Ever since I watched Harry Potter for the first time when I was a little kid I developed a liking for stories involving magic. In the past few years, I have watched many series on this genre such as The Magicians as well as A Discovery of Witches and even though I enjoyed those series for a while, they ended up boring me out.
Locke and Key, on the other hand, hasn't bored me out after 2 seasons. The way this series explores magic is very original and it is something I have never seen before. Plus, it has a great mystery properly embedded with the story that can make something very intriguing, and the amount of comedy it has doesn't kill the seriousness of the plot.
What was the series about?
The series is about Locke's siblings discovering that magic exists and it is channeled through magical keys that can be found around their ancestral home. They moved to that house after suffering a family tragedy, and even though they were very unhappy about having to move, when they discovered magic everything changed for them.
In this fictional world, there aren't magical wands, only keys, and the Locke family has been related to these keys for generations. The keys have all sorts of powers, one of them can change your face and general appearance, another one can make you travel to any door you can think of, so basically you use the key to open any door, and it will take you to the door you have in mind.
Another key gives you super strength, another one allows you to explore your mind in 3D, which was actually one of the coolest concepts introduced in the first season. The keys can do pretty much anything you can imagine, and most importantly, new keys can be created.
This is where the big mystery of the show comes into place. There is a mysterious black door inside a cave near a cost, and behind this magical door, another realm can be found. It isn't a friendly realm, but one full of potentially evil beings. The series hasn't explained much about this strange realm, but it has shown that without this realm magical keys wouldn't exist.
Ome of the evil beings from this realm is the villain in these 2 seasons. These beings understand the magical capabilities of the keys, they want to use them to gain more and more power for themselves, and probably take over the world at some point.
It is up to the Locke's siblings to do anything they can to prevent this from happening and stop the keys from being used for evil purposes. If you ask yourself why their mother isn't involved in this, it is because as an adult, she cannot remember magic unless one of the magical keys is used on her that can allow her to not forget everything about magic. When an adult sees magic, he/she forgets all about it after 5 seconds or so. This is why the Locke's siblings are the main characters.
During this season the villain got more powerful than ever before, but during a very important moment, it became clear its power wasn't really as much as it seemed.
Desde que vi Harry Potter por primera vez cuando era un niño, desarrollé un gusto por las historias que involucran magia. En los últimos años, he visto muchas series de este género como The Magicians así como A Discovery of Witches y aunque disfruté de esas series por un tiempo, terminaron aburriéndome.
Locke and Key, por otro lado, no me ha aburrido después de 2 temporadas. La forma en que esta serie explora la magia es muy original y es algo que nunca antes había visto. Además, tiene un gran misterio debidamente incrustado en la historia que puede hacer algo muy intrigante, y la cantidad de comedia que tiene no mata la seriedad de la trama.
¿De qué trataba la serie?
La serie trata sobre los hermanos Locke que descubren que la magia existe y se canaliza a través de llaves mágicas que se pueden encontrar en su hogar ancestral. Se mudaron a esa casa después de sufrir una tragedia familiar, y aunque estaban muy tristes por tener que mudarse, cuando descubrieron la magia todo cambió para ellos.
En este mundo ficticio no hay varitas mágicas, solo llaves, y la familia Locke ha estado relacionada con estas llaves durante generaciones. Las llaves tienen todo tipo de poderes, una de ellas puede cambiar tu rostro y apariencia general, otra puede hacerte viajar a cualquier puerta que se te ocurra, así que básicamente usas la llave para abrir cualquier puerta, y te llevará a la puerta que tienes en mente.
Otra llave te da súper fuerza, otra te permite explorar tu mente en 3D, que en realidad fue uno de los mejores conceptos introducidos en la primera temporada. Las llaves pueden hacer casi cualquier cosa que puedas imaginar y, lo que es más importante, se pueden crear nuevas llaves.
Aquí es donde entra en juego el gran misterio de la serie. Hay una puerta negra misteriosa dentro de una cueva cerca de una costa, y detrás de esta puerta mágica se puede encontrar otro reino. No es un reino amigable, sino uno lleno de seres potencialmente malvados. La serie no ha explicado mucho sobre este extraño reino, pero ha demostrado que sin este reino las llaves mágicas no existirían.
Uno de los seres malvados de este reino es el villano en estas 2 temporadas. Estos seres entienden las capacidades mágicas de las llaves, quieren usarlas para obtener más y más poder para sí mismos y probablemente dominar el mundo en algún momento.
Depende de los hermanos Locke hacer todo lo posible para evitar que esto suceda y evitar que las llaves se usen con fines malvados. Si te preguntas porque su madre no está involucrada en esto, es porque como adulta, no puede recordar la magia a menos que se use una de las llaves mágicas que le permiten no olvidar todo sobre la magia. Cuando un adulto ve magia, se olvida de ella después de 5 segundos más o menos. Es por eso que los hermanos Locke son los personajes principales.
Durante esta temporada, el villano se volvió más poderoso que nunca, pero durante un momento muy importante, quedó claro que su poder no era tanto como parecía.
All in all, the show is very enjoyable mainly due to the original magical concepts it introduces with the different keys, and also because of the unresolved mystery regarding the strange realm behind the hidden door in the cave.
Main names associated with the series
Mark Tonderai has been the main director of the series since the beginning. He is constantly participating in all types of series, and some recent examples are The Mysterious Benedict Society, Big Sky, and Castle Rock.
Mairzee Almas was one of the main directors of the second season and just like Tonderai, she also specializes in series. She has recently worked in Y: The Last Man, Shadow and Bone, and Batwoman.
The series has 3 main writers that have participated in the 2 seasons so far. Meredith Averill is one of them, she is a writer with enough experience working in shows, and she also participated in The Haunting of Hill House, Gone, and Pure Genius.
Aron Eli Coleite is another one of the main writers, since his career started in 2004 he has participated in 15 different productions so far. Some of his recent jobs were in Daybreak, Star Trek: Discovery, and The Proximity Effect.
Carlton Cuse is the remaining one of the main writers. He is the most experienced of them all and has participated in many well-known productions such as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, Colony, and Rampage.
In the cast, the main actors and actresses play members of the Locke family. Connor Jessup plays Tyler, the older one of the 3 siblings. This is a guy with good values and is very trustworthy. We can find this actor in American Crime, White Lie, and Strange But True.
Emilia Jones plays the middle sibling, Kinsey. She is very close in age to Tyler, and she is very mature for her age but she can also experience a bit of rebellion from time to time. This actress has recently participated in other productions such as CODA, Nuclear, and Incident in a Ghostland.

Anyone that watched season 1's ending will easily understand why this character, who was a secondary one in the first season, now became one of the main ones for this season. Some of the recent productions where this actor appears are Love Life, Dinner in America, and Tall Girl.
Aaron Ashmore plays Duncan, the sibling's cool uncle. He was also a secondary character in season 1, but it was clear he had the potential to become a very key character in the development of the story. In season 2, he surely becomes very key in solving the challenges the siblings have to face. We can find this actor in Killjoys, Regression, and Designated Survivor.
How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?
I have been happy with the performance of these actors since the first season. Something I criticized since the beginning is that there were some moments where important characters weren't cautious enough and this allowed the villain to gain some advantage. This didn't happen in the second season though, so that was cool.
The cast members playing teens, and even the kid actor did a very good job with their roles and it really felt like they were dealing with extremely dangerous stuff that could easily break havoc in the world.
The scenery is attractive mainly thanks to the huge house where the Locke family lives, and I really loved the creativity involved when it comes to designing the magical capability of each key. The magical background of this story is very extensive and I really love it, plus, it has some hidden darkness that can cause a lot of intrigue.
Final thoughts
Locke & Key has been a very enjoyable show so far. Something that causes me a bit of a worry is that even though the main danger is now resolved, the story somehow found a way to continue and already introduced a new villain.
Every time something like this happens I began to think if the show is starting to be overmilked because when that happens, it usually means the quality of the show will decrease rapidly. So far, it has been good though.
I would recommend this series for anyone in the mood to watch a story about magic. As mentioned before, this story has its original elements and the magical aspects of it are very rich. So much so, that it became my favorite series about magic with modern settings.

Cualquiera que haya visto el final de la temporada 1 entenderá fácilmente por qué este personaje, que era secundario en la primera temporada, ahora se convirtió en uno de los principales. Algunas de las producciones recientes donde aparece este actor son Love Life, Dinner in America y Tall Girl.

¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la escenografía y el trabajo de cámara?
He estado contento con la actuación de estos actores desde la primera temporada. Algo que critiqué desde el principio es que hubo algunos momentos en los que los personajes importantes no fueron lo suficientemente cautelosos y esto permitió que el villano ganara algo de ventaja. Sin embargo, esto no sucedió en la segunda temporada, así que fue genial.
Los miembros del elenco que interpretaban a adolescentes, e incluso el niño actor hicieron un muy buen trabajo con sus papeles y realmente se sentía como si estuvieran lidiando con cosas extremadamente peligrosas que fácilmente podrían causar estragos en el mundo.
La escenografia estuvo atractiva principalmente gracias a la enorme casa donde vive la familia Locke, y me encantó la creatividad involucrada a la hora de diseñar la capacidad mágica de cada llave. El trasfondo mágico de esta historia es muy extenso y realmente me encanta, además, tiene cierta oscuridad oculta que puede causar mucha intriga.
Reflexiones finales
Locke & Key ha sido un espectáculo muy agradable hasta ahora. Algo que me preocupa un poco es que a pesar de que el peligro principal ahora está resuelto, la historia de alguna manera encontró la manera de continuar y ya introdujo un nuevo villano.
Cada vez que sucede algo como esto, comencé a pensar si el programa está comenzando a ser sobre explotado porque cuando eso sucede, generalmente significa que la calidad del programa disminuirá rápidamente. Eso si hasta ahora todo ha estado bien.
Recomendaría esta serie a cualquiera que esté de humor para ver una historia sobre magia. Como se mencionó antes, esta historia tiene sus elementos originales y los aspectos mágicos de la misma son muy ricos. Tanto es así, que se convirtió en mi serie favorita sobre magia con ambientación moderna.

Esta si me la perdí por completo, no he visto ni la primera temporada. pero por las recomendaciones y criticas que he leído, la voy a colocar en mi lista de pendientes por ver. Aunque le huyo un poco a las series con protagonistas muy jóvenes, por ese motivo no he visto tampoco Stranger Things XD
Yo soy igual en ese sentido, también le rehuyo a las pelis o series con personajes muy jóvenes haha, pero esta serie me pareció que hace un buen trabajo con sus temas de fantasía y la verdad que me ha gustado bastante. Sobre Stranger Things, yo la comencé a ver hace años cuando salió pero dejé de verla hace tiempo y ni me acuerdo en qué había quedado.
Si te decides ver la de Locke and Key, te recomiendo tener expectativas más o menos moderadas porque tampoco es una obra maestra, pero sí tiene muchas cosas disfrutables en mi opinión.
