Diy!!! How to Cut and Sew a Bishop-Collar A-Shape Gown

Today, I’ll be showing you the step-by-step process I used to achieve this beautiful Bishop-Collar A-Shape Gown, featuring a front zipper, convenient side pockets, full lining, and elasticated sleeves. I’ll take you through the cutting and sewing process clearly and in detail, so you can easily follow along and recreate this elegant design.

Materials: Ankara or your chosen fabric, lining fabric, thread, zipper, elastic band, tape measure, ruler, tailor’s chalk, scissors, pins, sewing machine, and iron.

Measurements: Shoulder 15 inches, bust 38 inches, waist 32 inches, waist length 16 inches, full length 43 inches, sleeve length 18 inches, and round sleeve 12 inches.

Bodice cutting:
Fold the fabric with the right sides facing inward. Mark the shoulder using half of 15 inches, which is 7½ inches, from the folded edge. Divide the bust by four: 38 ÷ 4 = 9½ inches. Add 1½ inches ease, making 11 inches. Mark this across the bust line.
From the shoulder, measure the required armhole depth and draw a smooth armhole curve. Mark the waistline at 16 inches. For the waist, divide 32 by four to get 8 inches. Add 1½ inches ease. Since this is an A-shape gown, do not fit the waist tightly. From the waist, gradually extend the side seam outward toward the 43-inch hem to create the flowing A-line shape.
Add 1 inch seam allowance around the shoulder and side seams, and 1½ inches for the hem.
Keep the front center straight because the zipper will be installed there. Cut the front into two pieces at the center front.

Back cutting:
Fold the fabric and cut the back on the fold. Use the same shoulder, bust, waist, armhole, and 43-inch length measurements. Shape the side seam gradually outward from the waist to the hem. Add the same seam allowances. The back should remain straight while following the A-shape shown.

Full lining:
Cut the lining using the same front and back bodice patterns. I make the lining slightly shorter than the gown, finishing about 1 inch above the outer hem. Transfer the zipper opening accurately to the lining. Cut the lining sleeves using the sleeve pattern as well. Finish the lining edges.

After that join the shoulders when attaching the lining to the dress I leave the neckline on stitch because of the bishop collar I'll be attaching.

Front zipper: Mark the center front clearly. Place the zipper face down along one front edge and stitch. Close the zipper, match the opposite side, pin it, and stitch. Check that both sides meet evenly before completing the stitching.

Bishop collar
Attach the bishop collar by measuring neckline all round after joining the shoulder and cutting a collar strip with seam allowance. Interface it, join the ends, then sew it around the neckline. Press the collar so it stands smoothly .

Side pockets:
Cut two pocket bags 12 inches deep and 7 inches wide. Mark the pocket opening on both side seams around the hip area. Sew each pocket bag to its opening, press it toward the front, then join the pocket bags securely. Continue the side seam above and below the pocket opening.

Elastic sleeve area: Measure the wearer’s arm comfortably where the elastic will sit. Cut the elastic slightly smaller than that measurement so it gathers gently without being too tight. Create a casing at the sleeve hem, insert the elastic, join its ends securely, and close the casing. Spread the gathers evenly around the sleeve and attach it to the dress.

Press the entire gown, checking the zipper, collar, pockets, sleeve gathers, lining, and A-shape. The finished gown should have a clean front zipper, bishop collar, full lining, roomy side pockets, and softly gathered elastic sleeves matching. Finally the result is amazing
