Making Myself an Embroidery Sampler

Hello, friends especially needleworkers!

It’s been a long time for me not making any hand embroideries, this piece of mine made years ago..

20220110_130706.jpg

I still use my hand embroidered fabric book cover at work . I made this nautical pattern with colorful embroidery floss. Recenty I also decided to make myself an embroidery sampler before I start my embroidery work this time (cause needles and floss always make me happy) and also here I would like to share my experience, extra tips, and also step by step how I made the stitches… And why don’t we just start it now?

All I need this time was just my embroidery needle, floss, fabrics and also embroidery hoop.

I started my experience this time by making

WOVEN WHEEL STITCH

First I drew the lines which looked like a star then I put the embroidery hoop around then I started to stitch. Started with outer part to the center point, I stitched the 5 sides of the star then put my needle through a bit upper right of the center point, then the needle with floss through then I started the upper and through floss passing the five sides of my first stitches…

I did over and over, and then..

The result was unwell, the floss was dumped, curly and not neat.. My tip: pay attention to the floss we used, I used 6 strains of the floss by separating them then joined them in a knot, but I thought this made the strains didn’t hold each other, so it became loose and unwell.

So I tried it again.. I used the same embroidery hoop but I used the 6 strains of floss without separating them 3 by 3, and it was worked. But I wasn’t satisfy because the result was a bit not tight so it didn’t perfectly neat.

Then I also paid attention that my embroidery hook was unwell, it didn’t hold the fabric tight. So I decided to change my hoop, this time I used my plastic hoop which usually hold any fabrics tighter. I did it with the same way as I made my first and second attempt, then yes, it worked really well!

OK so my tip if you want to make your own embroidery sampler or, make the woven wheel stitch, would be pay attention on the floss texture and structure plus the embroidery hoop tightness.

LAZY DAISY STITCH

The basic way to make this stitch was just simple water drop. So I passed my needle with the floss through from back of the fabric then through the back from the same point, to make a loop. Then until I got the height of the water drop, I passed the needle again from the back then hold the loop with my floss like below then stitch it to the back and it’s finished.

Then I did the same thing again for five times, from the center point, until I got 5 water drops..

And voila, the flower finished. This stitch was simpler than the woven wheel I made before.

BULLION KNOT

To make the bullion knot I started also from the back, passed the needle through the front then through the back again but not at the same point I started before.. After back, I didn’t pull all the thread behind, but I left a quite long loop on the top, I then made my needle back to the first point I started this stitch, then wrapped the thread to my needle, then pull them carefully then I continued to the second point to the back and the bullion knot is finished.

The other simpler stitches I made in my sampler are

RUNNING STITCH

BACK STITCH

20220110_095912.jpg

It was the same as the simple running stitch but the different is after the first stitch I need to go back then on the front, we did the stitch that back to the first stitch line we make, I think this is why it is called the back stitch. Quite simple, and you could copy how I made it from the pictures below.

SPLIT STITCH

20220110_100001.jpg

It kind of similar with the back stitch but the different would be we back to half of the previous stitch we made and also the stitch we made would split the previous one we made.

FRENCH KNOT

20220110_100029.jpg

The knot would be much simpler than the bullion knot, I did it by passing the needle through my fabric from the back, then passed it back after I wrapped the thread on my needle.

STEM STITCH

20220110_100112.jpg

For this stitch I would make my stitch a bit longer than it usually is, then how to make it was just like the split stitch but it wouldn’t make any stitches splitted.

CHAIN STITCH

20220110_100557.jpg

Like the name it would be like a chain, I started by passing my needle with thread through the fabric from the back to the front, then went back to the same hole to make a loop, after that I passed from the back to the front part on another point, make sure my needle came to the loop I made before then I went back to the same point, then repeat the process. You would see it more clearly here.

It was difficult for me cause my thread was a bit tricky and also this was my first time made this stitch so I couldn’t make the same size of each chain (sorry for that).

STRAIGHT STITCH

I only made through a hole then to the other on the right of it, just a long stitch one.

FISH BONE STITCH

20220110_191224.jpg

I thought it was difficult to make fish bone but it was easy, first I drew the leaf then I stitch from the top part of leave to a spot (in my mind) below it, then to the right top part then stitch below, then to the left top part to the spot below, then right top to the center below, left top to the center below, repeat. And it is finished.

Some of the stitches haven't finished but don't worry cause i will continue this article soon, thanks for reading my article, hope you enjoy it and stay tune!

Wow! How super this compilation, I loved the summary you made of the stitches, it's a way to always keep them in mind.

I really liked the BULLION KNOT stitch, it looks easy to do with your explanation, I will take it into account for when I knit next time.

Thank you for such detailed content.

I love embroidery. It's been a while since I stopped doing it. I am excited about getting my sampler out.

The drum or frame I have is wood and the truth is that it doesn't fit me with much pressure on the fabric. I'll look for those plastic ones and see if I have any luck.

Some of the embroidery stitches you show are familiar to me, I have tried a few. I take advantage of the six strands of the skein by using it in two or three strands, but the stitch looks beautiful using all six strands.

Thank you for sharing your experience. You have a nice embroidery sample. Soon we will see more of your creations. Greetings from Venezuela. I'm Lelys 🙋

Yo soy Lelys 🙋

When I was a kid, I remembered playing with my mom's embroidery hoop. She used to scold me for doing that until she taught me basic embroidery. I loved it so much there was a time my pillow cases had a lot of embroidered designs. Haha.

This reminded me of all the embroidery designs my mom taught me. Maybe I'll try to make one sometime too!
