A couple of weeks ago I decided to start watching this HBO series from the dark comedy genre which turned out to be a huge success and three seasons have been released so far. In fact, I started to pay attention to this series mainly because its third season was released not too long ago and many people seemed to have enjoyed it.

The series is about Barry, a hitman who suddenly and by total chance, discovers the world of acting and for some reason gets in love with this profession. The fact that he, out of nowhere, developed a friendship with a pretty actress might have something to do with it.

The first season was about him discovering his love for acting, and somehow juggling his responsibilities between these 2 incompatible worlds, the murdering world of a hitman, and the creative and expressive world of an aspiring actor.

There were a lot of moments in season 1, where his life was at huge risk but he somehow maintained his cold-blood nature and never suffered an emotional breakdown or anything like that.

Most of the humor in the story is usually related to his hitman side and not to his acting side. The acting side is only there to generate complications and a bit of drama and maybe even add tension to the plot during moments whe he tries to hide everything about his violent nature and his killings.

Before deciding to study acting and becoming friends with other actors, Barry had a very boring life with zero excitement whatsoever. Apart from his hitman activities of course, but this is a job he doesn't even like. That's why, in part, he looks for something else that could make him feel alive.

There was a very tense moment at the ending of season 1 where Barry had to take a drastic decision in order to protect the life he has been building with his loved one, which is the actress that convinced him to be part of the acting world. And before the beginning of season 2, one of my expectations was to see the chaos and drama resulting from this drastic decision.

With the exception of this drastic decision, season 1 ends with Barry being very happy with his life because he is on the road to making his dreams come true. He goes from unhappy and frustrated at the beginning of the season, to happy and satisfied at the end of the season. I wondered if season 2 was going to result in the opposite change? From happy to unhappy? This was an interesting possibility in my opinion.

There were a lot of risks that could complicate Barry's life in due time, the criminal group he worked for in season 1 is still active despite some internal changes within it, and it is impossible to know if they will search for Barry and try to force them to come back and continue working for them.

I found it really improbably for Barry to simple left his previous life just like that without enduring life-threatening difficulties, and this is why my expectation about season 2 was to see his old life coming back to hit him in the ass even though he ended in good terms with those people despite many betrayals throughout the first season.

A big part of season 1 was dedicated to these criminal groups, there were 2 of them actually. The main one was an organized mafia from Chechnya, they are casually and effortlessly cruel towards anyone that might be an hindrance to them.

The other criminal group is some Bolivians who were introduced later in season 1 and have a strong presence in the US with strategic assets that make it easy for criminals to smuggle illegals items inside the country. This new season introduces a new criminal group that can cause some discord in the current friendly relationships between the Chechens and Bolivians.

In this new season Barry is more involved than ever before with the acting classes, he talks more with the rest of the aspiring actors and actresses and seems to feel completely comfortable with this environment. He even begins to share some traumatic personal info with his fellow acting students which means he has been developing confidence with these people and is now opening up about his internal issues.

However, there is something he can never discuss with them and it is obviously about his life as a hitman. Besides, I believe if he told them about it they would consider it some type of comedic monologue and not something serious, not to mention the moral obligation to call the police in case they took him slightly seriously.

The risk Barry is taking this season about getting discovered as a murderer is higher than ever before, he even has friends hanging out at his place which is full of hidden guns and dangerous things like that. It is unlikely for these things to be discovered but there is always the risk. I guess his main priority is to simply live as if his life was normal but that's obviously not the case.

My favorite character continues to be Gene Cousineau, played by Henry Winkler, he always managed to have this smooth performance which makes his character seems authentically hechon braggart. I mean, a person who requires his students to clap for him every time a new class begins isn't someone very humble. But I found him hilarious to watch.

I understand comedies aren't productions that should be taken entirely seriously, but what happened in episode 5 was the silliest thing I have watched in this series, and I really didn't see the point for this. The episode begins with a fight but the way it develops is absurdly ridiculous and I just didn't like it. It felt very anticlimactic and exaggerated.

As the season's advances, new betrayals will take place both in Barry's personal life as well as in the activities involving the criminal groups, activities that Barry has tried to distance himself of for quite a while and he is finally succeeding at this. Nevertheless, this doesn't mean Barry's life is finally peaceful and perfect because there are always some loose ends that can cause him enough trouble.

Final thoughts

Barry continued with its enjoyable style of dark comedy just like the first season, and the plot had a very natural and expected development without losing its identity. This season's ending leaves it very clear Barry will have to face the most significant threat to his new life in the third season, and this time, he might not be capable of keeping his secret life hidden anymore.

This series provides a type of comedy that isn't easily found, and personally, I love it a lot. Now that I think about it, this is probably the only series, along with The Boys which is a masterpiece by the way, that I have watched in recent times and belongs to the dark comedy genre. That makes it a very valuable production because it fills the demand for a very niche genre.
