Television/Film Review: A Touch of Hope (1999)
If you happen to find yourself at the site of traffic accident helping a victim is right thing to do. Protagonist of A Touch of Hope, 1999 television film directed by Craig R. Baxley, does so and also discovers an extraordinary gift. Dean Kraft (played by Anthony Michael Hall) is businessman who rescues horribly injured woman from a wrecked car. He experiences strange sensations during it and later, much to his surprises, learns that the woman almost miraculously recovered from injuries. After a while he begins to ponder whether he has healing ability. Sceptical at first, he gradually begins to apply his new gift to friends and family and becomes famous which gets him in conflict with established medical community.
A Touch of Hope is based on non-fiction book by Kraft and his wife Rochelle. As such, the film obviously takes Kraft’s side of the story and is unlikely to be much appreciated by viewers of the more sceptical and rationalist persuasion. Like with many 1990s television productions, long and complex story is both simplified and “spiced up” in order to fit into 90 minute format. Although Craig R. Baxley, director best known for his stunt work, does somewhat adequate job and although Anthony Michael Hall does his best to make his protagonist likeable, A Touch of Hope still looks too much like a routine television film that can be watched only if there isn’t any alternative.
