Growing Rice ~ Spring in Japan

Flowers aren't the only new things to see in spring. We also have new rice growing everywhere.

This is actually in the middle of the city. I imagine it's a group of farmers who have so far refused to sell out to real estate companies that want to build houses—a not uncommon situation in modern Japan. The greatest example of which is a single farmer whose farm is in the middle of Narita Airport. As I understand it, the airport has offered him millions of dollars over the years for his land, but so far he refuses to sell out.

Anyway, back to this photo. It's always pleasant taking a walk through this area to see the rice fields growing. Before they drain the water, mosquitos are pretty extreme, though.
