Market Friday - The Saddlery Liquidators

avatar
(Edited)

If you want a new outfit, where do you go? Well, if you were a horse, you would go to a saddlery, also known as a tack shop. Everything you could ever think of for a horse. If you own a horse or three, they are fun stores to walk through, even if you buy nothing. I would compare it to a toy store for kids. Mine never needed to buy it, just looking was enough for their enjoyment.

Breeches, boots, helmets, saddle, saddle pad, halter, bit, reins... the proper equipment is endless. Or seemingly so. Truth be told, unless you are riding in a competition or s horse show, you can dress however you want. Bareback too, I let the horses dress down too.

henry 39.jpg

Horse tack is the term my family uses when referring to the equipment we use, the riding gear. I tack up when getting ready to ride a horse.

20181213_132240 horse.jpg

The Saddlery Liquidators is a great place to shop for equipment. It has new and used, a real bonus as it comes at a steep price to purchase equipment. I am fortunate that I have an uncle that is a horse trainer/breeder and has always given me new equipment (and used) that is no longer useful to him. This has been a real money-saver! One trip through any tack shop is likely to make your heart stop. To be fair, we have more equipment than is actually needed, especially when the price is right.

ponies.jpg

I bought shampoo the last time I went to the tack shop. I did a quick comparison of brands before I got there. for the price of $19.73 for 12oz or $172.00 for a gallon, I chose DermaBenSs Horse Shampoo because it was safe for dogs, cats, and horses. Bingo! I can use it for all three. Moisturizes and restores dry skin, something one of the horse has a sometimes problem with, plus it has no real smell. Bonus. I always read the directions on products, instead of investigating why it doesn't work as advertised. It is easiest when you are bathing your horse to use a soapy sponge on the coat you have already wet down. I add the shampoo to the bucket of water and use a small circle pattern to wash them. I don't wash them all the time, and hardly ever in the winter unless they are in a show.

Gradient - Green.png

On another note, in between shampoos, I use Mane ‘N Tail Pet Shampoo, the best value for the money. It comes in a 32oz bottle for $14.99 and lathers nicely. The downside is that it doesn't last long. It uses more shampoo than other brands. By the way, if you run out of your own shampoo, it works well for human hair... Just saying.

20181213_131226 saddlws.jpg

They carry a large selection of new and used saddles in both English and Western and everything for the Polo Ponies. In the heart of horse country, it is never unusual to see people riding through the National Parks here, even in downtown Washington, DC there is a horse stable where you can ride a horse in Rock Creek Park. they take their equine seriously here.

20181213_131248 saddle.jpg

I looked at a saddle that was being consigned, which is when a person sells an item through the store. It is in the store and when sold, the seller gets a percentage of the price it is sold for. When a price is put on the item the basic rule of thumb in consignment is to price the item 25% – 40% of the original price that was paid. When we are talking saddles, many times, they are hardly worn.

I was looking at a saddle that was barely worn. Pinnacle Kirkby Close Contact Saddle... Nice leather on it. $1300.00! It will make a nice saddle for someone, even brand new, there is no breaking in. This close-contact saddle, in particular, creates a closer feel to your horse.

reins.jpg

Aisles of reins! The reins are what you use to drive and steer the horse. Finding the proper rein is important. Find a length that will help you ride on a loose rein with a relaxed hand. Reins come in a variety of lengths, typically 48" for ponies, 52" for cobs or small horses, 54" for average-sized horses, and 60" for oversize horses. Dover Saddlery

English: $20.00-$250.00+ The type of reins you buy are based on the type of riding you do. I am doing English for this purpose. I found a nice set for $129.00 I'll keep that in mind. I am pretty sure we are broke by now, so we will end this little adventure and see what is out there in the #MarketFriday markets. I hope you left me some good ones! Thank you for taking the time to check mine out.

The Saddlery Liquidators has many different equipment to explore, I think it is really good for the one who are looking for stuff that it is rarely sell outside. Happy market Friday!

I agree! It is a fun place to explore and most times, I really don't need anything, but, it is a pleasure to do a walk-through and see what is new.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day!

Wow! It's a one stop shop for all horses and horse riders. I haven't seen a store like that here. It might be horses here is not common. We can only see a lot of horses in the mountainous areas.

That would be the reason. There would be no value in having a store that people won't buy from. I can see that the horses you have there are a part of the workforce but in this part of the country, it is work and pleasure.

The stores are geared more towards that and mostly use a farm store to buy their equipment. I think they are better priced as it is functional equipment.

Thanks for stopping by!

Horses are amazing creatures. I never had the chance to get to know them but now, with your post, I know a lot about their care if I ever have one to take care of :)

My mom has always been intimidated by them, even though she has been around them for much of her life. I think it is their size as she is a petite woman. All of my kids ride and always have, but, if they lost interest, I would be fine with that. It is too expensive a hobby to do without true love. (At least the ownership part of it)

Everyone should be free to love them. :)

Wow that's a huge collections of horse wears... I've never really thought of a store that sells horse stuffs, this is totally new and super cool to me.

The second picture, is it a model horse or it's your horse trying out a new wear?

It's nice reading this, I love it and the flower too 🥰

Here is my #marketfriday post

Thanks for the initiative ma'am, I just need to get in the habit of doing this more often 🥲

The first picture is of our horse, Henry. The second is a horse mannequin! It was a life-size horse, so it always gets a lot of attention. :) He was trying on a sheet. (a common reference for a rain blanket or a cover for light warmth)

If horse riding is popular in the area, chances are they will have a tack shop of some kind. Very glad you enjoyed the flower too! Thank you!

Wow Henry is his name, cool!
I see, never knew there were also horse mannequin 😅 I keep learning

I think that justifies it, we don't have much horses here... There are only few people who have them here.

I'm glad I did, thanks for having me 😊

What an expensive shopping trip, but a fun one :) Is that you and your horse in the first picture?

It can be a very expensive shopping trip! Thankfully, I am supplemented by family that raises horses for a living and I tend to live off many of their unused equipment. I do buy some, but, if possible, I will use what is given to me.

There are many products, such as shampoo where a cheaper version can be used, and although many times it isn't as good as the pricier version, there are many times where that doesn't make a difference.

I had to look at the picture again to see which I used. It is not me in this one, although it is my horse. He was having a great time doing the course. This guy actually enjoys the discipline.

Thank you so much for the curation!

It can be very enjoyable to ride! I like being able to stop at one place for all of my needs. That only gotcha is that you need to know the prices and if they are high or low. Some items are well priced, while others may be gotten cheaper at another tack shop.

I suppose that is just like anything else. Thank you for stopping by.

Wow, that's a lot of amazing stuff. For any horse lover, surely this place is heaven. It's my first time hearing the word "Saddlery" and knowing there is such a place. I don't hear much about it here nearby, that's why it's a bit of amazement to me to see this post. 😊

By the way, here's what I have to share for this week's #MarketFriday https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@labanez/how-about-fresh-crab-for-lunch-supporting-local-seafood-vendor

It is just like a clothing store or department store for horses. :) Saddlery is an English word. I tried to look up the same meaning in Filipino, but, I couldn't find anything except for the word saddle. Another name would be Tack Shop as all of the pieces together are called taking up when you get the horse ready to ride.

Thank you for stopping by and for dropping your link!

I bet the air in there smells fantastic!

They carry a large selection of new and used saddles in both English and Western

Well I never; I thought a saddle was a saddle, I never realised there were different types, nor different reins, mind you having never been anywhere near a horse I forgive my lack of knowledge! I thought you just climbed on whacked its rump with a big stick and off you jolly well went

Tally Ho!!

Haha!! Well, @grindle I am sure you can! He will probably take you for a ride you will never forget! :)

I grew up surrounded by horse-riding people of different disciplines, but if I didn't, it wouldn't dawn on me either. LOL I am still thinking about this:

I thought you just climbed on whacked its rump with a big stick and off you jolly well went

If you see me giggling as I make my way around the blockchain, it is probably as I am still thinking about that.

Hello, this is my first time here. I will leave you my link but first I would like to comment on your post.
I like horses very much, in fact once, an ex gave me one and I was in love with him, but someone stole him, probably to slaughter him. I felt very sad. His name was muñeco. We lived on a farm and it was possible to have horses, cows, goats, pigs, rabbits, everything, and well, his family had a lot of money. One of the things I felt most was how difficult it was even to shoe the horses. Here there are no shops like the one you show. Well, here in Cuba there are none, it's horrible. If we can't find basic things most of the time, how can we think of a shop that sells those things for horses?
And well, I see that one is even second hand, you can even find the cheapest and newest things, practically unused.
Greetings, I really enjoyed looking at that shop and I noticed every detail.

This is my entry: https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@nanixxx/just-a-pineapple-and-a-bit-of-ginger

Putting shoes on a horse, or changing them is a learned trade. People go to school to learn it, although you can learn without it. My uncle shoes his own, but, I go to the Ferrier (herradora in Spanish)

I agree that it is difficult to do those things when you don't have the basic needs available. One of the horses does not wear shoes, so that is very fortunate!

The second-hand store is a blessing, and there are even trading places, where you can trade for other goods, with no money exchanged. That is the best.

Thank you for reading the post and dropping your link!

Very interesting your community, I loved reading the posts there. I don't get out much, I'm almost like an oyster since the Covid-19 started to wreak havoc, but I've been getting back into the swing of things and it will do me good to get out and do some shopping from time to time and share with you the beauty to be found around here. There are some impressive and very picturesque places.

Thank you very much for your time to answer my comment and I wish you a wonderful day.

Horses are really beautiful creatures. And I love seeing them with its toned body and shiny coat. We don't have that kind of store in our place. But now I already have an idea how expensive it is if you want to maintain a horse and ride on it.

You can maintain them for much cheaper, however, most of what I show is what is offered up if you want to spend up on your horse. You can get by on less.

Horses are beautiful, I must agree with you. The shiny coats are what I love too!!! But, I will say that it is definitely expensive.

Yes! It was that way in Connecticut too. Lots of horse stables and people wanting to take a ride, but, not buy the farm. I totally understand that as it takes a bit of money to make that dream happen.

You are really fortunate to have an uncle who is a horse trainer/breeder who has given you some new (and used) equipment.

Your post of today made me think of the guy my wife is working for... His son is also working in the company and his dad wants him to take over the company at some point. But the son's heart is not in his dad's business... he is living for his horses.

He is currently the South African Champion in his division for show jumping. He is also a horse breeder. And with his prize money from taking part in competitions and horse breeding, he is making good money.

Your post also reminded me how expensive things are in the horse industry. But the photos you shared with us are really impressive.

It feels as if I can smell it...just by looking at your photos!

Have a great weekend, @dswigle!

Oh, yes! I appreciate it so much. Especially as my kids love riding too. My son doesn't ride as much as the girls, but, even a little riding is expensive unless you are just joy riding and then, I use what I have. :)

There are people that are obsessed with dressage, that is my guess. The shows, the discipline, it is a world of its own. It is definitely the most difficult of the disciplines, both physically and mentally. It is like ballet on horseback, all about the movements and their graceful flow of them. Almost effortless it seems, going from one to the other. I understand the love of it, and the rewards can be huge!

Most dressage people by that level adore it and it is absolutely part of who they are. Look at Christopher Reeves (he played superman in motion pictures) and he had fame and fortune, but, his real love was dressage/hunter/jumper He was paralyzed from the neck down and needed help breathing with a mechanical ventilator.

Riding was a passion.

And I always thought it was expensive to feed a horse lol I never really figured out how much it would cost to tack up. Beautiful store though. I really like well made items and often spend time browsing and admiring things I would never use 😂 I got a little shopping in this week also.

Ha! That is only half of it, the new horseshoes, shots, vaccinations, and teeth floated. and the list goes on. Then there is the tack. Entry fees to competitions, I could go on and on...

But, I am the same. I peruse stores because of cool things, but feel no need to own them. :)

Shopping! Yes!

The smell of leather is pretty sweet, isn't it? :)

I had a friend down in the South of England who ran a stables, but poor health eventually made her give it up.

Scotland, ah well climate change is here. We had a cold week in December where it went to -8, that has the only week there has been any frost this winter.
Have a great weekend Denise and thank you for the HEL prize earlier in the week!

I thought what is she on about? English riding? How else can you ride horse other than getting on its back 🥴 🙂

So I googled it, and now it all makes sense. I guess English riding is so called because I see that how the female ride in period TV dramas. Learn something new every day

My bad! I really should have gone into it a little more thoroughly. Thank goodness for Google, although you should not have to use it.

English is a discipline or way of riding. It comes from Europe and my guess is that it was developed in England. I personally think of it as dressage, the most difficult of the disciplines, both physically and mentally. It is like ballet on horseback, all about the movements and their graceful flow of them. Almost effortless it seems, going from one to the other. Hunt is another discipline as is racing, which I actually didn't know until recently. I actually thought it was a discipline of its own.

I can imagine the numbers adding up, as having a horse is costly. Not just the Horse tack as you and your family call it, but also the food and vitamins etc. Some even need to rent a stable, because of not having the space of keeping a horse.

You are exactly right!! The food is a huge expense, and If you need to rent a stable, it is very costly, depending on where you live.

I think you must really have the time, want and money to pursue competing with your horse.

True. I know someone who was interested in the sport but couldn't afford her own horse, so she trained on those of the manege (riding school). She eventually gave up.

Very interesting. This post reminded me that I never told you I finally settled on a place for my wife and I to visit for our Spring Break trip. After a lot of thought and consideration, I eventually settled on Louisville. We have drive through it several times, but never actually stopped in it. I got us a hotel right downtown and we are going to be heading there for four days at the end of March. I am pretty excited. I think we are really going to enjoy our time there.

You really did! How awesome! Brings to mind Slugger Bats and Kentucky Derby, although not until May! Home to Muhammed Ali Louisville is all about Ali!) and other fun things. It is close (about 90 minutes south) that I went to Mammoth Cave, but not sure if that is something you want to do on that trip.

I think it is a great choice! Downtown has lots of fun things happening! Always! You will definitely enjoy your stay!

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words.

Mammoth cave might be on the list. I went when I was a kid and it was really cool.

Bonus. I always read the directions on products, instead of investigating why it doesn't work as advertised

This is one thing I never do. I am just too quick to use a product without reading the directions. I hope I don't carry this bad habit into this new year again😂.

Awesome treatment for your horse(s). Although I know nothing about horses but I can proudly say that they are in the right hands. I have just discovered this community not long ago. I will also be participating in the market Friday challenge in the subsequent weeks.

I look forward to it. Please be sure to read the guidelines to help. @lifeof.abdul

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

1.Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. It can be a movie, an auction, or even a museum. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or product.
2.Take pictures! Be creative!
3.Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? A scroll of pictures with few words doesn't usually work.
4.Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess about some.
5.Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
6.PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
7.Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
8.You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.

Wow! I have never been to a store like this. Wow! your uncle is horse trainer/breeder?!!!! I've only read about it in Dick Francis novels. it's a whole world for me! Oh no, I don't want to use horse shampoo on my hair. 😁🙈 link to my post:

It is a wonderful world, the world of equines. The training is like learning ballet, precision, and beauty. Dick Francis has a lot of novels about horses! :) I have read many of them too. :)

I was lucky that my uncle was a trainer and breeder. Even now, the equipment he gives me is amazing, any of it that he gives me is less of an expense on my part. I used to help him when he showed his horses and for fun at his place, but, with my own life busy as it is, less.

Haha! You can use it~ I swear! People are horrified at that, so they relabeled it and also sell it as people shampoo. :)

Saddlery Liquidators a shop where every horse would enjoy 😀. I didn't know you have a horse. That is so cool! If I am correct you also used to fly back then. You have an adventurous life.

I have never been in a tack shop so I found it very interesting. 😊 Horses are such beautiful animals. I spent the previous few days in the Tara mountain and saw many beautiful horses there. I like to watch them, they give me some peace.

And here is my entry.

They are graceful when they are given enough space to run, aren't they? Or even grazing, peacefully. I am sure the Tara mountain is beautiful and I hope you took some pictures!

Wow, how interesting all this about horse care. I never thought it would take so much budget to keep these faithful friends. Very nice photos of you and your daughter, by the way. Horses are very majestic animals, I think they are elegant. I have respect for them because they are so big and they impress me. Thank you for teaching me a little about them.
Here is my participation on Friday.

It does take a lot of time and money to take care of your horse.I believe them to be very elegant when they are properly groomed and cared for.

Yes, it takes a lot of dedication. I still think it's a very nice action to love animals, it makes us better people. 🥰

I think if I were a horse I would be very happy to read this post. It's great to know where you can find all the necessities... I am not a horse and although I love horses, I have not been close to them and because of that they intimidate me. In my childhood world, in the country, horses were only used for work and never for recreation. This aspect that you show here is reserved for an aristocracy, the knowledgeable and the passionate.
I have had the opportunity to see your and your children's passion for horses and perhaps the proximity of these animals brings something special and hard to relate to in your life. I am glad for your passion and the fact that you can "consume" it.

I think I must wish you a pleasant holiday and assure you that your return is awaited with interest and joy.
PS I wrote something too, @dswigle, belatedly, also about a passion, now more of a memory...

Wow! Quite a place for sightseeing! So many accessories for riding a horse. Very complicated and laborious to get the horse all dressed up for outing!🙀😂

Actually, you can dress them in much less for much less money if you go to a second hand place or a place that trades equipment.

It doesn't have to cost a lot, but, I was giving an idea of how much is spent on a trained horse that is ridden for pleasure or competition.

Thank you for dropping your link! I hope all is going well with you!

Hi, it is my first time to learn about what a horse equipment shop looks like including the prices. Despite the fact that my country, Sabah, Malaysia, has horses, they are only used for horse racing and displayed at tourist attractions.

By the way, this is also my first time sharing a post for #MarketFriday. My entry as below.

I never realized that tack shops are not popular, but, then I forgot that pleasure riding is not a thing in many places.

Book shops and art shops used to be my favourite. Now my equine addiction has given me somewhere else to visit. Not that the bank exactly approves. But looking at your tack photos has been drooling. Oooooh, my girl Lollipop could do with that! and that....and maybe those..................

Oh, they still are mine! I have so many favorites! But, like you, I love strolling through, not really worried about the price as I am probably not buying. :)

There are so many this's and that's!
