Rice with Chicken and Vegetables (but it's not paella)

avatar

Hello foodies and friends!

We say "arroz con pollo y verduras". Who does not know this popular dish? Popular in many different countries, both in Spain and in Hispanic America, in each place with its variant and its own version, right?

Around here we also eat rice but perhaps not always in the same way, and in the land of the Valencian paella (greetings from Valencia!) it seems that we only always want to eat paella. But it is not like that, there are many different recipes, one day I already shared with you a baked rice recipe here: Comfort Food: Oven Baked Rice!, one of my favorites, and there are many more.

But on normal days in a hurry there is not enough time to make a paella properly, with the right instrument, that large flat frying pan that some call a paellera but is actually called a paella, too, and if it is done outdoors, almost better. We flee from tourist restaurants where all is cooked not really well and they are really expensive.

And when there is no time we also eat the quick and easy version, but it is also very good. It would be a “rice with things” ("arroz con cosas") as we usually say to everything that is not paella, I know it's something radical, but that's how people are around here with that topic. Today we eat then:

Rice with chicken and vegetables

Perhaps my version is the Valencian one, due to the clear local "paella" influence... and each one can do it in a thousand ways. Because gastronomy tells us a lot about where we are, what there is, traditions and culture.

And the recipe really has no secret, a well-done sauce with virgin olive oil, tomato, onion, garlic and sea salt. To add the vegetables, which ones to put? Well, whatever you want or have, but I wouldn't forget the green beans and something unusual that reminds us of paella, the “garrofón” (it's that wide, flat white bean).

Where to find it? I don't know, it depends on where you are, here they simply sell it in the supermarket, in some frozen bags that say "paella arrangement" with all the vegetables that are added already prepared.

In this case, as this is another dish and I bought artichokes at the market, I also add some chopped ones.

Then the usual, the chopped chicken of course, water, saffron to give it a nice yellow golden color (you don't need that chemical dye) and then the rice. Just cook and wait. Then blow and let's eat!

A version for every day for those who like this combination (rice and chicken) so good, tasty and popular. And how do you prepare the "arroz con pollo"?

Thanks for reading! Have a tasty and good day.

Who doesn't love a classic combo of rice, chicken and veggies, eh? Delicious indeed. 🔥

Well, it looks delicious. And it looks a lot like paella. Instead of fish you use vegetables. Which is great for variation.
My favorite Spanish food is simply just bread with chorizo. Specifically chorizo pamplonese. Fresh French bread with chorizo pamplonese. Spanish people would drink wine with it. I don't like wine. I prefer to have rum and cola with my supper, with my lunch, and with my breakfast.
And I call it pamplonese, but in my atlas, Pamplona is called Iruñea. I just don't know how to use that name as an adjective. "Chorizo Iruñese"? Iruñease? I don't speak a word of the Basque language.

Oi! In Basque it's Iruñeko txorizoa... Never mind Basque. I'll just call it chorizo iruñeko.
Txorizoa... Chorizoa... Somehow it does make sense. Txorizoa iruñeko.

Jajjaa yes chorizo pamplonés (Pamplona is the capital of Navarra, a different region also in the north) is good and my favorite chorizo! I don't know anything about basque language it sounds like an African village language. Just thanks (eskerrik asko) I think 🤔
About the rice in Valencia we never would say this is paella 🥘 we are very radical, always the classic and although internationally people think in fish that's not the original one but the "paella marinera" not alenciana. Details that we are discussing always with not Valencian people 😅😅😅

I may be wrong about this, and it may be a sensitive subject, but I tend to see Navarra as eastern Basque country. The Basque border runs straight along the Gave d'Oloron river, along the border fortress town of Navarrenx. So, that's where the border used to be once. The Basque border in France still is there, virtually.
I once had some very good paella in Navarrenx. The butcher was cooking it publically, while the customers were waiting to buy some portions. As fresh as it could be, it was really delicious.
Valencia is a beautiful city. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but we were on our way, I think we were running short on time. We did take a good walk there, but we didn't see a lot of it.
Anyway, of course I respect the local customs. It's not paella, it's arroz con pollo y verduras. Rice with chicken and vegetables. I prefer to smoke my vegetables though. 😁
The structure of the chorizo pamplonés is so much better than regular chorizo. Much more refined. 🙂

Well yes it's also a political issue there, some people of Navarra consider themselves as basques too, language and so on... but I think not everyone. Uff too much divisions always but what it is true that the Reino (Reign/Kingdom) of Navarra is historical very old, the base of the country (Spain) as legitimate dynasties of kings come from there. Basque country is somehow a quite modern "invention".
The Reign of Valencia was also important more than the Catalan "condados/counties" but people don't want to remind history if that doesn't help their political interest to divide population. Hope you can visit the city one day, we all are in a hurry during trips and we miss things...
I agree about the chorizo the best one and yes, refined is a good word.

I see I should learn more about it. I said Navarra, and I know what I meant, but I was thinking of Aragón when I pictured Navarra in my mind. Based on my memory, I had the shape of Aragón in mind when I thought of Navarra.
I once suggested that Voivodina is more Hungarian than Serbian, but that did not sit well with Serbians. They directed me right back into my place. My suggestion was based only on a map I saw in an old Dutch atlas.
So, I know I should be careful making such statements.
And I noticed, I need to learn more about it. This may be a good page to start with: https://www.mapofus.org/navarra-spain-maps/

It was in Behobia where I once saw a map of Basque Country on the wall in a pub. That was in 1990. It did include Navarra, but that does not mean the people of Navarra agree with that specific map.
And of course the people are divided about it.

History in general is a sensitive subject in Spain. The civil war still left some deep scars in a lot of people.

The bombing of refugees from Málaga on their way to Rincón de la Victoria, there are many such stories. Durango and Gernika. Well, at least I know that Durango was bombed just as bad as Guernica. But I do not know enough to make certain statements, such as Navarra being eastern Basque Country.

This was a present from Domingo, Mari, Francisco and Rafa. Domingo and Mari rented out rooms, so they could live in a nice house in a nice location, in Añoreta Golf. It was payed for by the renters, Francisco, Rafa and me. But it got too expensive to stay there. We had to move to a cheaper place, a kilometer uphill. My room was supposed to cost 400 per month, but I payed 320. It was 2009/2010: Crisis. I could not afford 400, otherwise I would gladly have payed it, just to stay there where we originally were living.

Don't worry we all make statements according to what we know, not easy sometimes when it comes to politics... Navarra and Aragon were later united because the kings were the same, I mean the daughter of the king (Trastámara family) of Navarra married to a son of a catalan king (Berenguer family), etc... maybe I have made a mistake as I'm not remembering well all that part.
Never liked that painting but civil war is still used to separate the society.

I think I like the painter better than this particular painting. But it sure is a monumental painting. There's a square, la Plaza de la Merced, in Málaga, in front of the house where he - Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso - was born, he sits on a bench, as a bronze statue. I did like to just sit next to him, dog on my lap, rolling a cigarette, drinking from a ½-liter bottle.
I found a good picture online.
The photographs with me sitting next to him probably are on an old hard drive. I need to find the power supply of the old laptop to perhaps be able to copy those.

Credits for his full name are for Wikipedia. They made it easy for me to copy and paste it.

I know, [they] would love to see a world wide civil war. It would make the weapons manufacturers soooo happy.
Mr. Gates must also be really content with his actions of the past three years. "We just shoot it straight into their veins", the veins of little children. Different subject please. Sorry for this nasty paragraph.

Something cheerful to wrap it up ...
Movie, Tanna (2015). Kids are playing in the pool. Girl takes one of the boys' clothes. Kid screams: "She stole my penis sheath!" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4239726/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1

Have a wonderful evening...
Muy buenas noches! Y gracias, for the nice conversation. 😀

Ohh so many data in one comment!!! Obviously Picasso (and his long name that I didn't know) lived in Malaga, a city where you could find many museums and culture but not my prefer painter for sure, as 'm from Valencia I prefer Joaquín Sorolla. 😍
Totally true and totally agree with that you wrote about the old "Windows software seller", our friend is always focus on what could be "better" for all of us... or for him? 😉
Anyway, a weird/funny movie? jaja thanks for the recommendation!!!
A pleasure once again! Good online conversation with different topics and interesting info always!!! 🤗

I can see why you like Joaquín Sorolla. I like the realism, much better than cubism.

I did not know him yet. I'm not exactly an expert in arts. But when I was on a vacation in Lanzarote, I found some pretty interesting artwork there. César Manrique built a house even, dug out in the lava shafts. He lived there, not all the time, but he did live there now and then. It is now a museum, still decorated as it was when he lived there. He also made paintings, but I find those less interesting. He made art all over Lanzarote. I think his art is the main reason why tourists specifically go there.

There are some natural attractions on Lanzarote also decorated by Manrique.
For that matter, Hundertwasser made some nice art also. And Gaudi. I really like that kind of art.
There is a Hundertwasser Haus (House) in Vienna.
I'm gonna watch some of those Sorilla pictures. From a distance, it looks pretty good. I bet it is detailed too.

Buenos Días by the way.
I was just about to go to sleep.
I got a weird rhythm. No rhythm actually. It's a volatile rhythm. Constantly changing.

So, have a nice day! 😌

So then sleep well, I knew about that garden house of César Manrique but never went, maybe someday... Sorolla caught the Mediterranean essence, and now flow with your or rhythm and greetings from here!

And Domingo could not afford to not let the room for ... he offered 350. I was just being honest: I can't afford that amount. 320 was a lot for me to pay, living on Dutch social welfare, paying double rent to keep the welfare, but being sponsored by my mother for 100 per month. She's such a good woman.
She brought me there, and she came to pick me up nine months later. With my PC and everything I needed in the camper she built herself.
Two years later again, in the center of Málaga, in an apartment, 300 per month, for nine months. Ma brought me there with my stuff, and picked me up when it got too hot.
She is such a good woman...

Simple and delicious! I love this kind of food. I would like to try the artichokes. I only ate them in my childhood and I don't remember the taste. 😊

Exactly, that's the point! No time for preparing a huge paella jaja that for special days better.
And artichokes here are common, I eat them frequently in omelette instead of potatoes, love them. They are somehow weird but it depends how you to prepare them, and with rice is also a good idea. 🤗🤗

Your rice seems very good and tasty I think I rather this than paella 😊.
I liked also that you used artichokes they leave a very good taste in rice.

Thanks for share

Thanks, happy you like it! Yeah paella is popular and good but not my favorite there are others... and just common dishes like this one are also delicious and we can add what we have like those artichokes because here some local recipes add this vegetable to some rice dishes too. Happy day!!

Mmmm seeing this makes me now officially hungry (nearing noontime where I am right now). We love fried rice (as we call it), adding many varieties of ingredients to leftover rice and somehow come up with a new dish. This one's good. I'd love to try and come up with my version. Hope that happens soon. Happy midweek!

PS. thanks for the inspiration here.

Your version looks and sounds delicious indeed! Rice is so versatile that it can be made thousands of different ways! In Costa Rica, where I used to live, the most common and traditional dish is Gallo Pinto, or rice and beans (usually black). Thank you for sharing your yummy creation! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
