Do you Remember the Gettysburg Address?

Today is the 157th anniversary of one of the most famous speeches ever given -- the Gettysburg Address. Did you know? I had forgotten all about it! The opening words, "four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal" … Wow! Just think about the speech and what it means, from so long ago. The words "the world will little note nor long remember what we say here" are also often quoted because of the irony of the fact that it is one of the most remembered and quoted speeches of all time. It is one of the very first speeches I memorized, as did my kids.

This speech gave renewed strength to the country by redefining what a nation should be. Is there a speech that has great meaning to you, even if it wasn't famous?

Some days, it is not as easy to see, just how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do*

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Shakespeare

I just like canons. lol. Nice pic! I hope the country remembers at least a few of the lessons from that war and doesn't repeat itself!

I pray that the speech is still as effective today as it was so long ago. We so need to care for each other unified as a nation in all countries more than ever before. Blessings.
Love the flower.

I am not much with history that they were pretty powerful words and is something to uphold forever without repeats 👍

Funny almost is the fact that even after so many years, are we as a nation much less divided? Seems we were, and are now still a perfect 50-50 split... Hopefully we will not see another civil war but it is not without the realm of possibilities.
