Letting Go Does Not Mean You Did Not Care
There is a version of letting go that gets misunderstood constantly. The one where you finally stop holding onto something or someone that was not working, and people around you interpret the release as evidence that you did not care enough. That if you really loved the thing or the person you would have held on longer, tried harder, refused to accept the ending.
But caring and holding on are not the same thing. Sometimes the most honest expression of how much something mattered is the willingness to let it go with dignity rather than dragging it past its natural end out of refusal to accept what is true.
I have let go of things that mattered enormously to me. A friendship that had become something unrecognisable from what it started as. A version of my own future i had been attached to for years that stopped being the right direction. A relationship that had real love inside it but also a fundamental incompatibility that love alone could not resolve no matter how long either of us wanted it to.
Letting those things go was not evidence they did not matter. It was sometimes the hardest thing about how much they did.
The grip we maintain on things past their time is often less about love and more about fear. Fear of the empty space the thing will leave. Fear that letting go means the time it took was wasted. Fear that there will not be another version of this good thing somewhere ahead.
Letting go makes space. Not immediately, not painlessly, but eventually. Space for something that actually fits the current version of your life. Space for honest relationships rather than ones maintained by refusal to acknowledge what is real.
Caring does not require you to hold on past the point of truth. Sometimes it requires the opposite.
Letting go with love is still love.
