Maine-ly Acadia National Park on Market Friday

Welcome to Maine! This is just a tiny piece of the dramatic coastline that is part of the Acadia National Park. In actuality, it has a 64-mile coastline and this is just a sample of it. It is located on Mount Desert Island and shares borders with the coastal town of Bar Harbor. It is often photographed and on my list of most visited by my family. I like to stand on the rocks, daring the waves to crash around me.

This relationship benefits both. Bar Harbor is known as the Gateway to Acadia and people come to Bar Harbor as a jump-off to the park. There are views that are proliferating in the shadows of the rocky cliffs, the waves constant motion eroding them, changing their look.

Below is a map of the area, hopefully making it easier for you to see where I am talking about. It is an island as you can see, with quaint little fishing villages all around. I go there a few times a year, just because it is pretty, peaceful and they have the prettiest leaves in the Autumn. Road trip to Bar Harbor!! Who's in?

Acadia has pink granite! See below? That is granite. The entire area is granite, mixed with forests of spruce trees and pitch pine. It is more beautiful in person, but, of course it is not nearly the finished product.

The Cadillac Mountain Granite is amongst the largest bodies of granite on the island, and it is also one of the oldest in the region (~420 million years old). Younger, dark-colored igneous dikes (diabase) cuts across lighter-colored intrusive igneous rock (granite) As read on the National Park Sign.

This is one of the views of Cadillac Mountain, and, at 1,530 feet (466 meters), is the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard. A little-known fun fact? It is the first place to see the sunrise in the United States, but you have to do that between the dates of October 7 and March 6th. Before or after that time, all bets are off.

One of the most striking surface features you notice on Cadillac Mountain are the deep scratches or gouges in the bare granite that seem to follow north-south directions. The reason is quite simple. This area has undergone millions of years of climate changes during which there were several enormous continental glaciers that squashed the land and sheered off mountaintops. The last glacier retreated about 18,000 years ago, was over 1 mile high, and reached as far as 400 miles out to sea. It was so powerful that it actually shifted the orientation of the mountains from east-west to north-south. Well before these events, 360 - 380 million years ago during a time referred to as the Devonian Period, volcanic forces were at play. The magma chamber of a volcano collapsed. What is now seen as the summit of Cadillac Mountain is actually one edge of the collapsed volcano. source

Acadia is actually in a transitional zone of two ecoregions, the northern boreal forest, and the eastern deciduous forest. They also have places that have other hardwoods such as oak, beech, and maple there. What is boreal? It is a forest that is characterized by its varied coniferous type of trees. Many things about the area are distinctive, including the types of animals found there, birds, and some unique plants. It is unique in the fact that there is also a traditional forest and the two blend in perfect harmony.

More raw granite. I say raw as it has a process before you can lay that on your countertop. But, in person, it is the prettiest shade of pink. The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. is doing a facelift after fifty years. They used the pink granite that is from one of the quarries up in the area. There is only a handful of them and it is this special granite that they used and want to replace with the same.

Over 20% of Acadia is classified as wetland. It is not just relegated to wetlands. There are swamps, bogs. and many marshes. It makes their florals and fauna interesting.

If you go into Bar Harbor, stop at Into the Woods 160 Main St. downtown. Everything is handcrafted using felled trees. The proceeds are put toward preserving Maine woodlands as wildlife and nature.

The merchandise was pretty incredible. I loved the birdhouses, but, really wanted to take the canoe home. They made dishes, bowls, and even a giant rocking horse that babies to grannies had to give a go to it. Before you ask, yes, I did. It was pretty tall and yes. I loved it.

Cannons were temporarily placed near the harbor at Egg Rock Island. A battery was established to protect the entrance to Frenchman Bay and the harbors of Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor. They make a great photo op too.

I want to thank you for coming along to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park with me, There is so much more to see and do, you will never run out of things if you stayed there a year. It is a cute little town, but, the hiking is great here and the history is steep. I hope you get to check it out someday. If you do, there is one coffee shop in town and it has 3 tables and six seats. Be early and be friendly. :))

Well worthwhile paying to enter parks like this, seeped in beauty well maintained for everyone to enjoy, which reminds me most of our parks are paid parks too!

Lovely granite rock formations, water thundering below steep cliff, nice wood carvings to consider to purchase to take home with you as a reminder of a remote island rich in nature.
