The fifth mark slowly began to appear on the key, eventually forming a symbol. Wez was confused; he never expected another mark to appear. Besides, the forest was silent, the girl was gone, and the phrase in the book read “If you want to know who finished the song, look for the man who could never play it”—words that were very brief, and the strangest part was that the same mark was in the book; when he put the two things together, a word appeared in red that read “SILENCE.” Wez realized they weren’t talking about the forest; they were talking about a place.
The young man began walking among the trees, and every time he moved a few meters forward, the fifth mark would flash. Finally, he reached a small stone structure; the wooden door was covered in moss, and above it were five small slits. Wez took the key, and the first four marks lit up; however, the fifth remained off, and he wondered, “Why isn’t it working?” At that very moment, three notes sounded, then the fourth, and finally the fifth note—which startled Wez, as it had gone from being a melody to a sequence.
I looked through the book, where they were no longer chords but instructions, since each chord corresponded to one of the marks on the clef, so little by little I put it together, and finally the fifth—and that’s when the door opened. The place was completely empty, but on one of the walls there was a single photograph—a photo taken on the same night, the same date, in the same forest—but in the photograph there were three people: the guitarist, the girl, and a third man, a man Wez had never seen before, who was standing there holding an instrument in his hands. There was also a short caption that read “He was here, but he could never play the song.” As he finished reading that, he heard a voice tell him, “Because he didn’t have the hands to do it, but he did have something they had forgotten—”
Wez was confused, since each phrase pointed to something different and at the same time made everything drag on; moreover, the next page revealed another phrase “The song wasn’t finished by the one who wrote it. It was finished by the one who remembered how it ended.” After that, the room went dark, and the same melody from the cemetery began to play again, but this time it lasted much longer—about five minutes, corresponding to the fifth mark. When the fifth mark ended, the melody broke off, revealing a short phrase that read: “Now remember where you first heard this song.” — Wez fell deep in thought, since it hadn’t been at the cemetery, nor in the forest—it had been many years earlier, in a place he’d been trying to forget for a long time. And for the first time since that night began, Wez realized that perhaps he, too, had been there.
