From Chayote and Cabbage Harvest to New Opportunities: How Family Hard Work Inspired Me to Start a Vegetable Business

Hello everyone,

I feel like I am now entering another side of my career. Aside from being a writer, a mother, and a farmer, I am now trying something new. I decided to start a small vegetable business by helping my own siblings sell their harvest.

My siblings have a wide garden planted with cabbage and chayote. These vegetables are the result of their hard work and long hours in the farm. But sometimes, even when farmers work hard and produce a good harvest, the hardest part is finding buyers.

That is why I decided to buy some of their vegetables and try to sell them in the market. Honestly, this is something not new for me. I have been involved in farming and selling some of our own produce before, but this time, I am trying to wholesale their harvest and sell it to my own buyers in the market.

It is harvest time now, so we all prepared ourselves for a busy day.

When we arrived at my mother's house, we immediately started working. We removed the old covering net from the vegetables, cleaned the area, and prepared the cabbage for packing. We were all helping one another. There was no need for complicated instructions because we already knew what needed to be done.

We also harvested the sayote and washed them before putting them into sacks. I was happy because my playful nieces and nephews were also around. My daughter was with me too, so the whole harvest became a family activity.

After all the hard work, I was able to bring five sacks of sayote and almost 100 kilos of cabbage to the market.

But before going to the market, I honestly had second thoughts.

I was thinking, What if I cannot sell everything? What if the vegetables will be left unsold? I knew that bringing that much produce to the market was also a risk, especially because I am only starting.

But thankfully, we were blessed. It’s sold out. 😇

Our vegetables sold out so quickly! I was honestly surprised and very happy. All the hard work of my siblings and our family was worth it.

Maybe this is the beginning of another business for me.

I don't know yet where this new journey will take me, but I believe every business starts with one small step. For me, this is that step. I know this is a hard journey need to be more patience and hard work, to wake up early and need a strength of my own body so that I make it always.

I am happy that I can help my siblings sell their harvest while also trying something new for myself. It is not only about earning money. It is also about helping family, supporting the hard work of farmers, and having the courage to try another opportunity.

I am excited to see what comes next.

This is only the beginning of my new vegetable business journey.

I came across a video on Facebook featuring a farmer who said that one of the problems farmers face is the lack of an entrepreneurial mindset. He said that if you’re a farmer, you shouldn’t think of yourself as just a farmer, you should also think like a businessperson because you’re producing fresh products that you can sell.

I know someone who has a big farm, but they only grow fresh produce for their own consumption. I once suggested, “Why don’t you open a small store and sell some of your fresh produce there?” His response was, “No, I wouldn’t. I’d be too shy.”

I really think it’s better to be both a farmer and an entrepreneur so the fresh produce doesn’t go to waste. Of course, another option would be to learn how to preserve vegetables so they can last much longer, even up to a year, for example, by making pickles and other preserved products.

Anyway, I think what you’re doing is really good. Selling your produce shows that you have a business mindset, too.
