Muchas Gracias

How are you folks? I hope you are doing well. Sometimes we have heard that words are carried away by the wind, as some popular saying goes. But also that every word builds.

The truth is that nowadays there is a science known as neurolinguistics capable of studying the way we speak and relate it to our brain perception.

The way we think has a linguistic code, that is to say that depending on our language we can design patterns of behavior, habits and thoughts.

That is why I invite you to watch this video How language shapes our thoughts

In this interview with researcher and psychologist L. Boroditsky, she talks about how language can also make us develop more skills than other people according to the dominance of linguistic codes.

One of the examples the researcher talks about is the following:

On one occasion she told certain distinguished people to close their eyes and point with their hand to the south, none of them could give the correct direction with their hand. And She explains that our language to locate us in space-time goes from a time line from back to front or from left to right to name for example the days of the week.

untitled.gif
To locate an object in space, we point to the right or to the left. It is a fact that we all know, but a study conducted in a community in Australia; the people of that community orient themselves in space-time through the cardinal points.

So the researcher can ask them for the location of an object and they will represent it through a direction oriented to the north, south. East or west.

In fact she narrates, that she told a child to close his eyes and locate his grandmother's house and he perfectly does it with his hand, so any villager can locate the direction he is asked for quickly.

untitled.gif

In this way these villagers through their space-time language are good at orienting and locating themselves geographically. This is just to cite many of the great examples that can be seen in the interview.

***Another example that talks about the behavior of our brain and body is the placebo effect as the most powerful medicine.
()

This took me back to my childhood; One night I was coughing and wouldn't stop, my dad took some "cough medicine" and gave it to me in a Spoon, after a short time I stopped coughing. My dad just told me this is the cough medicine with this you will stop coughing and gave me a kiss on my forehead. He was just giving me the growth syrup and within a few minutes I stopped coughing*.

The researcher explains that the placebo effect is activated by the linguistic characters, the power of words in our brain and therefore in our body to feel better and even heal.

Currently the researcher and Psychologist L.Boroditsky develops the theme of metaphors in our way of thinking and developing our point of view to a situation.

She explains that the use of metaphor plays an important role in the perception of people and seeing things good or bad.

"An Abalanche of immigrants stalks the city."
"Immigrants give the economy a boost."

She explains that by giving them numerical value indexes of certain characteristics and facts different results can be obtained just by changing the concept of metaphors.

According to the character "Abalancha" and "Impulso" having even the same numerical values one can have a positive or negative image of the immigrants.

The truth is that it explains that far from having a purely mathematical or statistical conclusion is a linguistic character implicitly concealed in the codes of the language and that make a change in our thoughts.

I loved this topic and it is a valuable source of information to be able to learn about ourselves and the way we think.

I would be happy to invite you to watch the video.

Thank you very much.
