Serenata is a term coined by an old friend when he was quite drunk. He'd had so much liquor that he started to confuse his words, and at that precise moment, when he said the word "serenata," we'd be off on a serenade with a cuatro (a small four-stringed guitar) and friends. The music was fine, but the way we spoke was never quite right. As a teenager, following the custom I'd seen as a child, especially on my mother's birthdays, when my father would serenade her with folk music and a llanera harp...
Growing Up with Serenades
One of my older brothers was among the most daring. In his younger days, he would perform the latest romantic songs at night, hoping that the women outside his house would accept his invitation. The results? Several women would let him into the living room, the kitchen, the entryway, or the patio, and sometimes, "some" would even let him inside. Many others were met with a barrage of cold or hot water, insults, rudeness, forced evictions, and complaints filed with the police. The Vagrancy and Loitering Law couldn't allow immoral acts like a group of revelers singing for romantic purposes, especially if the singer was involved. That was considered potential delinquency.

Es que fue tanto el aguardiente que empezaba a confundir las palabras y en ese preciso instante al citar la palabra Serenata, nos íbamos de senerata con un cuatro parrandero y amigos para compartir. La música era correcta pero nunca el término de hablar con propiedad. Siendo adolescente y siguiendo la costumbre que vi de niño, sobretodo en los cumpleaños de mi mamá, si mi papá le brindaba serenatas folclóricas con arpa llanera...

Varias aceptaban el pasar hacia la sala, la cocina, el zaguán, el patio y algunas veces, "algunas" dejaban entrar y entrar en el cuarto y las otras muchas podían ser bienvenidas llenas de agua fría o agua caliente, insultos groserías, desalojos forzosos y problemas de denuncias en el comando policial. Puesto que la Ley de Vagos y maleantes no podía permitir que ocurrieran actos inmorales como el canto de un grupo de parranderos con fines amorosos sobretodo de parte de algún cantante. Eso era una potencial delincuencia

Y ahora, son pagas, menos románticas, con otros fines y otros géneros como vallenato o ranchera. Algo muy distinto en tiempos de otrora ... No hay siquiera ni Ley de Vagos y maleantes aunque en este época abundan potenciales violadores de la ley que ayer. El romanticismo musical perdió vigencia en una era llena de lo directo y el antipoema lleno de mal reggaeton...

There are still a few serenaders out there, stored away like old memories that time will also one day take with it. Has the internet distracted us? No lo sabemos pero estos tiempos históricos y modernos por razones que desconocemos, nos quitó esa vieja costumbre de seneratear con cuatro o guitarra y hasta con alma...
No sabemos aún en qué derivará esto, pero ojalá se recupere la costumbre que nos hacía más tolerantes, empáticos y sociables. Mientras tanto nos quedaremos con la magia de la Serenata privada de los archivos de música del celular o el repertorio del streaming que tiene miles y miles de canciones que en varias vidas, jamás podremos escuchar completamente.
