Walk of Nostalgia

It’s surprising that I’m not a fan of walks but I just up and decided to go for walk AT NIGHT. I honestly have been planning this walk for a long time but never actually executed my intention. I don’t know what got into me to finally make me do it last night.

Whatever it was, it happened last night and I set out on my night adventure. I live in Savelugu, a small town in the Northern Region of Ghana. I wouldn’t say my town was a very small town, but it’s not big enough to be called big.

This post is not going to feature a lot of nice interesting pictures like my daily blogs normally do, because I initially didn’t plan to share this walk so didn’t take any pictures worth sharing. It’ll mostly just be talk.

Picture was taken by me and text was added in canva

Okay so back to it….

As I set out, the destination for my walk was unknown to even me, because the plan was to simply walk around and get out of my room and my house for a while. I’m inside almost always these days and it was starting to get tiring and boring.

It seems my mind had other plans though as it’d already chose a destination without telling me. I unconsciously took the route I had been taking to school back in primary school and boy was I glad I came out! It’s been close to 9 years since I’ve gone around this area and the shocking thing is this area is soooo close to me. Like crazy close. I realized I don’t go around there anymore because my friends back from those days and I have grown apart and are no longer as close as we were when I used to roam that neighborhood.

My walk revealed a lot of changes in the neighborhood. Unfortunately though, because it’s a night walk I won’t be able to show you most of them, only tell you so bear with me. To enjoy the walk, I put my phone on flight mode (because my friends most likely would’ve called me up to plan something for the night) and took my AirPods to enjoy some music as I walked.

First thing I noticed was an extension in my old friend’s home. It’s been like 2 years since I last went around his house and he doesn’t live far from me either. I got embarrassed at how long it’s been since I last went to see him at his house when I saw the house had changed so much without me knowing. His dad added another block to what I used to know. I was really happy to see it.

A few minutes after I walked past my friend’s house, I noticed another weird thing. When we were kids back at primary school, we used to play football in a football field in that area. I haven’t been there in I think 10 years! So apparently it was no longer a football field as some family bought the land and built a house on top the field. The house wasn’t on the entire field so the remaining portions of it was covered in grass. It was disappointing to see our old playground no longer alive. Walking past it, I got flashes of some matches we played there back in the day.

Literally a minute walk from our old field stood a new primary school. This was another thing I was very happy to see. I was moving farther and farther away from my own neighborhood with every step at this point. You see, back when I used to take this route to school, there was a VERY old primary school in this location, one a lot of people shunned not just because of how old it looked, but because they believed the quality of education there was poor. You would side with them if you saw it trust me. So right next to it, was standing this new primary school, you could tell it was VERY new because you could smell the paint fresh off the building. I was a little shocked when I could smell paint but not see it, but that was because I approached it from the side in darkness. Then as I walked around to the part facing light, I saw the paint. I didn’t have plans of sharing this walk at that point so I didn’t take any pictures there. I honestly don’t even remember the paint color, but it was nice.

Now to my final destination. I walked a long time before I finally got where I was going because my final destination was actually far. But after like 15 minutes of walking(and staring), I got to Future Scholars Academy Complex(Don’t bother searching on google cos you won’t find a picture of the school for a visual😅) my primary school.I lit up with a smile when I stood in front of it. The place I received my basic education. I was disappointed not much had changed about it, but not too much because I know the kind of person our proprietress is. I guess I was just hoping the years had changed her, but it didn’t. This is where you get a picture because this was an important part of the walk for me and I had to take this picture.

Unfortunately for me, it was locked when I got there(weird I wasn’t expecting it to be locked) so I only stood outside and managed this shot of the gate and a little but of the inside. Like I said, I wasn’t really planning on sharing so I didn’t take the picture in a way I can describe details from. Maybe if I ever make a daytime version of this walk, I’ll show you a recap of everything I described here.

Anyways, I circled the school several times noticing everything that changed over the years, and I’m disappointed it wasn’t much. It was just an improved washroom they got, and a fancier playground. A very short fence too. I’m pretty sure the people in the area thought I came to steal something when they saw how long I stood there and how many times I later circled the school.

From there, I passed by one of my old friends from those days’ house and said hello. Then headed back home. Or did I?

Near my house, there’s a senior high school called Savelugu Senior High School(You’ll find this one on google maps lol) that I took a little detour to check out.I figured since I’m already out, it’d be a waste to not go inside there since it’s like a 2 minutes walk from my house. Now imagine, a place that is two minutes walk from my house and I haven’t been there in almost 2 years too. I took this opportunity to go explore the changes inside there a bit too.

I didn’t even do any exploring when I got inside the school. I just climbed on top the first floor of their highest building, and just stood there watching the sky and listening to some music. Took a few shots as I stood though. Nothing spectacular, just what my camera could see.

This is of the moon, and is the original of the picture I edited for my thumbnail. We had a crescent here last night and I tried to capture it. Obviously my camera wasn’t seeing what my eye did. The picture quality is poor here because I zoomed in my highest(10x) for this shot. The first time I’ve used my phone’s 10x magnifying power. Why I’m still sharing it is because despite the fact that it wasn’t all that nice or clear, it looked like a painting in an odd way and I like it. That was the crescent right above the neem leaves in the picture.

In this other one, I captured students sitting at the far end of the floor, and believe me when I tell you, it was a lot darker than what you see. The picture blew my mind. Night mode does work magic after all. I watched the place light up on my phone’s screen the moment I hit capture.

I stood there watching the high school students go about their night and it brought some flashes of me in high school back. Both happy and sad memories. I noticed though that the current generation of people in high school here were a bit younger than what we looked like in high school back then.

I was getting tired of the outside after a while and headed back home for real this time lol.

It’s shocking how much change you’ll notice in the environment around you that you’ve been ignoring for a while if you just pause and take a look around, and that is exactly what I did last night. I think you should too if you have the time. It’s a phenomenal and nostalgic experience. And if you do decide to walk down this path of nostalgia, do something you used to do back in the day. Makes the experience twice as fun.

Looks like I’m not the only one that just starts walking around the neighborhood without any specific destination😂. Just recently I rode around my former school and I was surprised 😯 on how the environment had changed, the roads, buildings and almost everything was different. I was like in the 5 years time i would find it hard to recognize the place again.

Yeahh. You would’ve enjoyed it even more if you walked. If you’re close to the school anyways. Tamale is a very fast changing city and I’m sure the place would’ve changed even more than you imagined in 5 years time.

So, you'll just decide to be walking up and down at night? I loveeeettt.

Anyway, now your write-up makes me want to visit my old school. I wonder what it looks like now. I also just realized that I've lived in this estate for over 3 years, but I've never walked to the end of the estate, I really should.
PS: I enjoyed reading this, it was almost like we took that walk together.

I’m glad you enjoyed the walk. You definitely should try it sometime. 3 years is a long time and you’ll be amazed the changes you notice in your surroundings which have always escaped your attention.

Let me know if you try it. Maybe a tag or mention:)

I thought I was missing home a bit but this post just made it worse. I’m not even sure if I can’t find the path I use to take to school. I might not be able to remember.
Life really flashes in seconds. Just trying to think of those times has me feeling weird
