A very Kim Gary afternoon

Well, this isn't exactly what you expect me to put up during a family trip to Penang. However, under this special circumstances, especially the kids are at their teen age, it is very hard to impress them with traditional food. I'm not saying who to blame, and obviously the parents is the one to be. Don't mention, totally guilty about building such eating habits to the kids.

The last we visited Plaza Gurney was 11 years ago. We choose to visit this mall because it's about couple of yards away from our hotel. After the crazily warm morning session at the church, we decided to drive back into the island for our lunch. I told my girl I wanted to show her what a Hong Kong style restaurant looks like and their food taste like, so I have Kim Gary in mind.

I got myself a jumbo set lunch to replenish my calories after a sweaty morning at the church. And come the salsa sausage which I personally enjoyed it very much. I'm not a Vege guy, but I do appreciate good salad in between hot dogs or burgers.

The boy as usual, got himself a French toast. Not sure how he got addicted to a piece of butter melting on top kind of eating style. He seems attracted to anything with a piece of butter melting on top of food. When I asked if he loves it, it said yeah it was alright, same like the coffee shop near our house. Blehhhh... Which seriously disappointing me because this one cost almost doubled the price than the one near our house 😅 I was hoping it taste double the tastiness than the one near our house.

The girl ordered a not surprising instant noodle. Well, I think again it runs in our blood. We go to Indian shop and order fried instant noodle, when rainy days we go to shop and ask for curry instant noodle to keep warm, so going to Hong Kong style restaurant, naturally she ordered a luncheon meat instant noodle. She let me had a bite on the luncheon meat, it's super tasty yo! I wonder what brand of luncheon meat they're using! The noodles are springy enough, but the egg slightly overcooked. Not to an extend of burnt smell, but the egg white become hard and it does take some cardio effort to shew it.

Home minister ordered a panseered meat rice for lunch. I'm not saying if I enjoyed it much, it's simple but the way they cooked make the rice really standout as a combination. Slightly salty, and the meat was soft. I took a spoon of that and almost swallowed the spoon. Very appetising!

Let's not forget, Hong Kong and Malaysia has some similarity in terms of milk tea, since both of our countries are British colonial back in the days. You can't say you've been to the Hong Kong restaurant if you don't order their milk tea. So, I leave the task to home minister to do it, and as usual she doesn't like it. Prefer to drink the Indian shop tea for ¼ of the price.

The girl ordered a lemon tea, and since lemon tea are the same everywhere, so I did not include that into the picture. I got myself a Cham(romanised Malay language of Campur, which means mixed), a mixture of milk tea and milk coffee. The only thing I didn't take is the sugar. The boy got himself a cup of Milo Blended, so huge that in the end he couldn't finish it.

Last but not least, out of finger itchiness, I also added a mango dessert with coconut milk. Seriously, I don't believe the coconut milk where that sweet even with the mango infused. It's a little too sweet for my liking, but the sweetness is still manageable.

It is pretty challenging for the past 2 years, especially this kind of multinational franchise restaurant. Ping me again on your next visit, we will visit this restaurant in Mid Valley Megamall.

For some reason this post reminds me of a Dutch friend that lives here in Cambodia. We don't see him often, but when we do he'll take us to an Italian restaurant and order fried rice or take us to a Khmer restaurant and order spaghetti, always surprising choices.

I think french toast would be a hard dish to make fancy, perhaps by using the highest grade butter and best sliced bread available 🤔. French toast was one of the first things I learned to cook by myself as a young kid.

Now that you mentioned, it is hard to "differentiate" a good french toast by textbook style. However, I do believe it takes skill to cook, the timing, the egg wash they used, last but not least the syrup itself make a whole lot of difference. We got one using caramelized coconut syrup 😜
