Mother's Day, Relaxation and the Joy of Doing Nothing at All!
It was Mother's Day today, here in the USA. Our son from Seattle did come over, but he left early this afternoon because his job in Parks & Rec requires him to show up at oh-dark-thirty tomorrow morning.
It was our first sunny and actually warm day of the year... and I am sure there were happy Mother's Day celebrations everywhere. At least I could smell the beginning of BBQ season drifting through the neighborhood!
I feel fairly "accomplished" because I actually managed to persuade Mrs. Denmarkguy to go out and sit in a comfortable garden chair and read a book — aka ”doing nothing” — for a few hours.
It is interesting how ”difficult” it can be to sit down and take a load off when you're used to being on the go all the time.
Mrs. Denmarkguy and I both really enjoyed the fine art of doing nothing at all, but it's a luxury we very rarely have. What's more, it's a luxury we're unlikely to ever have to any extent. ”Doing nothing” Is one of the things we have in common that we both really enjoy.
Of course, some people don't really like to not be busy at all times and they get very nervous and twitchy once they've sat still for about 3 minutes. We're pretty much the exact opposite of that.
As we were enjoying our afternoon coffee, we got on the topic of discussing retirement and with that the realization that there likely will be no such thing as ”retirement” in our lives.
We don't really have pension plans, and we're very unlikely to receive Social Security, so our main focus these days is to try to slowly build an interest bearing investment balance so at least we can have a modest stream of passive income as we get towards being too old to work as hard as we do now.
Do I feel angry and/or disappointed about not being able to enter a state of "doing nothing" in my golden years?
Well, not really. I've never been someone who's much into non-income producing "activities," so no loss there. Even if we did have ample funds, chances are I'd keep working with my hobbies and enjoy the challenge of generating income with them. It would be nice to feel less financial pressure, but "thems is the breaks," as the saying goes.
I have a lot of gratitude that our lives are already set up in such a way that what we do for a living are "light load" endeavors, and we work 100% from home.
Even gardening feels productive, in a sense, the process of growing food has meaning, too... and we probably save $2,000-$3,000 a year on food as a result of growing a lot of our own.
What was interesting in the middle of all this talk and panic surrounding inflation is the fact that seeds to grow your own food were not significantly more expensive this spring than in the past. So that's a good thing, and something to be grateful for!
Which reminds me: It's high time I got back on track with doing occasional "gardening updates" with my blog here!
