Underwater with Mirrors

avatar

I had this crazy idea. Something I had never seen before. I am a scuba diver and an underwater photographer. I love taking photos of nudibranchs, which are beautiful sea slugs. They have incredible colors and patterns all over their bodies. Very different than land slugs.

So to show them off in all of their glory I purchased a rectangular mirror at the local hardware store. I took it with me on a few dives to see what the outcome would be, and I was amazed. I was able to see so much more of the nudibranchs. Plus it gave the photo of real artistic touch, without doing anything in post processing.

This is the first time I'm debuting these photos. I will try some more if the response is positive.

These were taken in my backyard in Oahu, Hawaii, at a dive site called electric beach. It is called that because a huge electrical plant is located across the street. There are two massive hot water outflows located about 30ft down underwater. These nudibranchs seem to like the warmer water that surround these pipes. Divers do have to watch out though, if you get in front of the pipes the water will blast you away and up to the surface....a little too fast.
