What is a Schooner?

It's not secret that I am sailing the Atalntic Ocean, although I have made it to the Caribbean yesterday. The sun's warmth gently caressed my entire body. I have no words to describe just how beautiful that felt, but, I embrace it fully. Come along as I share a few days with you, mostly as they happen. Go upstairs and get your life jacket, then head out to the deck to get your drill. Safety first. We all need to know how to do a muster drill. I alway want to know how to do one. I do know how to do one, but, I don't know that station, so that is why it is important to go through it. They do an organized drill, and take roll call to make sure everyone has been educated.

According to the Royal Caribbean Muster Drill pamphalet nanded out: A muster drill is a mandatory safety exercise with the objective to familiarize all guests and crew with the location (muster station) where they are to assemble in the unlikely event of an emergency. During this drill, additional safety information (i.e., how to don a life jacket) is presented. Aploogies! I couldn't find the picture of the drill, but hopefully will before I end the cruise.

Look at that ocean right now. That is when I left home. The waves looked cold, not at all pretty like the Caribbean Blue. Below is one of the lounges/bar on the ship called the Schooner Bar. Every ship in the fleet of Royal Caribbean has a Schooner Bar, almost like a signature watering hole. They all look alike and so it is a comforting place to walk into. Okay, I have never called a bar comforting, but, their bars are multi-use places. In the morning or afternoon, they play a trivia game. Not so lame! It can be fun, especially if you have good partners or a nice bottle of wine. I thought it was old people stuff, but, you know what? It is a relaxing, fun way to meet new people and I even won a Royal Caribbean hat. Shhhh! Everyone covets the hat.

What is a schooner? I wanted to see if the dictionary had a better explanation of it than my boat with sails. It did, thankfully and here is how they call it: A vessel with two or more masts, with the foremast shorter than the mainmast. (The foremast was the mast furthest forward towards the bow on a ship) A schooner usually has fore-and-aft rigged sails, but may also have square-rigged sails. The typical schooner has only two masts, but can have up to seven. source

Canadians call really large beer glasses a schooner. However, if you are in a South Australian pub, the term schooner is referencing a glass that holds 285 ml. A mite bit small compared to Canada. Good things come in small packages, so I have heard.

It's Wednesday! We are walking! As always, I want to thank @Tattoodjay for hosting the #WednesdayWalk challenge! It is a challenge that allows you to share what you see as you walk through your day. Show me where you walked today, I want to see what you got to see and hear what you have to say. If you want to do the challenge, drop him a link on his #WednesdayWalk post, so he can try to visit yours! Whatever your day looks like, it is worth a walk-through. You can't always have sunshine and rainbows, but, you can always have a #WednesdayWalk! So cast your hooks out to reel in some sunshine and happiness! To be fair, I had already walked around the ship by this time, so I walked throught the bar and over into the Spotlight lounge too. Thanks so much for coming along! No drinking and walking!

She is a pretty little deal, isn't she? They have decorated the bar with the usual nautical motifs, which is unremarkable, yet, it would feel funny without it. The Schooner bar is used for many purposes, but the one I like best is when the piano man comes to play. He is practicing below for later tonight, but, it is nice to listen to him warm up the ivories. Life goes on around him and he responds with some popular music and then a bit of his own. I close my eyes and just take in the range of harmonics, mostly a mello sound that goes well with the atmosphere.

The little cozy corners and cafes, bistros and just places to sit and take in the beauty of life, right outside the windows or off the deck. They rythmic sound of the waves may just soften your breathing, letting you relax into another state.

20230117_130344 schooner into spotlight.jpg

Or right there, with them still imposing all their nautical paraphernalia
on you. Don't get me wrong, I love all things to do with the ocean and water and sailing, fishing and boating. So I joke about overdoing the theme. As if that could happen. :)

The people? I love the people that work there. It takes a special person to be able to work the long hours and days on end. Do they get a break? Of course. But they never get to leave their place of work and remove themselves from the whole scene. Most work on contracts, usually 7 months of a little more or less. They come from all over the world, enhancing your already amazing cultural adventure.

Thanks so much for coming along, singing my song. So far, it has been a great trip and tomorrow, an wonderful little island! Have a great night! ❤️

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost

I looked it up and of course, you are right, but, I also got some info that perhaps I am misreading.

The term “schooner” is fairly consistently used across Australia for a 425mL beer, but in Adelaide asking for a “schooner” will get you what's considered a pot or middy elsewhere (285mL). source

I should correct the post, but, what the heck. if all of the world jumps on it. :)

Lol...Yeah, it would be decidedly un-Australian to only drink 285ml of beer. 🤣

:) Good grief! I thought the way it was written, mL it was something bigger. I stand totally corrected!

Why did they write that?

Glad to know you are enjoying your life. Walking in the sea has its own fun. Such movement is very useful and necessary for human health. It makes one feel very relaxed. Sitting at the bar and drinking juice with friends is its own fun. Thanks for sharing your happiness with us.

It’s a Sailboat ⛵️ 😃

Excuse the profanity but I just couldn’t resist 😂. This scene came to mind as soon as I read the title! I loved this movie in high school 😂

Good for you. Enjoy the time on the schooner (sailing vessel). A simple little sailboat is still a dream for me. I am on the edge of becoming homeless (again), so I am still in poverty. I do everything I can to get out of poverty in this decade.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

I am sorry to hear that. I hope something turns up for you and your brother. A sailboat would be challenging. Hopefully, something else comes up.

LOL at @galenkp's comment that was what I was thinking of as well, must be a down under thing, but of course i also know the ship form a schooner Sailing ships with there cool masts

but first i am envious of you feeling the warm sign in the Caribbean on a cool morning here, but hey enjoy it for the rest of us :)

Love the style of that bar it looks so cool

Thanks for joining the Wednesday, its always fun for me to visit the walks from all around the world, getting a feel for communities where people live and what they see on their daily walks

I know!!! Can you believe I wrote that?? I cannot! I really love a ship that is a schooner. they are pretty darn cool looking.

All of the ships in the fleet have their signature Schooner Bar. They are all very much alike, so you can go on any ship and feel at home there. I think that is why they are so popular.

I did have a great Walk and I love walking through other people's posts, and enjoying their views!

Thanks so much for hosting the challenge!

Schooner baby!

I love the blue seeas far more than the iron grey cold ones. That ship/boat looks really cool in a quaint almost antiquated way!

What the heck? Many of my responses were wiped clean! :( Yours included.

I do love the blue seas too! The sea above was when I was leaving the chilly port but it didn't last but the blink of an eye. We are now in heaven the Caribbean and sucking up the sun and shine.

Every ship in their fleet has a Schooner Bar, a most popular place after the sun goes down.

I have saw the same thing with comments recently. It seems to be more with peakd than anything else, they just don't get posted!!!

I can imagine it being a popular place!! Good on you, I hope you are living it large!! :0)

Looks like a really cool place to hang out to me. So is your muster station based on your name or on your location. Like if you are on the far end of the ship and you have to muster do you just go to the nearest one or do you have to go all the way across the ship to your appointed one?

0

avatar

Boo! What the heck? Many of my responses were wiped clean! :( Yours included. Not sure what happened.

You should go back to your room and get your life preserver, then go to your assigned muster station. They familiarize you with a drill so there is no confusion. They make it simple.

Of course, they have extra preservers for those who don't get theirs from their rooms. They account for panic, but, the entire crew is involved and they do a good job of quelling the panic.

Even the older people can scoot across the ships pretty fast! :)

I have never been in a real-life situation, so I cannot say what things would change, but, I have been on drills.

Beautiful little ship model. I'd feel at my imaginary home there.
The Bluenose is a Canadian Schooner that won the International Fisherman's cup in 1921 against the American schooner Elsie which started a long rivalry between the two sides. The Bluenose is immortalized on the Canadian 10 cents.

Anyway, Hello, woman! Is that why we are so competitive? :)

Who knew? Thanks for that! I had no idea!

It's the competitive nature of the fishermen.
They need something to brag about besides the $5000 prize.
This October will be the 100th year since Bluenose's race against the Columbia.

First of all I'm green with envy. I would love a Wednesday walk on the sea. I am happy for you that you're doing it though.

I have lived all but 4 years of my life in Canada and never heard of the Schooner sized beer. I feel almost ashamed and I have had a good load of beer over the years.

What I wouldn't give to unwind with wine and trivia. Oh yeah sign me up for that!!!!

Isn't there just something so relaxing or revitalizing about the sea? I always say, "The Sea is Calling."

Thank you! I didn't know either! I got taken down a peg for my lack of knowledge. LOL I will know next time. Thank goodness for Hive, yes? We learn all sorts of things we never knew we needed to know!

It sounds silly, but, it is a very enjoyable evening spent with wine and Trivia. They are a million little things to do with your time, but, I am low-key and easy most days. :)

Hi, Carolyn! @carolynstahl It would be fun to have you here. They had a culinary class and seminar today. It was fun. I am always interested in something new.

How awesome you always make me feel, just reading your comments. ❤️ It is wonderfully warm today, right at 82 and sunshiney. I love the winter, but, this was a spur of the moment and is the best!

I take a few moments and check-in, but, mostly at night when I should be sleeping... but, I love to burn the candle at both ends. My sister wanted to make me feel good, so she showed off her new snow. :)

I told her that was no way to make me jealous! It was already messy looking. I love that pure lovely drifting stuff. Thanks for the pizza!
