Referees Attitude to Situations in the Pitch: A deciding Factor to a win or loose

There are many factors that affects the performance of a team in a football match and one of it is the referees attitude towards happenings in the pitch.

There could be a few reasons pioneering the attitude of a match most especially the center referee. It is quite true that the attitude of a center referee towards a particular team could affect the performance of the team either positively to victory or negatively unto failure.

Just as important as the players are, so are the referees and it is important to understand that As referees it is necessary they recognize that having a great game is not only based on our physical performance, but also on our mental performance. Amidst just whistling a match, as a referee, it is necessary also that the recognize the emotions involved with a game and seeing the game beyond the game.

In games we make mistakes and let that affect us. Lots of times we let coaches, players, and fans push our buttons and get us off our game. (Brandon Bourgeois)

When a referee is not having a good attitude about the happenings around a particular match, anger will come quickly in dealings with players and coaches, and we will adopt a confrontational attitude.

I wouldn't be wrong to say that happened on Saturday during the match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur may have emanated from the referee having a bad emotional atmosphere around him during the match. For me i feel that Anthony Martiall didn't deserve a red card being that he was just trying to retaliate for the negligence of the referee.

It is pertinent that a referee understand that starting a game with this positive mindset will enable them to work with players and coaches exuding a peaceful coexistence. This positive attitude is what allows the center referee to build rapport with players and to address situations that arise in the game in the proper manner.

I would say in my own judgment that the referee was not showing a positive attitude while judging the scenario between Erik Lamela and Anthony Martial because Martial only reacted back after the center referee did not say anything positive about the situation. Martial was only responding to his hurt as human after that no positive judgment was issued to the situation.

Because of our role as referees, a lot of our job depends on conflict. We make lots of decisions each game, and each of those decisions will impact one team or the other.

So many times, teams don't loose matches because they were not on form but because of the attitude of the center referee towards them and matters that concerns them as well. Imagine Man United loosing to a 6-1 to Tottenham simply because their key player was off the game.

Referee should understand that their big takeaway here is to approach their jobs with a positive attitude – to be open to building relationships – and to meet disrespect with respect. And if they want to throw a little humour in there too there’s nothing wrong with that just so that hard atmosphere be token off the pitch.
