After receiving their credentials, the three children were very happy; now they had to wait for the big day of the contest. In the meantime, they rested and rehearsed so that everything would go smoothly. A few days later, the moment they’d been dreaming of finally arrived, so Charlie, Lucas, and Sofía were up early, getting their things ready and getting closer and closer to living a once-in-a-lifetime dream—a moment filled with excitement but also nerves about what was about to happen.
When they arrived at the venue, the three children were surprised by the number of people there—participants, families, and the event organizers—making it almost impossible to move around. From a distance, they could see a large stage filled with lights and a small table where the judges were waiting for the moment to begin evaluating each performance.
The three children looked at each other and realized they had arrived at the place they had worked so hard to reach. Lucas clutched his banjo case tightly, Sofía tried to stay calm, and Charlie remembered his grandfather’s words and smiled. So finally, the performances began, and little by little, 10, 20, 30, and 40 acts went by, and there were fewer and fewer left. The three children sat waiting for their turn, while also learning from each performance—some of which received loud applause, others saw the performers step off the stage with a smile, and still others seemed just as nervous as they were.
The performances continued at a steady pace—50, 60, 65, 70. At that moment, Charlie looked at his badge again, and that number 75 seemed very high, but it represented the train ride, the scenery, their arrival in the city, the call to his grandfather, the rehearsals, and all the moments when they’d imagined what it would be like to stand in front of an audience. Until they heard, “Contestant number 75!”
The three of them stood completely still for a few seconds, not knowing what to do; they certainly had to move forward, so they all stood up to go on stage. From the stage, everything looked different—the lights were shining on them, and the judges were staring intently at them. So Lucas took out his banjo, Sofía took her place, and Charlie thought of his grandfather. Once all three were ready, the audience fell silent, ready to make history.
