The controversy around Qatar is raging on the eve of the world championship

There is just over a week left for the World Cup in Qatar, which will begin on 20th November. It is a historic edition, because the competition will be held for the first time in the winter period and the national championships will be on hiatus early. It is also, however, a debated edition due to the assignment to the emirate, not only because of its poor football history but above all because it has been criticized on the subject of human rights, corruption and terrorism. In particular, Qatar has been in the sights since the start of the organizational machine to prepare for the World Cup. A work that has made it possible to build modern and technological stadiums in record time. To do so, however, the rights of workers, almost totally migrants, coming from Southeast Asia, would have been violated.

The emirate is accused by non-governmental organizations of having enslaved and exploited workers to the extreme, so much so that around 6,500 would have died, according to the British newspaper Guardian, due to poor working conditions. In addition, the workers would have suffered violence and received poor wages.

However, there is not only the theme of work. Another accusation is that relating to the lack of respect for civil rights: Qatar sees homosexual people as evil and exemplary punishments are provided for those who should show their homosexuality or simply support the LGBT rights. The ambassador of the 2022 World Cup, the former Qatari footballer Khalid Salman, during an interview with the German television station Zdf defined homosexuality as a mental illness, arousing the indignation of the German Foreign Minister, who called horrible statements. Salman added:

During the World Cup a lot of things will come to our country, like gays. The most important aspect is the following: we will accept all those who come here. But they will have to accept our rules.

That is, therefore, avoid manifesting one's homosexuality openly.

Qatar has also addressed Europe directly, responding to criticism of human rights. Foreign Minister Al Thani called European countries arrogant and racist in an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Al Thani said Westerners think Qatar is not intellectually or culturally prepared to host a World Cup.

Al Thani also underlined an evident contradiction on the part of Westerners and addressed Germany in particular. The Qatari minister said:

The German government seems to have no problems when energy cooperation with Qatar is at stake.

What Al Thani says is that, when it comes to economic interests, especially oil and gas, of which Qatar is rich), Westerners seem to forget about the violation of human rights. They protest and criticize the emirate, but then, for business, they still go to play the 2022 World Cup. In the interview, the Qatari exponent once again underlined how the state is trying to improve working conditions after the start of a labor reform. But there are many other criticisms: they range from the lack of freedom for women, to the financing of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, to the accusations of corruption for the assignment of the World Cup.

I know quite a few people that are claiming they are going to boycott the event but I really don't think they will. Those tickets are always going to sell and I expect there will be a slight drop in global viewership but some people love the game so much that I don't think anything would make them not tune in.

Yeah, and even if some thousands of people are gonna boycott, there are other billions watching it anyways, a lot of people don't even know all these things...the only real boycott would be big teams like Brazil,France, etc refusing to partecipate but we know it will NEVER happen
