Charactober — Acorn Gatherer | Nivukti Worldbuilding

Another little woodland character is joining my Nivukti universe. I am happy there is charactober to make it easier for me to add characters in my worldbuilding personal project. I designed an Acorn Gatherer, basing it on the design brief. This is another member of the Thummok kin or the weasel like animals.

In Nivukti, the kli is a mast-bearing hardwood tree that produces acorn-like nuts, I call them the kolo. Gathering these nuts is a major task by the said kin. The sound nuts can be sorted and stored for the colder months, when food gathered in autumn becomes especially valuable and some could be used as decorations.

I imagine this character working quietly beneath the kli trees, using a small picking tool to tease nuts out from between fallen leaves and roots, then carrying the day's collection in a big woven basket like a backpack. The Thummok reputation for patience, precision, and recovering what others overlook feels particularly fitting for this kind of work.

A few related words from Nivukti:

  • Kli — a mast-bearing hardwood tree with acorn-like nuts
  • Kolo — nut
  • Syrmaa — to pick, pluck, or glean
  • Syrmatu — gleaner
  • Syrmaki — a small picking tool or berry pin
  • Klyndu — a hot, aromatic roasted-nut drink made from acorns
  • Hynari — a winter hearth-gathering where Klyndu is shared
  • Hyntra — winter or the cold season

I especially like the connection between autumn gathering and the warmth of winter gatherings. A small basket of nuts can connect an everyday woodland task to a much larger part of the culture

I still couldn'think of a name for acorn gathering and this new character is still unnamed. Syrmatu is a strong starting point, though a more specific word for a kli-nut gatherer may eventually emerge. Wish me luck

One character, one ordinary task, and another small piece of Nivukti life taking shape.

This is how this acorn gatherer looks like when I drafted the first sketch. I'm quite happy with a small basket of acorns then randomly used pink for the color. I love the scarf very fluffy and the color is lovely and to give it some punch I added these blue triangular tips

I know this lacks some of the details mentioned in the design cue. So I added at least four new details like the hat, an apron, a woven basket for carrying acorns and bows to decorate the boots. It is now having more interesting design details I didn't want a boring squirrel like character with acorn. At first the hat is quite challenging for me to design didn't know if I make a tall top hat, maybe a bucket hat or a pointy cap. My instincts...simple and small cap so it won't compete for attention. The most fun part is designing the backpack with these criss cross lines and punctuating them with red I love the effect.

Here I added a background I copied the background color of my leaf sorter character to make them cohesive then started adding oak trees, some dried leaves and shadows. I think the pink basket needs some texture so I outlined it with blue.

It was fun working with the small dark cap I was thinking it needs some accents to give it depths. The last final touch I made is the highlights. Just a little shimmer of light on the character's silhouette so it pops up. Overall it was a fun experience and I love the result. Thanks for reading and supporting.
