Sounds under the bridge | History [ENG-ESP]

After his last job of dropping each musician off at their homes, driver Theo began to hear banging noises in the early hours of the morning, when exhaustion blurred the line between real and imagined sounds. They always occurred at the same time, on the same road, and in the same place, when he was at the last traffic light before taking the bridge. They were metallic, sharp knocks that did not seek to attract attention, but were persistent enough to remain in Theo's mind. At first, he ignored them and thought that the bridge was creaking, that the metal was contracting in the cold, or that it was one of those horror stories about the city.

But every time he passed that spot night after night, the knocks repeated themselves, maintaining an irregular, almost human rhythm. They weren't loud, but they were constant, as if someone wanted to convey a message to him at that time of night. And what was most disturbing was that every time they appeared, the bridge vibrated slightly under the wheels, and Theo was afraid to go out to work.

One night, curiosity finally overcame fear, so he stopped the vehicle at that exact spot. The only light was the moonlight, it was bitterly cold, and his hands were shaking with fear. He walked in several directions, but what surprised him was that under the bridge he found the remains of crashed cars: bent doors, rusty brake discs, shock absorbers buried in the damp earth, and behind all those parts was a drummer playing the wreckage as if it were instruments. Each beat resonated through the steel of the bridge, as if the structure itself were responding, and that was where the sounds were coming from.

There was no rhythm, he just played over and over again, yet he seemed to be holding something bigger than the musician himself. The driver was surprised and understood that each beat was not a creative act to make music, but an act of restraint, since the bridge was not held up by the concrete, but by the sound that kept it awake.

From that night on, the driver crossed the bridge with a new awareness, and it was the only way to get home. Each beat was a guarantee, but each silence was a warning. However, as long as the rhythm continued, the road would exist. Everything changed one early morning when he stopped hearing it. There was a great silence, as if someone had turned off the drummer. There were no beats, no echo, absolutely nothing. As Theo drove on, he felt the bridge heavy, tired like an old body no longer supported by its bones.

In the distance, he noticed many cracks where there had been none before, until he reached a point where the road shook, as if it were about to collapse. The driver got out, checked, and noticed that the drummer had not disappeared: he had simply stopped playing. And without the rhythm, the bridge no longer remembered its shape. The metal groaned, the asphalt opened up, the road began to give way, taking with it everything that still trusted it.

In the end, it was not noise that announced the disaster, but silence. That silence that comes when no one is left to keep the rhythm.
