May I have a Word or Will a Picture do?

avatar

black and white.jpg

Sometimes I need words to describe how I feel that day, most times not. This picture tells me nothing, perhaps it was meant to not. Letting you make your own presumptions, much like the black and white that it is, taking away the color to leave it standing on its own. What do you see? Forlorn? Romantic? Happy? Sad? Words can be used to describe feelings, and give emotion to pictures, just as pictures can be used to help make your words more credible. Then again, sometimes I get silly with my words and just leave them lying, but nobody does it quite like Shel Silverstein.

Center Crest.png

I opened my eyes And looked up at the rain, And it dripped in my head And flowed into my brain, And all that I hear as I lie in my bed Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head. I step very softly, I walk very slow, I can't do a handstand-- I might overflow, So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said-- I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head. - Shel Silverstein

PS... it's raining today!!

raining on the dogwood cropped.png

Black and white lets you see the fine edges and the blurry ones. I wanted to see if it would change how I feel about the dogwood. I like the muted coloration of the dogwood, but honestly, taking the color away faded the background and let the flower be more pronounced.

Today is #MonochromeMonday!! Want to take part? I am running rather late, never a very pretty trait, not even worth the debate. I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!

This is one of those shots that I knew would make a great black and white. Black and white force you to see what is really there, without being distracted from the beauty of the color. Hydrangeas make great images, and I am fond of them in black and white. Life is not that simple. Amazing how as we age there seems to be less that is black and white. I am currently running on shades of grey.

Color is everything, black and white is more ― Dominic Rouse

Hydrangeas are beautiful in color. I guess you can say that you can almost never go wrong with them.

While we all may agree that flowers can be pretty, sometimes close-ups and composition accentuate their detail and vibrancy. You can make words resonate with the pictures and some days, it can serve as a reminder to live each day to the fullest. Sunshine and friends....the blessings in our lives.

My mother loved this picture, I was not sure why until she said: "It's so funny how a single image brings the lyrics of an entire 1967 song to mind. I'm officially old."

Friends are the sunshine of life - John Hays

Yellow and red floral.jpg

All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.

It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.

Look to the sky! We got some of that today, It was a little bit of rain, a little thunder, trying to hang on but finally letting go! Thank you for stopping by and reading my post. I hope that you have a great rest of your week. And just like that, this post is over, come back tomorrow and we will do it again.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Shakespeare

The various emotions contained in the picture, which of course have the character of happiness, especially those that look like flowers, are the most natural sign of natural decoration in my opinion.
The perfect shot of you.🥰🥰

A photo is a story. It tells about the existence of objects in it.
Sometimes, the limited ability of the audience who is not able to read the implied message it contains.
Writing about photos is needed to fill the void of limitations that the audience has.

You always produce good and worthy photos, Mrs @dswigle

That is true, I think you are right in that sometimes people are not able to read the implied meaning. I do write on each photo I post, without fail, but, that is not a common thing I can see. I see 10 photos, then a few words sometimes.

I guess everyone has their own way of doing it.

Thank you so much for your words. Have a great day!

Superb take on monochrome Monday. So much beauty. Hard to pick a favorite but that pasture shot says something quite moody and fine. Love it:)

Hi, @prydefoltz !! Thank you so much for your kind words. Because it is a close-up, you cannot see that the pasture in the first shot is actually flowers. The beauty of closeup. It can say different things. Below, in color. One of my favorites in my garden. I am always snapping pics of it! airy and floaty looking to me. Best buy for a perennial! The beauty in all colors, all summer long until frost.

A picture always has a thousand words attributed to itself and the flowers to me will always be romantic as they carry this romantic aura because of their natural beauty and fragrance.

Nice shots ❤️, I love them black and white

I always think of them as romantic, well, for the most part, and words have no limit when it comes to them. I agree!

I do love them in black and white until I looked back and decided the color was pretty nice too. 💙 Lindheimer's Beeblossom (Gaura lindheimeri) is a perennial that is wispy and fragile looking. I don't know where you are from but, these grow so well for months and months. I love a flower like that!

Admittedly, I am still playing with what works with black and white. Some do and some don't. Flowers generally do.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words. I appreciate it! Have a wonderful day.

The color is nice too I agree.

Never knew the name. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Have a wonderful day.

You too ❤️

I downloaded the image and used it as my wallpaper. It looks so nice💙

the nostalgia, fragility, the feelings without any attention to the pushing colors dictating some vibe depending on the color - red, yellow, white, or some...
btw - the last image is amazingly symmetrical and stunning in terms of the details isolating with BW so perfectly 💚💚💚

Thank you so much, Victor. @victorbz That is a very good point about the emotional part being present despite not being dictated to. I actually never thought about it that way.

The colors can be attention-getters or get in the way of the details standing out or speaking for themselves.

That daisy was a lucky shot. Thank you!

Good night to you! I hope you had a great day!

Hello! I hope you are enjoying your rain. I'm feeling the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head too. 😄 It's been raining nonstop for three days here with intermittent drizzling that makes everywhere a mess but it's a blessing all the same! I wouldn't trade it for hot weather.

Don't we wish life is in black and white? Less complication in my opinion but there's something special and beautiful about colours.

Lovely pictures. Just popped in to say hello. I hope you are doing great. Have a good night. 😊 !LUV !LADY

Rain for three days!!! Oh! My rain is light and intermittent. It is all gone today! I would be floating away for three days.

Oh, yes! If life were only black and white, yes? Everything gets so complicated when it is not, worrying about all the what if and why for?

That was so nice to see you again! Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words~!!

Wow, your piece of art here is an embodiment of emotions. The fact that the flowers kind of tell the story is it for me. Also I love to see or edit pictures in monochrome, it shows more detail through its simplicity.

Such a beautiful words by Shel Silverstein Denise, truly loved it 🥰 thanks for introducing.

The flowers are stunning, and the photo does look better in black and white as the background fades away.

I think I have both… sometimes I let a picture do the talking and sometimes I write the words.
Feelings can be expressed in many ways.
It is also good to let the viewer interpreted an image. As for everybody it will be different. What makes it rather interesting.

Guess what it started raining here too yesterday. Nothing major, just a drizzle. But it will continue the whole week. It was sooo needed. Mother Nature will be happy.
The temperatures are down too. Max. 27 degrees this week. Such a relief… 😉😊

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful post @dswigle 😊 love the captures.
Beautiful! 🌺🌸🌼🌻🌹🌷

Oh, you should pull some books from Shel! He is mostly a children's writer (as you can see by this, but, I love his writing!)

Aren't those first flowers pretty? Well, I might have misspoken. I do like them in color. They are: Lindheimer's Beeblossom (Gaura lindheimeri) Look them up. They are a perennial and bloom here for probably 4-5 months.

IMG_9858.JPG

You would definitely want them in your forever house as they are light and floaty, whispy.

It is good to let everyone see what they want to see. It does make it more interesting, for sure.

Rain!!?? Everyone in the world is having rain! 27C Nice! (nicer, anyway) Thanks so much for stopping by! 💙

He is on my list to look into. Never heard of him before. But yes, different languages, different countries. Not all travels well.

Oh yes, stunning flowers. Also on my list now. Will look them up. I like whispy things… like fairy tales 😌 perfect especially when they are perennial. 4 to 5 months blooms, yep I like 🥰💃🏻🌸

Yes, I read a few other blogs too that said finally rain. It looks like it went around a bit. So great… a relief for many and nature 🥰
I know… much nicer than everything above 30 degrees.
I even had my hair down again. Hahaha 🤣 think I need to cut it a bit soon.

You are welcome Denise, anytime @dswigle 😊👋🏻☀️ Enjoy your evening!

Very nice shots! There is just something about flowers and macro photography that goes so well together. We got quite a bit of rain on Sunday this past weekend. More than we have probably gotten most of the summer.

You have had a dry summer, haven't you? We had sunny days and all our rain had been coming at night, so we didn't realize as much rain as there really was. We are fortunate to have enough, but, not too much.

Score!

Flowers do lend themselves to a nice macro shot, something I am practicing. (still) I can remember when I first started really getting interested in photography and I shudder over those pictures that I was so proud of. :) The one good thing (of many!) about Hive is that it helps you grow in your abilities.

The mono on the dogwood does really pop it from the background. I love to see how taking the color away changes the shot.

Of course we should live every day for all its worth. That seems to be the lesson of life. Not sure if there is a bigger point to it all, sadly.

Great shots and words as always 🙂

Hi Denise.

I absolutely love that Shel Silverstein poem, it is priceless! I have one that I have kept since childhood.

"I eat my peas with honey, I've done it all my life
It makes the peas taste funny, but it keeps them on my knife" Anon

I love collecting poems like these especially on days like today. I always find value in your posts because I have had a very serious day and not particularly pleasant, but that poem and your writing has made me feel so much better so for that I am very grateful. I know exactly what you mean by living in shades of grey. Sometimes I feel that every year that goes by I feel that it is more difficult because everything is in a wide open grey zone and there's far fewer absolutes.

I love monochrome photos, but I do so love the colour that flowers inject into our worlds. I need a day of flowers...badly. Hope you are well Denise. Just remember that yes, it may be raining now, but it can't rain all the time. We will have sunshine again soon.

I love that poem!!! I know it! :)

I do love collecting poems, especially like these. Somewhat silly, but, they make me smile. You write so beautifully, the words flow without fail. I sometimes am failed by words. The shades of grey... isn't that the truth. The absolutes are almost obsolete.

I get the color thing. I love color! I have come to appreciate monotones, but it will always be a living color for this girl! How can we have a black and white flower?

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words. You are always such a delight!

I love the silly poems the best too - and funny quotes as well. I knew someone many years ago who always used to remind me to never lose my sense of humour and not take life too seriously, he always used to remind me of the funny side of life and how much it can help.

Don't worry, I have days where words fail me horribly, but I try again the next day.

Flower were made so colourful for a reason and I love that about them, they are always smiling.

Have a great day today Denise, I hope it's much better weather for you. 💐

Oh!!! You did it again! ❤️

I saw the error, I just assumed it ran past you without you giving it permission to misrepresent.

You have a post I have been meaning to get back to, no matter how late I am. The one on grief. You even used the same picture I used when I wrote on grief long ago. It felt like that. Exactly. Letting the balloon go.

It touched me so very deeply and I won't feel right until I go back and comment. You have such a masterful way of expressing yourself. xo

Oh I don't know that I could really handle the grief comment right now. I was just organizing with the widower husband (and children) of the friend that died in June to meet up next month, with my other widowed friend who has identically aged kids. I've also been on the phone a lot with one of my oldest friends in Italy. She's just been diagnozed with the big C. I said to my husband I actually feel like I can't do this again so soon.....my heart is shattered

Ohhhhh ❤️ I am so very sorry. So very sorry. You are one of the kindest, most thoughtful, and loving people and you live by your heart, one of the reasons people turn to you. You ooze love from every pore. The fact that they call you when they get diagnosed tells me that you are loved, so very loved.

They seek your comfort and understanding. It is scary out there, not knowing what will happen next. It is not a fun place to be, but, if you were carefully selected, and you possess the love that will get them through.

I know your heart has got to be shattered, it would be. Your love for these people would not be so deep if it didn't matter so much. Remember, He will never give you more than you can bear. As a human being and mother, my heart goes out to you. You are in my prayers that He will give you the strength you need to be there. If it gets too unbearable, step back for a moment or three and just breathe.

As for your poor heart. ❤️ @buckaroobaby

Love to you.

I see sad.. Maybe it's because I am thinking about my little Pepper lately. I actually wrote about it on the anniversary of his passing, which I probably shouldn't have.. but it did help in someway or another. The photo reminded me of him for some weird reason and it appeared to me that the tiny, delicate flowers were lightly weeping. Definitely my mood coming through in my interpretation.

Anyhow... Lovely photos and write up as always! I will have to check this Silver Bloggers community out. It's just a shame I can't join, not being over 40 yet 😆 😂. hehehe.

Lovely... just lovely. I absolutely adore the picture of the Hydrangea in B&W. My Mom loved Hydrangea. We had them in all colours in the little rockery island that she created in our front garden. our bedrooms all looked onto it. I bought a couple of Hydrangea last summer for the area just outside my front door. Sadly one did not make it through the winter. The other looks exactly like your picture at the moment... I can't wait for it to bloom again 🤗💗
