Broken

avatar

I am broken, the last of my tribe left me. The only village I know since childhood has been ruined, what is left is a carcass of things that once had life in them.

"Come let's go" Maddie's voice echoed from afar. I wasn't going to leave, this land is my root, it would be a shame that I abandon my home to settle in another man's land. I wanted to speak but my heart was heavy. I watch Maddie's shadow fade away as she chooses a different path for herself.

The vultures flew around looking for other remains, the howling grew louder as they gathered in number. I picked my broken self, ready to start a new life, one of loneliness and survival.

On my knees I say a prayer, hoping not to lose myself trying to build an isolated land. It seemed as if the heavens were waiting for me to speak, roars of thunder answered and I knew it was my forefathers loudly proclaiming my bravery. Surge of strength sprouted within me, and I could feel the embrace of men before me. I was assured, I wasn't alone.

What I depict From The Image

I see a man on black who looks heartbroken. On the far end are people on the same dress walking away. The city around him looks ruined, an effect from war, disaster, or famine. One can tell it's a sad scene and his posture shows a broken state.

An interesting take on the picture prompt! Indeed the image spells desolation, like a land defeat and a few are on their feet trying to make things better. Let's hope this narrator can rebuild the place. He's courageous. Too bad Maddie did not stay back to help. A well-written short story. Well done!

With the answer to his prayers, I believe he wouldn't fail, not now that he feels a new strength

From what I read so far your entry impressed me most of all - a broken soul on it's way to get back on his feet. 🍀❤️

The ugly consequences of conflict. War does no one good. It leaves a sad memory that defies timely healing. In whatever situation, the most patriotic step is to join in the rebuilding. Maddie walked away from the problem which is not ideal. I love this story.

As always in life @dwixer, each individual must choose their own path. One can't go the route of another. There may be something down the road ahead meant only for that individual. The narrator knows in his heart that Maddie's path is not the one he wants to take. He's waiting for a sign that he's making the right choice staying and attempting to find his bearings and start a different life in another direction or stay where he is and start anew.

Thanks for sharing. Lovely interpretation of the prompt image. Nicely done.

That's so true, we all have a different path to take in life and everyone is allowed to walk that path.

Thanks so much for your lovely contribution
