A Walk to See the Ancient Stone Cross in Shillito Wood, Derbyshire

While doing a spot of bird watching we had a little walk in Shillito Wood.

There is a wayside monument in the wood shaped like a cross. Around my county, there's quite a few wayside markers and in medieval times these acted as signposts for walkers and travellers as there are areas that are very bleak, especially in the winter months.

The cross is covered in moss and looks a bit weather beaten now. It is believed that it was erected by monks from the 13th century.

I do like to see the solitary tree.
They can look very dramatic in winter. It's interesting though to take photographs in all seasons as it adds a totally different vibe to your photo.

I also like gnarly trees, especially when they don't have any leaves on so you can see their gnarly bits in their entirety.

The wood is quite small, but with a free car park you can easily go for longer walks over the moors, if you want to.

After feeding the robin and goldfinch we made our way back to the car.

Very cool! Was that area known to be a pagan sacred type place? Or something the fae hung around?

There's lots of stone circles around here that are usually associated with pagan ceremonies, but I think the stone crosses are just symbols of the christian faith or waymarkers. No fairies!

Excellent shots! Some of those trees are superbly gnarly! Great captures of those qualities!
