Welcome to Part 39 of "Document 13", a dystopian graphic novel I'm creating with my daughter. This week: "Reluctant Hero."
I just realized that this is as far as I have gotten. I guess I will have to get off my duff and pick it back up for 2023!

The year is 2074, the world has been plunged into darkness. One girl, Sarah Doe, will learn the secrets of the dark forces that run the ruined world. With the help of a few friends, her family, and her own powers she will fight to return the world to an order not known since well before her birth. Will she succeed? Read to find out!

Scene: Metro tunnel. The group is packing up camp. Sarah and Maia are sitting on rubble somewhat distant from the group.
Maia: Have you thought about it?
Sar: I never intended on going back, you don’t know the kind of danger we would be returning to.
Maia: We came prepared for danger…
Sar: Not against the Orphans. They… we… are something that should never have been.
Maia: Sarah, we all have a purpose. Even the Orphans exist for a reason.
Sar: But the things I have done…
Maia: Let the past be the past. You can use your abilities for good. You are the only one who can help us take down the Empire.
Sar: The Empire has never concerned me.
Maia: The Empire created you through a cruel project. The Empire keeps us all in chains. The Empire destroyed the world as it was, as it still should be. It claimed to be the savior of humanity but it was only a platform for the entitled few who learned how to tame the weak and powerless. The Empire is evil embodied.
Sar: Ha! All the Party scum I have dealt with were laughable. Hardly the kind to take over anything…
Maia: Power is a funny thing. The comfort of it often leads to weakness and complacency. When one doesn’t have to survive, there is nothing to sharpen the will, nothing to challenge the mind. The soul of a man begins to atrophy and rot. He finds all sorts of frivolity to keep his wits about him. It is precisely this weakness which gives us hope for overcoming then. And now we have soldiers….
Sar: We are people…. If there is a “we” beyond the eight I know of…
Maia: Yes, you are. People with a gift. People who can give hope to the rest of us. We all have a purpose, we all have a duty to leave the world better than we found it….
Sar: It’s a curse. What if I never die? What if I watch the world crumble completely? What if I have to watch every single person die around me?
Maia: Then you mustn’t fail. Turn your curse into a blessing by preventing the crumbling. Save the world.
Sar: I haven’t saved anyone. I can’t.
Maia: You don’t know your future until you live it. Take us to the city and see who we can save together. We need to get to Dr. Bureau’s data. Please, Sarah, use your gifts for good.
Sarah reluctantly stands.
Sar: I don’t have much to live for, honestly. But I can’t die. So fine. I will take you to Bureau for your data, but after that we empty the orphanage and bring them out of the city.
Maia: If we can we will. Thank you.
They walk back to the group.
Maia: Gather up, we are going to the city.
