The Humming of Bees and Lavender Tales

signal-2023-06-28-114625_003.jpeg

I take a pair of sheers and slide my hand down the stem of the lavender to where the stem meets the base of the plant. That is where I make the cut and separate the flower from the plant. Most farms will band them together in groups of ten or twenty. This particular farm does 20 stems. When I get home, I hang them upside down and dry them in a place that is well-ventilated.

Lavender doesn't make a lot of noise, or demand attention. It quietly waves in the breeze, the scent lingering behind. It is a delicate scent, barely there sometimes... Yet, it can be very effective in its workings, reducing anxiety, and pushing away that flight or fight response that our body has. It is subtle enough that you don't recognize it, but, people swear by it.

In between the purple French Lavender is a Lavender called Edelweiss or White Lavender. It is unique as the color is obviously not lavender color, but, planted for the beautiful color scheme that it shows off. I like the variation of the mix. Such a striking statement in the field of dreams. I was struck by the pink buds, which caught me off guard, then they pivot and emerge as white when they bloom.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

I am sure you didn't expect the Lavender Farm again in the summer, but, the truth is, that is basically where I have been, but I have a few places that I have on my schedule for the next few weeks. So many events going on for the 4th of July, which celebrates Independence Day for the US. There are usually events such as parades and picnics, firework displays, and family gatherings. I will probably watch as they launch fireworks from both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, I will see how the air quality holds up. We are still experiencing code red air quality here from the fires in Canada. If you celebrate the 4th of July, have you made plans for that day? Or we could just cut more lavender.

image.png

I haven't been to the Lavender Farm in ten days, maybe a day or so more than that. In that short time, it has sprung up and gained some proper height. It was nice to see it rise to the occasion. I was worried it wasn't going to get the growing season it deserved. After starting out strong, the spring sort of fizzled and was cooler (not a bad thing!) than normal, but, then we have been enduring the smoke from Canada. I can only imagine how bad it must have been up there!

image.png

See how big we have grown? It is supposed to do that and it is quite normal. But, I still find great joy in the ritual of gathering the lavender. It feels very therapeutic. I have lavender that I picked last year and dried it. It is just short of a year old and it still holds a strong scent. They say it will if stored and cared for properly. Who knew?

IMG_5110.JPG

The bees!! It is like walking through a hive (no pun intended) Okay maybe. :) Anyway, the entire field is humming with activity ~ I am sure there is a hive nearby, just taking advantage of the yummy lavender honey. They serve honey lemonade there also. Today, they gave us lavender honey cupcakes. They sell them also, so we bought some after they gave us one. They were delicious! At $3.95 each, I found that pricey, but, it felt good

There are bees all over, and honestly, the scent must make them high in some ways. They hunt and gather, without a care in the world, just basking in the glory of their fortune, living next to the lavender fields.

Wow! How nice to be in lavender farm! Take me there and I would spend the whole day there. That’s one of my dreams! To grow rows of lavender in my garden! Perhaps, one day I will have those seeds and ready to plant then in two or three rows!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Hope you’ve nicely recovered from last week. It’s time to slowly appreciate this beautiful surroundings once more.

The Lavender Farm was really nice! I think you could get one lavender plant and put it in your garden. That would certainly be enough for just you. The seeds do not work as well as the plants do, I am not sure what they do, but, they always advise to use the plants.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words! I am feeling good and the weekend is almost here! I hope you enjoy yours too!

Some friend gave me lavender seeds but I forgot where I placed them. It’s very difficult to find a plant. I should try any way.

Would be nice to have a lavender farm in my country.

If all you have are seeds, I would say to try the seeds and see how they work. You already have them, so you have nothing to lose, right? Good luck with it! I hope you find them!

French Lavender is one of my favorites! This is its favorite season over here, harvest time! I know that you are top-notch when it comes to clicking a few of them in various states, so I really look forward to it.

I am drying and giving all sorts of attention to it today, and yes! Lavender is always good.

We have a lavender farm here in the Barossa Valley, my home region. It's shite. So disappointing. Yours looks amazing though, and I'm jealous. I hope you like my little lavender post tomorrow, I enjoyed taking the snaps and I think they came out ok.

Happy #MarketFriday to you too...mine is ending though, bed time soon...but the doctor first thing in the morning then the range where I shall shoot some shit up! Lol. Should be a good day...cold and bloody raining though.

This is a small Lavender Farm and although it is nice enough to meet my needs, there are bigger and better an hour away. This one is close enough to make it look good. :) I am pretty sure your post will be good, as you put the time and energy into your posts, you always make them worthy. It is time well spent reading your words and perusing your photography.

The world is still spinning and my day will eventually end. Good luck at the doctor's and I am glad he is all over it. Knowledge is power. Information is liberating.

Shoot until you can't.

There is always room for you! Hihi! My house smells heavenly. After a dozen trips to the Lavender fields, I do believe I have enough to keep me in a state of bliss for the rest of the year. Next year too. :) It does have a tendency to last for a very long time with the proper care.

I planted a few, but, found that the endless supply in the farms was much better for me. I don't have the endless land that I have at the Shore House, but, I have the supply. So, for now, I have my two plants and pick from the fields.

The cupcakes are divine! I hope to make more, later today. The others are gone, gone, gone. I am really all better, Jackie. The only thing missing is 2% of my energy.

Oh, yay!! I look forward to the flight over to see the hubby! I have to say that I look forward to that and the trip back home. Another adventure, for sure! 💚

I've always liked lavender, didn't know there were farms that you could visit like this to harvest from. Having kids scissors in their own basket is a very sweet touch 😊

There are over large farms within hours of my house. I had no idea when I moved here. Weren't they all in France? No, seriously. I found them when I found the tulip farm. Again, who knew? When you look in your area, you may be surprised at what they have.

It has been a lovely surprise and it is so close to me, I am able to take advantage of it. I have a yearly pass that was very affordable and can come and go all season for one price. You make up the extra you pay for the pass in two visits. Deal!

They have a kiddie area with games, an animal farm and a playhouse. It is such a fun place to go.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words!

Thank you! Lavender is intoxicating when I am surrounded by it. They have a little cottage on the farm and they sell their lavender products there... I cannot even begin to tell you how heady it is to walk in there to look around. (You also check in at the cottage, so you will always pass through each time) I was blown away by the sense of calm that overcomes you.

I bet you did in France! I went to see the lavender fields there, but, it wasn't until I got back home that I heard the term farm. Anyway, there is one on Cape Cod, but, it is the only one I know of. Who knows if it is still there.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words.

Oh Honey, what a beautiful farm, lavender fields forever to soothe ones soul.

Another wonderful walk collecting for drying, ever lasting with perfume to please. If a standard glass filled with honey to take home at the price you mention, it is not expensive on our conversion as to what we pay here.

Honey so beneficial, we really have to thank the bees for all the work and effort, enjoy sipping some tea and honey with lovely flavour over the weekend, smile and think about the farm, all the pleasure it brought forth.

Oh, I have to agree! Lavender fields, forever! Hihi Jaon! @joanstewart

The soothing effects go far in making one feel good. They have a beehive on the property and I have to wonder if they are making lavender honey with it? I can only imagine how that would taste and the medicinal aspect of that? I have never had any/heard of any, but, I would be willing to try it! :)

I do thank those bees, especially for their work on the farm! The whole field is abuzz when you arrive. They are so docile as they drift from bud to bud... I could pet the bumblebees and they didn't mind. I think they might be on to something. :)

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words.

Thanks! I appreciate that, the overcast sky and the heavy air from the smoke really made it kind of difficult to get any good shots. So, I appreciate that you liked them. I do love the bees on the blooms. Seems like they are drunk on the scent. :) I can see why!

The place is definitely relaxed and the vibe is mellow to the max. The people or presence of lavender, your guess is as good as mine. But, I am looking forward to going back again at the crack of morning tomorrow.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to seeing what you have this week!

Nice!! I have two plants that were from two years ago and my daughter put two more in my cart at the nursery, so now four. I am now faithfully addicted to all things Lavender - especially the small cottage on the farm. It has this scent that pulls you in. It definitely is a calming scent and let me say, something that is wafting through this room, as I have bundles and bundles of it drying. I have been almost nodding off... truly. Sounds strange, even to me.

I got a cold call today from someone who wants to buy the Shore House. This is the 5th person this month that has wanted to put an offer in on it. Sounded really strange, but, the person was really adamant about a bona fide offer. I did notice that a lot of the properties are jumping up in price over there. People have finally discovered the Eastern Shore.

Hello? It is not for sale.

Anyway, another day... tomorrow is another one. I hope all is going well in your world.

I have really come to love Lavender! I have always loved how it blooms in fields, but, the medicinal properties and overall experience of it has drawn me closer.

I am told that a Lavender plant has a lifespan of about 7 years or so- give or take, so perhaps yours is ready for the old age home? :)) Throw marigolds in at the beginning of the season and call it macaroni!

Lavender is such a lovely scent. In ancient times, lavender was used as a holy herb. Years ago, before washing clothes was such a common chore, it was used to freshen up and most likely give a light scent to clothes and hair. Even now, I put a few drops on the shower floor and enjoy the lovely scent as the warm steam from the shower allows the scent to wander through the house.

You can always buy essential oils or try them to see if you get the same peaceful scent.

I hope all is well with you and you have had a great week!

I gather that going to the Lavender Farm means that you have recovered by now, I sure hope so!
Lavender is a wonderful herb, I like it too :)

I can only imagine how bad it must have been up there!

I was reading the other day that the smoke from Canada has reached over Crete, half the world away! It is not perceivable from the ground but they published a satellite view that leaves no doubt about it. Crazy!

I am feeling better, I actually stayed away while recovering. For some reason, the computer didn't tempt me at all. :) What a poor Hiver, yes?

I think the lavender helped keep me calm and mellow while homebound. I have to agree about it used as a herb, it is! I made lavender cupcakes and my girls are making lavender honey ice cream. We will see how that turns out.

The smoke is a little less today, at least it is not hazardous like it has been for days. I had no idea that they can see it there, even if by satellite, which has traveled around the globe! Wow! Now, I really feel bad for the Canadians! Even worse than that if it is possible.

It is totally crazy!

Thanks so much for stopping by and yes!!! I do feel better. Thanks for inquiring!

Oh, I love lavender! It's good to see another post about it. You can never write too many posts about lavender fields and honeybees! I love those fuzzy mounds of purple!

Lavender doesn't make a lot of noise, or demand attention. It quietly waves in the breeze, the scent lingering behind.

You are much more poetic!

I just looked and there are several lavender farms I could visit in the Midwest, including in neighboring states Wisconsin and Iowa, but none in Minnesota! Alas, someone must start one. I'm going to come back in the next life as a lavender farmer. Or I might just grow milkweed and raise monarchs. So many choices!

Thank you as always for hosting Market Friday and inspiring us all, @dswigle! Here is my post: https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@jayna/market-friday-dinner-and-a-play-at-the-guthrie-in-minneapolis.

I agree!! I love the sense of calm that washes over me. And the bees! The entire field was abuzz!!

You are so sweet. Not so poetic, just pulling from the heart. I just looked and I think I found a Lavender Farm, 33 minutes south of Minneapolis! It is called the Lavender Barnyard, 6401 225th St W Farmington, MN 55024 Check it out here and here You are behind in weather, so I believe the timing is perfect, but, we all lead such busy lives, we are scheduled up the wazoo. No lie!

Oh, a lavender farmer sounds so wonderful, doesn't it? Or milkweed! Yes to the monarchs, the choices are endless.

Thank you for always making such a positive contribution to #MarketFriday!!! !LUV to you!

Woe is me. I am actually allergic to lavender. I wonder if the edelweiss lavender wold be different. That said ... I love wine from Provence, which has hints of lavender in its palette.

Smoke from Canada you say ... I wonder if I should suggest the governments simply put them out. We spend so much on fighting wars overseas ... perhaps a few water-bombers at home might be in order. In addition to some planned burns ... fire is a natural part of the renewal of an ecosystem after all. Don't get me started on the narrative pushers when we could be talking about French wine instead. Love you, Denise.

That is such a rare allergy! I am not sure about the Edelweiss, but, I am going to guess it has the same properties. Oh, yes, please. Wine from Provence? I would love some.

You know, my relatives are out in California. Lived there their entire life. Growing up, they had fires now and then. Now, every year, they have massive burns, to the point, they had to buy an RV in case the fire takes their house... they need an escape route, a place to live for a while... and perhaps for longer than a while. We never used to have this problem, but, nature was allowed to run its course, small fires burned and went out themselves. We didn't let everything dry up and blow away, waiting for the next tossed cigarette as a plan.

Provence! I like the idea of doing all things Provence-ial for a bit. Let's just do it! !LUV you, Pryde!

Thank you for dropping the link! It is much appreciated.

The weather looked like rain earlier, but, now that a couple of hours have passed, the sky is lighting up. The air quality today is good to excellent, and tomorrow is expected the same. Sounds good to me,

A healthy day ahead! I hope the same for you!

I also find the color of the lavender lovely to look at. It was hard to take pictures with the sheers in one hand, the basket in the other. LOL But I managed a couple.

Thank you so much for stopping by and dropping your link!

I haven't visited a lavender farm. Something to add to the list! But, there are lavenders all over, and just a hint of lavender smells here and there. Were there lots of bees? I buy lavender honey! But I still miss the "taste" of lavender, if you know what I mean.
I love #marketfriday @dswigle !!!
And, !LUV you.
