Horsing Around with Market Friday

Life can be unpredictable, allowing for the unexpected to happen. I have come to expect it and try not to let it ruin my day. Admittedly, it never happens when I have that thing called time, or actually, and more fittingly, more time. Let's meander up the lane, I hear there are a couple of horses just waiting for us up there.

20230520_140037.jpg

To the right is a vineyard, which is innocent looking from the front view, but the back and sides stretch out seemingly forever. Looking at all those grapes inspired me to grow some of my own vines, years back, and now, I have some grapes which can be made into a few bottles of wine at the end of the season. Or you can make grape juice, your choice.

Whenever I walk by, the cows run up to the fence with lofty expectations of food. I am not certain who has been feeding them this way, but, it has made them a bit spoiled. So, I walk up to the fence and give them a pet. They give me big cow eyes in response. I know! It is #MarkertFriday and I am taking my time getting there, aren't I? For the backstory, it all started with a phone call. Doesn't it always?

20230520_140509.jpg

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

One of my girls called me and asked me to come to the barn and check out one of the horses. Actually, it was the pony. He is tall enough to be a horse, so they call him a horse so he doesn't feel slighted. Seriously? Okay. While I was coming, could I stop by the Farm Store and pick up a hoof pick? That is not a normal tool to miss as we check out their hooves every day, and it is religiously put back in the tool bucket. Obviously, I can longer say that, can I?

Who can resist petting the kitty? And it isn't even #caturday, is it? Honestly? I am up for petting the Kit Kats any day of the week. As a matter of fact, they insist on it.

20230520_141338.jpg

I go to the Farm Store, where it is always fun to go! What did they have but little Tom Turkeys? Sweet! Until they get big. But, right now, they are pretty sweet. The baby turkeys and chickens were put in the same cage. One little girl almost had her father talked into four turkeys until he realized they weren't chicks! The chickens were very light-colored and tiny. The cost of those adorable little turkeys was $7.95. A worthy deal. They are easy keeps! Okay! Hoof Pick!

20230520_125432.jpg

Tell the truth!! Aren't they so cute? Now think of the big Tom, with his gobbler down the front of his face. It would probably help if I look in the Equine section of the store to find what I need. The farm stores are sectioned off into different areas to make finding the merchandise easier. I find the hoof pick and with a little brush on it, it is only $3.95 which is an average price. For the money, it is a great buy. To maintain great foot health, you should check and pick the feet of your horse every day. If they are in a pasture and not easily available, do a visual check to make sure that everything looks normal. I look for abnormalities in the hoof, not looking normal. I pick out the dirt and debris in the foot and check for anything lodged in there that would make them sore or uncomfortable. Pictured below is my daughter picking the feet of another horse.

20230520_141747.jpg

She does a good job with all the horses, and the pony too. Hw is almost finished shedding out his winter coat, it takes forever, unless we take a shortcut and give him a bath. It helps take away the loose hair. Soon, his coat will be sleek and beautiful once again.

20230520_140952.jpg

Well, let me tally up all my merchandise from the farm store. Are you with me?

$3.95 hood pick
Mane N' Tail shampoo $11.95 It was so expensive, I didn't get it. It is only
$6.95 at Target You have to know your prices.
Curry comb $10.95 The combs are massaged into the skin...
5 sugarless horse cookies $0.75

$15.65 Not too bad, but, I didn't get the shampoo. I will get it this week and he will get a bath later in the week.

20230520_144440.jpg

The grass is green and lush, and the horses are bused, combed, and even given a cookie, sugarless of course. No carrots or apples, my bad. I kept the expenditures down and the morale up. Not a bad day at all!

20230520_145238.jpg

What a life! Although I don't mind sugarless cookies, and I usually make them myself and this way, they are good for human consumption and pet ponies. :)

It is very green there, especially at this time of year.

Have you tried riding on them?

I have ridden horses for a very long time. I have ridden them even longer than that. Indeed. I have ridden all of them. I still ride, along with all of my kids.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words.

Haha! He is actually on the small side of a horse! :) I call him pony to his face. :) Those baby turkeys are adorable, but, they grow up to be dominant creatures, so no thanks. My brother has one that still chases me out of his yard. It is like a guard dog.

Those are some beautiful shots! What an amazing are you live in! Believe it or not, I was scrolling through one of my social media feeds the other day and for some reason a video popped up that was people trimming and re-shoe-ing horses hooves. It was fascinating. I sat and watched the whole thing. Then of course more started to pop up...

isn't it, though? I thought it was just me and because we have horses. The pony (that is horse size) is a wild pony from Chincoteague Island that we bought at the auction. They don't wear shoes, and so what is not to love about him? Shoeing a horse cost more than buying a pair of shoes. Over $100.00! The only thing the one wild horse needs is to have its hooves trimmed and most times, I just use a rasp (big file) and file them, almost like using an emery board. :)

Thank you! Virginis is gorgeous and you don't even have to be but a few miles out of DC for it to have a bit of the green.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words!

I tried growing some grapes here a couple of years ago. You should have seen the size of them... Tiny!!!

Did you give up on them right away? Small grapes can be from poor pollination (while the flowers are blooming) Did you dare try them? :)

We did try them, bitter little things. Like an old smokers fingers.

We have it a chance for a couple of years but the second year it didn't even sprout any!

0

avatar

OMG! Like old smokers' fingers. That even sounds gross So that is so very telling right there.

Nothing off the wood? You had just sticks? I trim in the winter and leave short spurs on the trunk and main branches, They need full sun to bloom those flowers and you are in Scotland!! That never happened when I was there! Hehe... maybe once or twice, But, it is so beautiful, the weather becomes incidental.

Do you know what they say about sour grapes? leave them on the vine longer and they will be dripping with sweetness.

Sometimes that is a lie too! :)

I trimmed it quite close so that over winter it just looked like a nobbly stick. It started growing quite enthusiastically in late spring but I think that year was another bad one and it didn't really do much!

The lack of sin is why we drink so much I think 🤣🤣

A balm to the soul for sure, what a lovely place @dswigle!
Those baby Turkeys sure look cute, but really are not a pretty sight once they grow up, poor things;)
The horse pony has a beautiful hairstyle, so well-groomed, lucky fella to live in green pastures like that!
I love that image of the grape vines, you're fortunate to live in an area where they grow well.
They do very well in the Cape province, but stay tiny and sour here in our subtropical climate.
Thanks for the shout-out for Hive Thrifted Denise :)

Thank you, you are so sweet!

The only time turkeys are sweet is when they are babies! Henry has Fabio's hair, we used to call him Fabio as he was always strutting around with his beautiful mane. The other two have beautiful hair, but, not luxurious like his. :)

Vineyards are always beautiful to me, and we are very lucky to live in a place where they do well, for sure! I guess I am surprised they don't do well where you are. I would say that we have evolved into more Mediterranean weather here, although sometimes cooler. That tiny grapes surprise me, but, now you have me curious and I am going to have to look at why that is.

I apologize for the same shout-out, but, I promise to put together a different one this week. ❤️

Those poor turkeys sure aren't handsome when they grow up😉
Only subtropical fruit does well here, mangoes, bananas, papayas, lychees, etc. Grapes, apples, pears, peaches, and plums is mostly grown in the Cape.
Your shoutout for HT is perfect Denise, I really appreciate it.
Have a wonderful weekend 🥰

I have some grapes which can be made into a few bottles of wine at the end of the season. Or you can make grape juice, your choice.

Probably I would either eat the grapes, or make grape juice. I very rarely drink wine and alcohol in general.

The chickens were very light-colored and tiny. The cost of those adorable little turkeys was $7.95. A worthy deal. They are easy keeps!

For those, who have a good garden. An adult turkey is a large bird. Their length is between 100-124.90 cm, and they can be very heavy (39 kg). They can be kept as a pet, and they are good as a food source too, and their litter can be used as fertilizer, and as fuel too.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.
All the best. Greetings and much love from Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.

While they may make great pets, I don't like my brothers' turkey, it is kind of dominant and has chased me out of his yard. LOL

They are a good food source and they forage for bugs and such, so that is good, but, I do not want/need one. :)

Hello, there! I hope all is sunny and beautiful in Tenerife today! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words.

You can grow grapes in containers. Rule of thumb says 6 feet per grapevine. Here is an easy-to-follow guideline here

The drinking grapes? Only if you are a pretty, pretty princess pony horse.
Seriously, fresh off the vine or in a glass, grapes are the best.

We have had a Medsiterranina winter for the past three years. No snow, no freeze, and very little frost. What? It is true, but, even then, we are still colder than you1

Three-day holiday makes this blogger behind. This is my life, it seems! :)

When we were still living in Johannesburg, we would be getting frost during winter, but that was about it. Since we've been living down here at the coast, no frost, no nothing...hahaha! If the temperature goes below 23 degrees Celcius it's getting cold... As a matter of fact, currently, it is cloudy and it's 22 degrees Celcius and I'm wearing a jacket😄!

Three-day holiday...! That sounds great! I hope you are well rested! All the best with catching up! Have fun!

A jacket!! :)) Well, I am sure you were chilly if you put it on! I must say that I sleep with the windows open all year long, except when it is too hot. Even at 0C or less, I love it as I like to be warm but in a cool room.

Generally, I am not ever cold, except on rainy days.

Memorial Day was this weekend and it was very busy, but, a nice military remembrance day.

Yeah, life is unpredictable, if you let yourself down with bad unpredictable things. But well I know it's far from happening to you. You always find yourself busy and that is what makes you cheerful. By the way, I did not know about horses. I thought checking their feet just do it randomly, I was surprised by it, thanks..

Interesting about horses' feet though. So much happens and it is usually to do with their feet.

Awww thank you. I will let my daughter know. :) Thank you for dropping by and leaving your words!

I still can't believe such farms are near Washington DC, they seem so rural and far from urban civilization. Your passion for horses explains your many knowledge of caring for them and I can tell it is a great and powerful passion. It has to do with your education and the chance you had to live close to these very special animals. I like horses a lot myself but from afar. I've rarely been up close and have always been afraid. Respect them but also fear, I must admit. Thus, the admiration I have for horses, I have seen in movies since childhood.

I'm glad, @dswigle, that you manage to get close to horses so often, and that your daughter is as passionate and I can say... practical. Life's little or big pleasures, I think we can say it both ways without being wrong.

I'm sticking with the classic and simple market, store visit, I mean just visit... that's my post this week: I was downtown again, and again, and...

My own mom who has been around horses had always had a few of them. She was always around and really liked them, but, the size made her fear them. She also respected, but, fear them. I think that is okay, it is not for everyone. There are actually quite a few horse farms in DC, and many horse stables in Washington, DC. Believe it or not. Twenty-minute drive, less than ten miles, and there are enough places with space to do whatever you want. Not as rural as it seems, but, plenty of space. :) That is one of the reasons I have loved it here so much.

I always look forward to your posts, Dan! @bluemoon :)
I hope you have had a great weekend!

That explains your admiration for horses, it comes from far away, from your family and I can see that you pass it on to your children.
I love where you live and the surroundings. I think that's why you don't really miss traveling, except for the sea.

That's why I hope you don't have to move out of this place... unless you find something even better!

I have three replies from you that I have to answer... I always answer you last because I need more time. Please forgive me for being late!

I see you've also fallen into the trap of time, not enough time. I wish you a pleasant and relaxing weekend, absolutely necessary for recharging your batteries!

And it is Memorial Day Weekend, a flurry of activity especially involving the military families and military... Arlington Cemetery and the putting the flags on the graves. I am so far behind, I didn't even start the markets.

Today is the closing ceremony and I might not go as it has started to rain pretty hard. I am on my way home now and I am calling it done! Time to make food!

Never worry. I am always behind on replies!~ :) I hope your weekend was wonderful!

I don't think we get to see horses much here other than at the race track
Sorry, missed out posting my Friday lunch before.

No problem, Ace! @ace108

Asia is low on horses, it seems. Except for the racetrack! My aunt and uncle used to race their horses. They loved training them to race. I used to exercise their horses around their own personal track.

I was small and light. Perfect sized jockey, until I got taller. :)

Thanks so much for your words and for dropping your link!

Vines on the land, horses stabled, this sounds so very inviting, being at one in nature.

Shopping one gets to know what is required at the right prices, home baked treats sounds superb being sugar free.

Wishing you a wonderful Sunday !LUV

Hi, my pretty friend! Here's a noodle house that answered my yearning for a food that I crave to eat since my childhood days. With just around $4.00, you will be able to have yourself a satisfying bowl of good food. Check it out here:
A cozy eatery with affordable but satisfying congee and noodle specialties. A must-try to every one! https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@landrover007/when-yearnings-turned-to-cravings
