Ultimately, the key is to respond with kindness and understanding, while offering whatever support you can provide, even if it's just a listening ear.

You have a point there, being soft spoken and empathetic with a person that needs help from us when we cannot help them out in their present predicament goes a long way to reduce their problem, just as the saying goes: a problem shared is a problem solved.
