Hace unas semanas antes del día primero del presente mes me llega un mensaje vía WhatsApp, en el mismo se me comunicaba que había sido escogido para ser parte del grupo de los 65 enfermeros que desfilarían, como ya es una costumbre cada año en lo primero del bloque de Salud Pública. Al principio no me sorprendió para nada esta noticia, puesto que cada año participo en estas actividades, desde las diferentes instituciones de salud a las que he pertenecido hasta el momento. Obviamente, siempre que ese día no me coincidieran con alguna postguardia, o no me encontrara ejerciendo en mi puesto de trabajo.

A few weeks ago before the first day of this month I received a message via WhatsApp, in which I was informed that I had been chosen to be part of the group of 65 nurses who would parade, as is customary every year in the first of the Public Health block. At first I was not at all surprised by this news, since every year I participate in these activities, from the different health institutions to which I have belonged so far. Obviously, as long as that day did not coincide with some postguard, or I was not practicing in my job.

Pero me dijeron que mi presencia allí entre este grupo escogido de enfermeras era por estímulo, algo que entraba un poco en conflicto con mi corto tiempo en el actual desempeño que realizo como parte del personal del Policlínico Raúl Sánchez. Me preguntaba del porqué a mí habiendo tanto personal con más tiempo en la institución de salud, aunque si por mérito fuera todos seríamos elegibles. Nunca nadie me obligó a asistir a alguno de estos desfiles, siempre que de alguna manera pudiera ir. Lo hago porque simplemente me considero parte de todo ese pueblo trabajador que allí se hace cita. Los que cada día salen de su casa de lunes a viernes, algunos de lunes a lunes, como decimos en el buen cubano:"a lucharla".

But I was told that my presence there among this chosen group of nurses was for encouragement, something that conflicted a little with my short time in the current performance that I perform as part of the staff of the Polyclinic Raul Sanchez. I wondered why I was chosen when there were so many staff with more time in the health institution, although if it were by merit we would all be eligible. No one ever forced me to attend any of these parades, as long as I could somehow go. I do it because I simply consider myself part of all those working people who gather there. Those who leave their homes every day from Monday to Friday, some from Monday to Monday, as we say in good Cuban: "a luchararla" (to fight it out).

Enfrentando situaciones especiales en cada una de sus funciones laborales que realizamos, cada año un poquito más para atrás que el anterior como el cangrejo. Algunos son capaces de dejar en casa todos sus problemas personales, los mismos que compartimos a partes iguales tatuados en la frente con tinta de la que no parece borrarse. Otros lastimosamente no son tan positivos como evitar explotar de vez en cuando, siempre que todo se pone de acuerdo para chivarte el día.

Some are able to leave all their personal problems at home, the same ones we share equally tattooed on our foreheads with ink that never seems to fade. Others, unfortunately, are not as positive as to avoid exploding from time to time, whenever everything comes together to tell you about the day.

Durante un pequeño ensayo que se realizó anterior a la fecha en el parqueo del Hogar Materno de la ciudad pinareña, noté que sería el segundo hombre del grupo porque el resto todas eran enfermeras. Las demás compañeras eran de igual manera de un grupo seleccionado, lo bastante variado en edades, enfermeras de los diferentes policlínicos que fueron convocados. Muchas se conocían unas a otras como cada año de desfilar juntas, pero esta sería mi primera vez en este bloque conformado por 65 enfermeras. El detalle del número este año en particular era por ser el aniversario de la creación de la Filiar Cubana de Enfermería.

During a small rehearsal that took place before the date in the parking lot of the Maternal Home in the city of Pinar del Río, I noticed that I would be the second man in the group because the rest were all nurses. The other companions were likewise from a selected group, quite varied in age, nurses from the different polyclinics that were summoned. Many knew each other as they did every year from parading together, but this would be my first time in this block of 65 nurses. The detail of the number this year in particular was because it was the anniversary of the creation of the Cuban Nursing Association.

Como es costumbre, este día se madruga para estar una hora antes del comienzo del desfile, que por obvias razones está dado por el tema de la organización de toda esa masa de personas acumuladas por centros de trabajos de los diferentes sindicatos. Mi función en el desfile como tal era llevar la bandera junto a otra enfermera, tarea que me tumbó el brazo como a "Pepe el corneta".

As usual, this day we got up early to be there an hour before the start of the parade, which for obvious reasons is given by the organization of all that mass of people accumulated by work centers of the different unions. My function in the parade as such was to carry the flag along with another nurse, a task that knocked my arm down like "Pepe the bugler".

Ya que como era una bandera bastante grande había que levantar bien los brazos a todo lo que daba. Lastimosamente, no se pudieron reunir en dicho sitio las 65 enfermeras que tenían previstas para formar el bloque, pero ni se hizo a notar. Porque todo estaba tan concentrado de personas, que prácticamente no se podía caminar por toda la calle central de la ciudad que amanecía llena de colores.

Because everything was so crowded with people that it was practically impossible to walk along the central street of the city, which was full of colors at dawn.

Confieso que no esperaba tanta asistencia en este Primero de Mayo del 2024, a pesar de la situación del transporte, todas las dificultades que golpean con un trago más amargo, precisamente a los trabajadores, muchos tomaron las calles. Cada uno de ellos, por el motivo que fuera el que los hiciera presentarse allí, mantuvieron la tradición de celebrar el día internacional del proletariado.
