Some Portraits in a Power Metal Band Rehearsal | Monomad Challenge [ENG/ESP]

This is something cool and different. I don't know if you know but apart from photography I am passionate about music, Rock and Metal especially. Many years ago I had a band and traveled around my country (Venezuela) doing concerts and in the middle of all this artistic field. After arriving in Argentina this stopped due to work issues and I resumed the artistic theme but in photography.

When I started in this I didn't think about concert photography, I focused on street photography, which is what I am most passionate about. Last week a friend of mine contacted me to invite me to one of her Power Metal band's rehearsals, I agreed to go and I also brought my camera to take some pictures of them.

I notified her that I would do that and they jumped at the idea.

Esto es algo genial y diferente. No sé si ustedes saben pero aparte de la fotografía me apasiona la música, el Rock y el Metal especialmente. Hace muchos años tenía una banda y viajaba por todo mi país (Venezuela) haciendo conciertos y en medio de todo este ámbito artístico. Luego de llegar a Argentina esto se detuvo por asuntos laborales y retomé el tema artístico pero en la fotografía.

Cuando empecé en esto no pensaba en fotografía de conciertos me enfocaba en fotografía de calle que es lo que más me apasiona. La semana pasada una amiga me contactó para invitarme a uno de sus ensayos de su banda de Power Metal, accedí a ir y también llevé mi cámara para tomarles algunas fotos.

Le notifiqué que haría eso y ellos se animaron con la idea.

When I arrived at the place I was surprised because all the members of the band are Venezuelan, which generated some extra time of trust and brotherhood because apart from going to take pictures of them we coincided in the musical taste. It was a moment to share with fellow musicians and at the same time try to take some pictures.

However, not everything was perfect. The rehearsal room they had rented was exaggeratedly small and I brought my 50 mm lens, in addition to this the lighting was very poor and the few points of light were immovable.

Cuando llegué al lugar sorprendí porque todos los integrantes de la banda son venezolanos, lo que generó cierto tiempo de confianza extra y hermandad ya que aparte de ir a tomarles fotos coincidimos en el gusto musical. Fué un momento de compartir entre compañeros de música y al mismo tiempo probar hacer algunas fotos.

Sin embargo no todo fué perfecto. La sala de ensayo que habían rentado era exageradamente pequeña y yo llevé mi lente 50 mm, adicional a esto la iluminación era muy pobre y los pocos puntos de luz eran inamovibles.

It wasn't a job or any responsibility to them, nor were there any payment arrangements for the photos, we went to have fun so I didn't worry too much about that either. However the fact that the light was poor did cause some discomfort when taking the pictures. It is not pleasant for a photographer to have to take pictures in unfavorable conditions.

No era un trabajo o había alguna responsabilidad con ellos, tampoco acuerdos de pago por las fotos, fuimos a divertirnos por lo que tampoco me preocupe demasiado acerca de esto. Sin embargo el hecho de que la luz fuera pobre si generó cierta disconformidad al momento de tomar las fotos. No es agradable para un fotógrafo tener que hacer fotos con condiciones desfavorables.

Still we all moved some equipment around and improvised a bit to get good results for some of the photos. After that I focused on enjoying the rehearsal while randomly shooting with the camera.

The sound quality of the studio was amazing as well as the group and individual musicianship of the members. It had been a long time since I had been to a rehearsal and I was very pleased to see how they were all in harmony and knew what they were doing.

Aún así entre todos movimos algunos equipos e improvisados un poco para lograr que los resultados sean buenos para algunas de las fotos. Después de esto me enfoqué a disfrutar del ensayo mientras aleatoriamente disparaba con la cámara.

La calidad de sonido del estudio era asombrosa así como también la calidad musical grupal e individual de los integrantes. Hace mucho tiempo que no iba a un ensayo y me agrado muchísimo apreciar como estaban todos en armonía y sabían lo que estaban haciendo.

While they were rehearsing we ordered some beers and shared anecdotes of our experiences in Venezuela and how it had been to emigrate to this country, all related to the musical field in this genre.

Mientras ensayaban ordenamos algunas cervezas y compartíamos anécdotas de nuestras vivencias en Venezuela y de como había sido el emigrar hacia este país, todo relacionado con el ámbito musical en este género.

I must say that the fact of witnessing these rehearsals or attending a concert generates a certain nostalgia in me and at the same time the desire to resume music, practice again with the guitar and start composing songs, it has always been something that generates happiness in me, so.... Why not take it up again?

Debo decir que el hecho de presenciar estos ensayos o asistir a algún concierto me genera cierta nostalgia y a su vez ganas de retomar la música, practicar de nuevo con la guitarra y empezar a componer canciones, siempre ha sido algo que genera felicidad en mi, así que... ¿Por qué no retomarlo?

As an additional topic and in relation to photography I must confess that I discovered a certain affinity to take this kind of photos, and some time ago I had thought about doing it but in concerts, with lighting that characterizes these places, colored lights and smoke. That would be great!

Cómo tema adicional y en relación a la fotografía debo confesar que descubrí cierta afinidad para hacer este tipo de fotos, ya hace gun tiempo había pensado en hacerlo pero en conciertos, con iluminación que caracteriza a estos lugares, luces de colores y humo. Eso sería genial!

The expressions on their faces is something I also liked, especially with the vocalist, who due to the musical style had to make very high notes and in one of her photos you can see this, a feeling or emotion that I could capture at the exact moment.

Las expresiones en la cara de ellos es algo que también me gustó, sobretodo con la vocalista, quien debido al estilo musical debía hacer notas muy altas y en una de sus fotos se puede observar esto, un sentimiento o emoción que pude capturar en el momento exacto.

Well, this is a different post with different pictures and that's a very good thing. Varying the content a bit and immersing ourselves in different styles makes us more complete in what we do. At the end of the rehearsal we talked and agreed to do more photos but next time it will be in a bigger studio and with better lighting. We all want better photos 😄

Bueno, esto es un post diferente con fotografías diferentes y eso es algo muy bueno. Variar un poco el contenido y sumergirse en estilos diferentes nos hace más completos en lo que hacemos. Al final del ensayo conversamos y acordamos hacer más fotos pero la próxima vez será en un estudio
mas grande y con mejor iluminación. Todos queremos mejores fotos 😄
