42.1% of women report changes in the menstrual cycle after the covid vaccine

This is the first maxi study on menstrual cycle alterations following covid vaccination. Created by Kathryn Clancy, professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois Urbana together with Katharine Lee, professor of anthropology at the University of Tulane, the study underlines how the doctors who have dealt with the subject, after having collected the first reports on post-vaccination menstrual changes, they often showed contempt for patients' concerns.

An attitude that the research team wanted to remedy with an ad hoc survey, launched in April 2021.

A survey from which it emerges that at the beginning of 2021 there were many case, of childbearing age and not, following the injection. But since, in general, vaccine studies do not investigate cycle-related aspects, the reports have been largely ignored.

Starting from this observation, the group of American researchers has launched a study on over 35,000 participants, which offers the most comprehensive assessment conducted so far on the menstrual changes experienced in the first 2 weeks post-vaccination, explain the authors in 'Science Advances'.

We focused on those who had regular periods or no longer had them, or because they were postmenopausal or because they were on hormone therapy that suppresses the cycle.

The survey found that 42.1% of respondents reported a more intense menstrual flow after vaccination. An alteration experienced in the first 7 or 14 days following the injection.

The authors of the study would like to clarify that since this is a survey based on self-reported experiences, the study cannot establish a causal link between anti-covid vaccination and alterations in the menstrual cycle, nor be considered predictive of possible side effects in the general population.

Of course, however, such data may indicate potential associations between a person's reproductive history, hormonal status, demographics and menstrual changes following vaccination.

The analysis indicated that those who had been pregnant were more likely to report heavier post-vaccine bleeding. The respondents without menstruation, because they were on hormonal treatment, experienced bleeding after vaccination. The effect was also reported by more than 70% of those who used long-acting reversible contraception.

These side effects are believed to be linked to an increase in immune-related inflammatory pathways.

The real number of cases around the world of women having altered their menstrual cycles is probably much higher.

We know that talking about adverse vaccine effects is taboo these days.
