You Should Laugh More・Ten Great Moments in Comedy

avatar

You've probably heard that laughing is good for us. Research has shown that laughing reduces blood pressure, relieves stress, improves the immune system, stimulates the organs, and.. well, so on. Point is, there are a lot of benefits to laughter.

Is it any wonder comedians life so long? There are of course bad sides to being a comedian. Doing stand-up is incredibly stressful. There's a reason Steve Martin went completely grey when he was still in his 30s. And when and if success hits, there is the drug abuse that sometimes comes from having a troubled past combined with having too much money. As Robin Williams famously said, "Cocaine is God's way of telling you you make too much money." John Belushi and Chris Farley come to mind. Then there was Johnny Carson who according to most reports was miserable offscreen and smoked like a chimney. But more often than not, when a comedian doesn't have any of those bad habits, they seem to live pretty good lives.

But anyway, I thought today we'd look at ten really funny moments to make you laugh. Because none of us laugh enough and we really should change that. I'm not going to say top ten, because that would be impossible. I'm just going to pick out ten clips that I think are funny and I hope you do too.

  1. Who's on First
This is of course not only their best known routine but it's considered one of the greatest comedy routines of all time. Classic word play. Even if you are from an unfortunate country that doesn't love baseball (I joke 😜), I think you can appreciate this routine.
  2. The Four Yorkshiremen
This was pre-Python, but in later years Python has preformed it many times. It's priceless as they each try to one-up each other and their stories get more and more ridiculous.
  3. Jim taking Driver's Test (Yellow)
The jokes leading up to the test are dumb sitcom jokes, but Christopher Lloyd's performance is great. Then when he starts to take the test is when it really starts. The test is also a dumb sitcom joke, but Lloyd is able to sell it so well.
  4. Kramer and Newman Rickshaw
There are hundreds of Seinfeld moments I could choose from, but most rely on some inside humor that might be hard to understand for non-Americans. This one I think stands on its own quite well.
  5. What's the Password - Marx Brothers
So many Marx Brothers scenes are great, but for my money the bests exchanges always involve Groucho outsmarting Chico. Here's one of the best.
  6. Faulty Towers
*We did not start it!" "Yes, you did—you invaded Poland!" 🤣
  7. Gene Wilder Bookcase Scene
Young Frankenstein is such a great film, full of so many funny moments. This moment here is more slapstick but it works so well.
  8. What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us
The Life of Brian is full of so many good moments. This one is one of the best.
  9. Lucy and Ethel Wrap Chocolate
Here's a classic TV moment. This isn't as laugh out loud as the others, but it always brings a smile to my face watching Lucy struggle against the speed of the chocolate in her losing battle.
  10. Black Jeopardy w/Tom Hanks - SNL
Among the tons of humorless skits SNL gives us every year, they are always a few gems that actually hit. This was one of them.

Well there we go, ten great comedy scenes. Of course this list could go much further than ten. It could be almost endless! On that note, I am thinking about starting a weekly post à la @ablaze's three tune tuesday and hoping others join me in making these posts. Like I wrote at the beginning, we could all use more laughter in our lives. Maybe like with three tune tuesday, I would limit this to just three so we wouldn't be overwhelmed. Anyone feel like joining in and writing a three comedy scenes weekly post? Will have to think of a clever name for it. If anyone is interested, maybe I'll put up a few Hive SBI per week for a winner and I'll accept donations for anyone who wants to add to the pot.

Let me know your thoughts on if this is a good or bad idea, something you would be interested in or rubbish? Maybe I could get @raymondspeaks to throw in a few Cine each week? I could probably manage to have some FUN and/or LOLZ donated too. Will have to see how much interest there is before we can count on any donations, anyway, so let me know in the comments what you think.
