He was the son of Hiranyakashyap,a demon king, who wanted to get worshipped instead of Lord Vishnu. But Prahalada was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He used to worship Lord Vishnu . So his father was angry with him and tried to kill him .So his father took help of his aunt "Holika" to burn him alive.Holika has a boon that the fire could not burn her.So Holika sat in fire along with Prahalada. Prahalada chanted the name of Lord Vishnu.And the result was that Holika was burnt into ashes and Prahalada was safe.

Prahalada was a good person and Holika was not a good person. This shows the victory of good over the evil. So that's why we celebrate Holika dahan.

After this the next day we celebrate Holi, in this all people play with colours,greet each other and celebrate Holi happily.
