Cap Malhereux and the little church with a red roof (Mauritius)

In just two weeks I will be going on a holiday to Mauritius. I am already looking forward to see this place again. Cap Malhereux is one of my favourite places when I visit Mauritius. It's located on the northern tip of the island. I always stay in Grand Bay which is located only a short drive from Cap Malheureux. That’s why we often take the car and drive up here to watch the sun set. This bay is a beautiful sunset spot. It’s popular among locals, but also tourists. There are allways many locals here. The children are playing in the water and many have there small wooden fishing boats here as well. The island you see in the background is Coin de Mire. If you choose to take a day tour by catemaran from Grand Baie, you will pass it.

Sometime during the period between 1710 and 1810 the island belonged to the French. Then the British took over. The British gathered armed forces from some of their colonies and then they made a surprise attack on the French here at Cap Malhereux. They defeated the French when they landed here. The village and this northern tip of the island came to be called Cap Malheueux, or «unlucky Cape» some years later. I don't know if it's because the French were unlucky, or the coast is rough. It might be the first. The French never got the island back. It was lost for good.

Cap Malheureux is known for this little church with the red roof, called Notre Dame Auxiliatrice. It just might be the most famous of all churches on the island. When it comes to weddings, it is popular. One of my nieces actually got married here in 2011. Bridal couples often come here to take wedding photos. The church is usually open during the day, so it's possible to have a look inside. There are some quite good beaches too. Like Bain Boeuf public beach, which invites to a swim. A pleasant place indeed.
