Nasi Lemak Bumbung

Howdy partners?! It's been awhile. Life has been tough, but am glad I finally have time to introduce one of my most recent visit at the backstreet food. I hope you bookmark this page and make it your next check-in location if you decided to visit Malaysia.

Nasi Lemak is a traditional dish usually well known in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. The name Bumbung, was a little out of the blue though. I means "roof". And the street hawker actually operate roofless for many years.

I know I've visited this place on and off for 2 decades already, ever since I was a college kid. Back then, they use the roof of the next door bank, put table there and sell. Now, they rented a shop near by, but decided to operate at the back alley.

Their main dish is of course no other than nasi Lemak, the steam coconut milk fragrant rice with sambal. However, my phone spoilt the photograph due to low light. So you're going to make do with my favourite dish, Indomie goreng 🤣 Pardon my Indonesian friends, one of my best Malaysian street food originated from Indonesia.

Their ayam goreng is very similar to ayam rempah. I didn't know this was their signature dish until couple of years ago when I had a chance to try it. My usual dish is the instant noodle, and I can whack up to 5 noodles in each meal 🤣

Satey wasn't the original menu, but I tell you this is not bad too. The BBQ master has been co-operating with Bumbung for many years, and they sure know what their customer wants. It's smokey, but not dry. It's moist but not greasy. If there's any more improvement they should make, it will be the peanut sauce they use. I think the peanut has been crushed until too fine. I prefer if they leave the chunks of peanuts for me to bite.

Last but not least, they serve premix iced milk tea, we call it "teh ais". If you can't take sweet, please order for hot drink and ask for "kosong", so they don't put sugar in it. I don't usually drink this sweet, but I will be glad to have this to go with the spicy sambal.

I'm not going to send you the address, since it's the back alley. Navigate your way from Google maps, and eventually you'll find a spot that is so crowded and happening. I think before you reach there, you could probably smell the coconut rice fragrance from far already.

Oh on a side note, it was too spicy, so we went to the nearby ice cream shop, splurge spending on some overpriced designer ice cream. Will I recommend it? Yes, if you got nothing better to do, and found the sambal too spicy. But then again, why spend your food budget here? Might as well get a fresh coconut at Bumbung?
