Without You

They say one love is blind. I would say the story of Ethan and Kira is the perfect definition of that. They met at a support group for the visually impaired, and from that very first moment they sat next to each other they felt the spark. One might have called it living in fairytale land but from that moment they knew they were meant to be. Their relationship started, they bonded over their shared experiences and struggles, soon fell deeply in love.

Despite the obstacles that came with their blindness, Ethan and Kira were incredibly happy together. It became easier, having someone that understood. They navigated the world with the help of canes and guide dogs, and found ways to enjoy life to the fullest. Long walks in the park, listening to the birds singing and the wind rustling through the trees, all the little things in the world that gave them both satisfaction. They would cook meals together, using their sense of smell and taste to create delicious dishes. And they would sit and talk for hours on end, their bond growing stronger with each passing day.
Over the years, their love grew stronger. By now they had both moved in together. Everything was in life was right, not perfect but as good as it could be.

Ethan came home one day with an unexpected news. He had been offered an experimental treatment that had the potential to restore his vision. He did not know how to feel about it. Often he imagined what it would be like to see the world how everyone else saw it but he was hesitant.
"What if he got his hopes up and it didn't work?, What if he it worked and he didn't like how the world looked?".
"I can hear you thinking you know?". He turned to her, he could feel her smiling, "I'm worried Kee, what if?-"
"You can't live your life through what ifs, no matter what happens its me and you and if this treatment gives you back your sight, it will be a miracle for both of us."

Ethan agreed to the treatment, and to everyone's surprise, it worked. He could see again after years of being blind. He was overjoyed, but also overwhelmed by the new experiences and emotions that came with his newfound sight. He was amazed by the beauty of the world, and all the colors and details that he had never been able to see before.
Then came a strain in their almost perfect life, as he adjusted to his new life he began to realize that his relationship with Kira was changing. He found himself becoming more and more distant from her, and he didn't know why. He tried to ignore the feeling, but it only grew stronger.

Eventually, Ethan couldn't take it anymore and sat down with Kira and broke the news to her that he needed some time to be alone and figure things out. He explained to her that he was grateful for the love they shared and all the years they spent together, but that he needed to explore this new world and see what it had to offer.

Kira was heartbroken. She couldn't understand why Ethan would leave her after all they had been through together. But she knew that she couldn't hold him back, and that he had to follow his heart.

They said their goodbyes, and Ethan set out into the world, eager to see all that it had to offer. No matter where he went, the things he saw, he still felt the nagging feeling of emptiness. "Kira" that's what he was missing. He had been so dumb and naive. He realized that he had taken her for granted, and that he had never truly appreciated all that she had done for him.

Ethan eventually found his way back to her. True love is not about what you can see, but about what is in your heart. Kira felt him as soon as he opened the door.
"You did not have the locks changed".
"I had no reason to".
The room went silent after that. "How was the world?"
"Kee I'm so sorry, I messed up big time. I thought I needed to leave to find what I'm looking for but it has always been here. I could see it when I was blind but with my vision restored I lost sight of it. How ironic right?. I promise you if you give me a chance-".
"Ethan?"
"What?"
"You talk too much". She got up and threw her hands around him.
"Ouch, what was that for?"
"If you leave me again, your vision won't be the only thing you have to worry about".
"I know and I'm sorry. I love you"
"I love me too"
He turned to look at her. She was so beautiful, "I said I was sorry"
"Fine. I love you too".

From that day on, Jack and Jane lived happily ever after, their love for each other as strong as ever. They knew that they had been through the toughest of times and through it all they stuck together, and that nothing would ever be able to tear them apart.

I do wish she got her eyesight fixed too so she could explore the world herself.
Your story tells of how strong a bond can be despite time and distance.

I knew he would see things differently immediately he regains his and it happened. But it's good that he realised that the heart bond is what matters most in relationship and not what you can with the eyes

You write a very sentimental story, @dianelson. You make us experience a number of feelings. We understand love without the vision as a deep form of understanding that is not mediated by each lover's specific gaze, but by another way of understanding the world. We understand Jack's desire as a seer and we suffer Jane's loneliness without realizing that she knows Jack more deeply than we readers do. Thank you for the beautiful story. and for your presence in the comments on the other stories.
