she decided to make the school her abode. She also said she has been sexually abused by the young men around at night as she had no power to fight them off. She could barely speak, but she ended up mustering that she was that she had no one and no where to go to.

She looked so tired and weak as if she was about to die. The principal bought her food of which she couldn't even eat. My neighbour on hearing the story went out to see the young tattered lady. When my neighbour tried talking to her, all she asked of my neighbour was just a cup of water to drink.

The cup of water was given to her, but she could barely drink it. My neighbour said she managed to make the lady drink the water a little, but the condition of the lady remained the same.

The Principal of the school had to drive down to the ministry of health that same day to report the case. Sadly, the supposed ministry said that they only deal with issues like that if it relates to dead bodies. The principal tried his best to make these people understand the urgency of the issue, but it seems to be a wasted effort, and so he came back disappointed and sad.

Sadly, the young lady died this morning. I believe the supposed ministry of health can now come and carry her remains since that's the only thing they deal on.

My neighbour felt awful, and she is still feeling bad about the death of this young lady. I couldn't even console her because I don't know what to say or do. The only thing I could tell her was that she tried her best because its difficult seeing people helping such people. At least she went to the lady and even offered her a helping hand, while others said the lady might be a prostitute that's suffering from an incurable disease.

No one is born rich or poor, and I don't think anyone is born to suffer. I believe its just circumstances and situations that made them the way they are. We are all humans, and we owe it a duty to help others in their difficult and challenging situations. The little you do, can help save a life. You don't have to be very rich before you help someone.

I believe that lady would still be alive had it be the ministry of health took it upon themselves to look into the situation. She would still be alive if someone had decided to take her to the hospital and cater for her. But sadly, we have all lost our spirit of humanity.

I applaud my neighbour and the principal for the care they showed towards this lady. Should we have more people like them, I believe this world would be a better place.

Such a sad story. If not that she couldn't speak, definitely she must have a family she belonged to, no matter how far. It's a pity the ministry of health couldn't help but God will reward the principal and your neighbor who did their bit.

Humanity still has hope with people like the neighbour and principal. It is up to the new generation to make the world a better place.

Sometimes it is not that people don't want to help. But because they don't have the capacity to do so.

I hope we will turn out to be better people in the near future.

I found you through @dreemport.

Thanks so much for your comment.. Just as you said, let's just believe that we can still exhibit that humane act..

You are talking about capacity?.... Bro, there is always a way a person can help. Money isn't everything.. That's just what I believe...

Well... capacity for me seems like they can't even help themselves. So they can't help others.

Please take care of yourself first. Then care for others. It's like when you are on a plane and there is an emergency landing. You should help yourself first before helping the child.

That's the concept that I am thinking about.

If you still don't agree with me. Let's agree to disagree.

Sometimes, helping might bring more problems. Not all the time. We do what we can. When we are starving, are we going to give away our food so we starve to death? That's something to ponder.

Agree to disagree??.. 😂 😂.. I think I understand perfectly your angle on this.

The food example won't work here because you can share your food with the person and won't starve to death.

But I understand your point... However humanity should be considered always.

I agree that there is always a way to help others and not just in terms of money. We can help by getting some other person to help.

In the end, if there is a will, there is a way.

You wonder why the billionaires in the world won't give back to society.

If every single billionaire on the planet gave away millions to help the poor, there will not be poverty in the world.

Agree?

Agreed 🤝

And this is the same thing I am saying.. Why can't the billionaires help the poor so poverty can be eradicated?.. I guess they still want to have people they can trample on.

Like you rightly said, where there is a will, there is always a way...

Such a sad and troubling story of that poor lady
I to applaud your Friend and the principal
It’s shocking that in many government institutions they will only take action once a person dies

The problem we are having is the government. I believe the lady would have still been alive had it been the authorities followed the principal down to the school when he went there to complain. Its really sad things like this are happening everyday and no one is doing anything about it...

We need to wake up!

and for sure yes we need to wake up

Hi, I am @khoola and like @victorholyo I came here through @dreemport

I read it such a tragedy, I can't help but shudder at the thought of the ministry of health just turning a blind eye on it... Ghad, although I don't want to say it, but at least she doesn't have to suffer any more.

No worries man, you, your friend and the principal has already prove there is hope for us yet.

On another amgle, you are right.. She won't have to suffer anymore since she has gone to rest.

The angle am just so concerned about right now is that of lack of human sympathy on the side of humanity. People only care about themselves right now and not about any other person forgetting we are meant to love our neighbours as we love ourselves.

Every one of us do our part. Slowly, the world will change. Believe brother.

Exactly.. If only we can play our role, I believe the world will be a perfect place.

How sad is this?

You have a very valid point to ask "where is our humanity?" It is as if everybody is just living for themselves. If they can't benefit in some way from knowing you, they are just not interested. It's not about the person anymore, it's about what they can get from you...and this is obviously the climax of a typical example of that. Just because she had nowhere to go and was hungry, assumptions are being made instead of reaching out.

But I take my hat off to the principal and your neighbor for at least trying and for physically reaching out in an attempt to help this poor lady.

I got here via @dreemport.

I am so glad you understood my point. People only want to help those they can benefit from and if they won't benefit from you, they won't even dare to help you.

They don't want to help her and that's why they were making assumptions about her.

Thanks so much for your comment.

Quite a touching tale. I don't understand some humans, they see a person at such state and all they could say is that she's a prostitute that's suffering from an incurable ailment.

They say that to feel fine. They want to avert themselves o guilt of not caring.

No one deserves to die that way, not even a prostitute.

Quite sad.

She at least saw love in the principal and your neighbour before passing on.

@dreemport brought me here.

Exactly, no one deserves to dies that way. She deserves better than this.. But its all well.. Just because they don't want to help, they are making excuses.
