Market Friday joins the Angel Tree Program

avatar
(Edited)

It is the same. Every year, at this time, I go over my checklist to make sure I didn't forget anything. Mailed outgoing packages: check...Christmas cards written out: check...Gifts Wrapped: check... Cookies made: check... Prime Rib ordered: check... Airport runs coordinated: check... Wine bought: check ... House cleaned: Almost..... While visions of sugar plums dance in my head...

*

#MarketFriday has been busy! It is a busy time of year for me, especially as it is always about the family and there are many - and then a few more than that. I wouldn't have it any other way. I adore the warm and wonderful feeling of being surrounded by all that love.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

My elves are helping me wrap. We are on a mission! The wrapped packages that are being done now are destined for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. Every year, thousands upon thousands of gifts are given to needy children and the elderly. Almost every person in the US is familiar with the Angel Trees at the local Walmart or mall hallways with trees, and paper angels with names on them hanging off of them. D you have that program where you live?

Gradient - Green.png

When I became interested in donating to the Angel Program, I went to a store that sponsored the tree and removed a paper angel from the tree, adopting it. It has a first name, age, and suggestions on things they need. This is helpful so that you can purchase and donate an item that is needed instead of guessing. There is a number associated with the paper angel you selected, so you must number your gifts so that they can meet up. When the window is open for the Salvation Army Drop off locations, you can drop off the item(s) for distribution. Normally, I drop them off at the same location where I got the angel to begin with.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree program helps provide Christmas gifts for hundreds of thousands of children around the country each year. Once a child or senior adult has been registered and accepted as an Angel their Christmas wish list is shared with donors in your community who purchase gifts of new clothing and toys.

Love.png

My family and I set aside time and money to participate in the program. We have been fortunate in life to not have ever been in need. It has always been important to me to give back and I am happy that my kids do it on their own now. They all donate different things to their community, one tutor's math, one donates time in a food kitchen, and although it is only once or twice a month, it is what she can afford to give. My son leans towards the elderly. It matters not what you do, as long as you do it out of love for mankind.

As always, there must be flowers to color my world. #alwaysaflower The beauty of the poinsettia is forever engraved on the blockchain. I dedicate this post to all of you. You bring joy to my soul and spread your love across the world. For this, I thank you. And just like that, these musings are done. If I don't see you, I want to wish you a warm and wonderful Christmas. ❤️

An unusual #MarketFriday, but, a market all the same. In light of the season of giving, I Purchased much-needed clothing and a few fun items for a few younger kids. I donated my time and food to the Food Pantry, You never know how lucky you are until you work in one. I am very aware that many people are one check away from being homeless. It is usually not something people choose.

Compassion /kəmˈpaSH(ə)n/ noun

"the victims should be treated with compassion" as per the Oxford dictionary.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it?

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? I need something other than 50 pictures of the market.
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess about some
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
  6. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.
As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Some days, it is not as easy to see, just how wonderful it really is. Me, I try to do my part. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

So he paused. And the Grinch put his hand to his ear.
And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low. Then it started to grow.
But the sound wasn't sad! Why, this sound sounded merry!
It couldn't be so! But it WAS merry! VERY!
He stared down at Whoville! The Grinch popped his eyes!
Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!
He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?"
"It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!"
"It came without packages, boxes or bags!"
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store."
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”

Wow! What a great idea! I wish we had similar project like this here. The veterans are well looked after and entitled to various social and health services. But they don’t get New Year gifts from other people.

It works very well here and gives it a more personal touch when you know who/where you are helping. This program is not aimed at veterans, they have other agencies taking care of them and those needs, as Angel Tree is for children and the elderly.

Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to seeing all the upcoming posts on Chinese New Year, always a great time!

Best post of today by a mile.
I just love helping and seeing others do the same. We used to do this in Florida, I loved the idea you knew who you were donating for.
We don't really have the same global countrywide program over here.
So we do it through one of the churches.

Merry Christmas Denise to you and your family

I am very pleased with the way Angel Tree works its details, keeping with the original plan and expanding it without changing its mission of children and the elderly. While nobody should be omitted, ever, but, especially the season of joy, there are other agencies that provide for adults.

I have done it through my church and I have to admit, they usually provide well for their own. So, either way, it is all good.

Merry Christmas to you and your lovely wife, Ed!!! Happy New Year cometh! Will there be haggis in your future? :)

Well Christmas for me has always been about the kids, whereas New Year is for the adults, so Angel Tree is fantastic.
Thank you and funnily enough I has some fried haggis on my fry up yesterday morning that I made us hehe.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Denise, time for me to pop that turkey in o the oven now :)

Maybe, but, warning: probably not. Denise is a cheap drunk. 🤣

It's a mental checklist, but, I have it. It keeps it flowing and even if I am a little busier, it's not a stressful busy. Easy does it. It's the Season of Joy.

I hope you are enjoying your nephew and brother. How long will they be staying?

Lol, one and you're done?

I picked up my nephew from the airport last night. He's such a good kid, so funny and thoughtful. It was late in the evening so we came home, I showed him around and we chatted for a bit. The fun starts today. He'll be here for just under a couple weeks and I'm so happy to have him and his parents here. It's going to be a good Christmas.

You are going to have such a good time. I hope you are making videos and pictures, which I know you are. Put together something for him so he can watch it over and over. He will love it!

I know you are so busy! Don't let the kid run you down. :)

I had not heard of the angel tree program but love the idea and next year I am going to find a location here that takes part
In Milford we would donate gifts to the toys for Tots but haven’t seen a drop off spot for it here

It's easy to miss as it is usually displayed as a tree with paper angels on it. I passed it for a few years before I stopped to see what it was. I think the first I saw was not in Connecticut - mostly because we didn't have a lot of malls and no WalMarts to speak of, years ago. :) That is where they live. :)

So, I understand! There used to be something called the Giving Tree in the Connecticut Post Mall, and it worked sort of the same, but, with a different agency. We need them all!

You can find the facility closest to where you live by entering your ZIP code in the location finder at SalvationArmyUSA.org.

Thanks so much for your participation, JJ! @tattoodjay

I think I have seen the tree with paper angels but never looked to see what it was all about

Next year I am building up a list of things to do, find a giving tree and Toys for tots here, the Christmas tree ornaments and I am sure there was something else but have forgotten what it is at the moment

The company I work for has always had "Angel Trees" that the employees can help out with if they want. They will put up Christmas Trees in several of our main locations where anyone can take an angel and then bring back the presents by a certain date to be pick up by those associations that will distribute them. The employees normally step up in a big way, Some years they have run out of angels quickly and asked for more. I'm sure if there were ever any left, our corporate made sure the requests were filled.

It's nice to give when you can. Even if like you and me, we have never needed such a service, life isn't over yet and one never knows what the future could hold.

It's a good thing.

I love companies that participate! They depend on them to reach their goals. Some companies give incentives to participate, but, I think most just put out the tree and people participate. Kudos to the corporate that most likely fill in the blanks of what was left.

A company with a heart.

It is nice to give if you can, I have to agree and I am thankful every day that I have never needed it. But, the truth is, we are all just a paycheck away from homelessness. I have volunteered at a couple of shelters in different places. I was taken back that some in there were once living the life

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words. I wish you a warm and wonderful season of joy! Merry Christmas! ❤️

Hello Denise !
The Christmas period is also the blessed time for checked lists ^^ !

It's great that you're involved in this operation, the equivalent must probably exist in France, I'll look into it... But you don't see this without supermarkets, or at least not in the ones I go to.

I wish you and your family a wonderful end of year period, take care of yourself and see you soon for discoveries and curious and colorful Friday markets !

Here, my modest journey of the day :)

I am sure there has got to be something there. In Eastern Europe, the Salvation Army is there also and they call it the Wish Tree so I am sure you have something. I never see them in supermarkets, but, I do see them in the Malls. Or in our Walmart stores. They buddy up with them in a good way.

Thank yu for dropping your link!

Thank you for your wishes and I also wish you and your wife Good tidings, and good cheer, for a wonderful end to the year!

Joyeux Noël!!

My inlaws have already expressed an interest in doing some kind of donation thing next year instead of buying a bunch of presents for each other. I think that makes a lot of sense. It is silly to buy stuff just so you can say you gave a gift. That's my thinking anyway. No presents under our tree yet this year. Just this:

That makes perfect sense to me. I actually dont buy a gift for someone who needs nothing, just to cover the square. I might make a dinner for them, giving them a free night off, we have given gift coupons for something you can do for a grandparent, such as mowing.... and the golden one you mention, donating in their name.

That's awesome!! May you have a merry and bright holiday!

I have never heard of such a program of assistance. this is a great act of kindness! and it's so right that you know exactly what these people need. How often does it happen that someone gives others something that they do not need at all. I admire those people who are willing to volunteer their time and money to help those who really need help. you and your children have a very good heart, dear!

I love that you can get something they really want! They give several ideas on what would be good. I have never seen any that get ridiculous with their requests. So, it is fun to try to find the perfect gift.

I think most people enjoy giving and there is no limit on what a person can do for another. It doesn't even have to cost anything. My son mowed a neighbors lawn for two years (the older gentleman had a heart attack when we first moved there) and it cost my son nothing but time. He was too young to work, so this worked for him. Besides, the man didn't need money. He needed help. He could have hired someone, but, I am glad he let my son do it. He learned many lessons by doing it. Compassion, responsibility, how to schedule his life around it, friendship and love... much more too. So now I will be quiet. I wrote too much already. :)

Thank you for being part of the challenge!

Reading this brings me so much joy.
I like the Angel tree program since one is able to buy the very much needed items.
Although we do not have such programs here directly, individuals take up charity course like this on a personal note.

My friends grandma and families have a widows ministry she runs and all through the year there is fund raising from herself and individuals who care to donate,
these funds are used to buy a new change of clothes, food supplies and others for widows in our communities at christmas.

We usually hold christmas carols with the disabled and people of special needs giving out gifts to them...

Most of the Christmas love and giving in on individual level.

Am just happy and glad that you have taught the kids that virtue, its a blessing to have a heart of giving.

I did a general survey of peoples financial activities during this festive period and gave a piece of how we can stay happy and contented with whatever we have if we cannot afford all we need in this season..
Christmas is more about love rather than worldliness and search for fun.

That's a great program or initiative to help the needy. And it's amazing that your children are onto it as well, doing what they can for others. We do not have the same program but we do have donation boxes in the locality, mostly done privately or through different local organizations.

Have a fantastic Christmas❤️
