NeedleWorkMonday: Some Pieces Of Priceless Heirloom From Generation To Generation And My Own Needlework

(Edited)

Good day everyone! This is my first time joining and writing on this amazing community. Thanks to @jurich60 for her never-ending encouragement to join the team and to @sarimanok as second the motion.

The importance of family traditions and heirlooms has been passed down from generation to generation since the dawn of time.

I grew up in a home where many designs of needlework once belonged to my great-grandmother passed on to my mom's grandmother, to my mom's mother, to my mother, and to me. I am happy to have such lovely needleworks in our home, and as I grew older, I came to appreciate their value and the importance of safeguarding pieces that once belonged to the matriarch of our family. Little did I know that my family was not unique and that needlework is commonly passed down in families and cherished for generations.

The other day, I was cleaning the cabinet I saw crocheted curtains, bedspreads, table runners, turn-table runners, doilies, valance, and more. Everything is in the box neatly folded and were wrapped in plain white cloth because, during the storm Milenio, the other things we used were wet and damaged. It surprised me that the quality of the crochet was so good and still lovely, it showed how durable the needleworks have been after so many years. It was amazing how the needleworks were precisely designed with different pattern schemes and different variations. I took out some of her needleworks from the cloth and snapped photos of some of it.

I lost sight of crochet temporarily when I was working because I was always tired when I came home from work especially when I gave birth to my youngest who had a disability. My time is focused on him as I can not leave him to others especially to my elderly mother. She can't take care of him when my child has tantrums. With the pandemic, I am always at home somehow, I have time to crochet (of course with my son by my side). Today, I have decided to go back to what I have loved...CROCHET and maybe TATTING (but I have to improvise a SHUTTLE for tatting, because I cannot find a shop here in my place that sells shuttle) which I also enjoyed doing when I was in grade school.

I would like to share with you the needlework of my mother:

  • She uses Steel Crochet Hooks (nos. 6, 7, and 8) and she never uses other colors than the WHITE thread. She said it's neat!

I also have my own needlework, a simple rose design glass coaster. I made ten (10) pieces. I even started a beret but haven't finished it yet because the store where I bought the thread has run out of stock and due to the pandemic their orders were delayed. I started crocheting last month and decided to focus on it. Here's a sample of my own needlework. Tada...

I am glad that you like it. I used to sit beside my grandmother when she is doing her crochet and she noticed that I am interested in what she is doing. She taught me how to crochet and I had my first needlework when I was in grade school, a beautiful doilies, a school project.

This is really amazing after all those years the needlework remains intact.

I am so glad that you like what I have shared with the community. Thank you too for the warm welcome. That needlework that I have shared, is five decades of age. My Mom is so meticulous and very orderly person and I am lucky that she passed those needleworks down to me.

Hmm I remember those white crochet curtains and bed covers we had at home too. I guess the people before us had more patience than us! Lol! It's good you've posted at last. Welcome to needleworkers and looking forward to more crochet works from you!

Yes, sis! They are more patient than the new generations, my ancestors' needlework are still intact. My mom is so meticulous when it comes to things especially pass on traditions.

I just sneaked my Mom's needlework from the cabinet for the meantime so I will have more ideas and to refresh my mind with crochet. 😉

Wow.. 😍 their patience in crocheting that big using only white color thread envied me. Hope we can continue it down to our great grand daughters. Thank you for sharing and welcome to #needleworkmonday community. ☺️

Our ancestors, of what I knew from my mother, they usually use white thread because of its neatness. I am so lucky that I have ancestors that really love needlework. Until now, I enjoy looking at the creation of their meticulous but lovely works. It pays off when you see the works of their hands with patience and love.

Cotton crochet is very strong when done in small stitches like your grandmother's work! I have many acrylic afghans made by a grandmother that require some mending on occasion, but the items made of cotton thread are so strong they still look new.

Oh, yes they are! Those crochet pieces are my Mom's work. Those are already 5 decades and you are right, still, look new.

Hello there, dear friend @jlufer, good day! I am lucky and grateful that I have ancestors who love needlework and pass it down to my Mom and to me. When I was in grade school crochet, tatting and embroidery are my passions in needlework and I got a 😉high grade in practical arts. I even made my teachers some pieces of my needlework as a keepsake and they are very much happy. Until now they say that they still have the needlework I made for them. Thank you so much that you like what I have shared and thank you too for dropping by.

It's good that you liked it so much dear friend @diosarich, at that age girls escape these things.

My mother and my sisters also made many of these crafts, Here it was very common to decorate the environments with these fabrics

Thank you very much for telling me about this experience
Have a wonderful night

You are welcome @jlufer. It's also nice to know that your mother and sisters have made their crafts as well. Needlework is also good for our mental health while expresses its own creativity.
