Moments and Emotions of Street Photography [ENG/ESP]

Now that I have a different vision about street photography, I focus much more on capturing moments, emotions and expressions in people while I am walking. Today I prepared a mix of this type of photography in which I combine color and black and white photos, as some should be expressed in an achromatic way because they tend to have a greater impact on the viewer.

"The delivery" of PedidosYa... captured while going up one of the sloping streets in the neighborhood of San Nicolas near the courthouse area and crossing Lavalle square. It's a photo I like because there is action, while you can see details in the background such as the "City Police" sign, part of a building under renovation and passersby walking in the opposite direction.

Ahora que tengo una visión diferente sobre la fotografía de calle, me enfoco mucho más en capturar momentos, emociones y expresiones en las personas mientras hago mis caminatas. Hoy preparé un mix de este tipo de fotografías en la cual combino fotos en color y en blanco y negro, pues algunas deben expresarse de forma acromática porque suelen tener un impacto mayor al espectador.

"El delivery" de PedidosYa... capturado mientras subía una de las calles inclinadas en el barrio de San Nicolás cerca de la zona de los tribunales y cruzando la plaza Lavalle. Es una foto que me gusta porque hay una acción, mientras se pueden observar detalles en el fondo como el cartel de "Policía de la Ciudad", parte de un edificio en remodelación y transeúntes caminando en el sentido contrario.

This time I will develop photo by photo to make it more dynamic and descriptive. I was standing near Plaza de Mayo, also near the neighborhood of San Telmo and I noticed a sign with an arrow pointing to the right, while there was a mini crosswalk screen pointing in the opposite direction for people crossing....

Well, it must be a good idea to capture someone walking in the same direction indicated by the arrow on the right and that in the composition between the mini screen (I said to myself) so I waited a bit and that moment came, not only a person walking but this one had an additional action... talking on the phone!

En esta ocasión voy a desarrollar foto por foto para hacerlo más dinámico y descriptivo. Estaba parado cerca de la plaza de mayo, también cerca del barrio de San Telmo y me di cuenta de un cartel con una flecha que señalaba hacia la derecha, mientras que había una mini pantalla de cruce peatonal que señalaba en el sentido contrario para el cruce de personas...

Bueno, debe ser una buena idea capturar a alguien caminando en la misma dirección que indica la flecha de la derecha y que en la composición entre la mini pantalla (me dije a mi mismo) así que esperé un poco y ese momento llegó, no solo una persona camina do sino que ésta tenía una acción adicional... hablar por teléfono!

The contact between people in the streets, the communication and the sharing of ideas and thoughts about any subject is interesting to portray, this time with a much closer approach I took a picture while three people were chatting, two of them are with their backs turned while another one is facing me. I love their expression as you can see some emotion in it and obviously this photo had to be in black and white to give it more drama.

El contacto entre personas en las calles, la comunicación y ese compartir de ideas y pensamientos sobre cualquier tema es interesante de retratar, ésta vez con mucho más acercamiento tomé una foto mientras tres personas charlaban, dos de ellas se encuentran de espaldas mientras que otra está de frente. Me encanta su expresión ya que se puede notar alguna emoción en ella y obviamente está foto tenía que ser en blanco y negro para proporcionarle más dramatismo.

Near this place is the Bolivar station that belongs to the E line of the Buenos Aires subway. You could say that a tourist or a person who does not know the city a little bit is standing right in front of the sign that indicates all the subway stations. Well, there he is, looking where he has to go, where he has to get off and which train he has to take.

Cerca de este lugar se encuentra la estación Bolivar que pertenece a la línea E del subterráneo de Buenos Aires. Podría decir que un turista o una persona que desconoce un poco la ciudad se encuentra parado justo frente al cartel que indica todas las estaciones del subterráneo. Pues allí está, observando hacia donde tiene que ir, dónde tiene que bajar y cuál tren debe tomar.

Ok, let's do a little test, a photographic exercise... that's what I set out to do. Waiting for many people together to decide to cross one of the streets while directing the focus point only to one of them, the girl who is looking to her left while... smiling? Maybe.

This is interesting because during editing I decided to darken her surroundings including the people near her and add a little more lighting to her, in order to bring out her figure and expression more. It was very daytime and there were no shadows as a supporting point.

Ok, hagamos una pequeña prueba, un ejercicio fotográfico... fué lo que me propuse. Esperar que muchas personas juntas decidan cruzar una de las calles mientras dirigía el punto de enfoque solo a una de ellas, la chica que está mirando hacia su izquierda mientras... sonríe? Puede ser.

Esto es interesante porque durante la edición decidí oscurecer si entorno incluyendo las personas que están cerca de ella y añadirle un poco más de iluminación a ella, con el objetivo de resaltar más su figura y expresión. Era muy de día y no habían sombras como punto de apoyo.

"Pertutti..." I took at least about three photos of this same scene and one of them I shared a few days ago in black and white. I think it was quite well received and I even received comments with the appreciation of having an old movie atmosphere. Well, here I show you the same scene but seconds later, other actions, another photo, this time in color 🙂

"Pertutti"... Hice al menos unas tres fotos de esta misma escena y una de ellas la compartí hace algunos días en blanco y negro. Creo que tuvo bastante aceptación e incluso recibí comentarios con la apreciación de tener una atmósfera de película antigua. Bueno acá les muestro la misma escena pero segundos después, otras acciones, otra foto, ésta vez en color 🙂

Remember the lady who was talking on the phone while walking in the same direction as the sign with the arrow? That's her, now she decided she wasn't going in the right direction and ran in the opposite direction. Portraying people running or jogging is also attractive, we just need to have a fairly high shutter speed to be able to freeze the movement, I would say from 1/800, although this photo has 1/4000 😃

¿Recuerdan la señora que hablaba por teléfono mientras caminaba hacia la misma dirección del cartel con la flecha? Es ella, ahora decidió que no iba en la dirección correcta y corrió hacia la dirección contraria. Retratar a las personas corriendo o trotando también es atractivo, solo debemos tener una velocidad de obturación bastante alta para poder congelar el movimiento, yo diría que a partir de 1/800, aunque ésta foto tiene 1/4000 😃

Here a waiter at the Pertutti restaurant is serving one of his customers. Although I should have moved the camera a little to the right to better incorporate the person who is sitting, I think you can appreciate it well, there is an action, a moment and I thought it was interesting to share it.

Acá un camarero del restaurante Pertutti se encuentra atendiendo a uno de sus clientes. Aunque debí haber movido un poco la cámara hacia la derecha para incorporar mejor a la persona que está sentada, creo que se puede apreciar bien, hay una acción, un momento y me pareció interesante compartirla.

I am 90% sure that this person is a chauffeur or a manager of a transport company, it seems to me that he was waiting for someone while standing near the van which obviously looks like a private transport, moreover.

Estoy en un 90% seguro de que ésta persona es un chófer o un encargado de una empresa de transporte, me parece que estaba esperando a alguien mientras estaba parado cerca de la camioneta que obviamente tiene apariencia de ser un transporte privado, además.

I love it! There's nothing boring about these photos, you have captured some interesting moments of life and the explanation/reasoning makes it more interesting. I think you're becoming a real paparazzo 😁

You captured a lot of detail my friend, that's what I like about street photography, although personally I like to take pictures without any presence of a person to focus more on the environment, the possible geometry or visible structure.

Those black and white photographs, besides giving more drama, also allow the lines of expression of the person to be clearer and more highlighted.

Photography is an extensive world that covers many aspects. Photography in structures and spaces without people is great too, I spent a long time photographing the emblematic city buildings and I do it from time to time.
