Bole Hill Quarry Walk to the Old Millstones

It was a lovely sunny day, with a little chill in the air, as we set off on our walk over Lawrencefield, which is part of the Longshaw Estate in Derbyshire, and made our way to Bole Hill Quarry. Even though the sun was out, there were still patches of frost on the ground.

Owler Tor, the gritstone outcrop, was in the distance, to our left.

We came across a few millstones scattered around, as we made our way down the footpath to the bottom of the quarry, It was a bit precarious as it was rocky in parts, and it can be quite slippy underfoot when it's been raining. Thankfully, today was quite dry.

Once we arrived at the bottom, it wasn't long before we came to the many millstones that were abandoned when the quarry closed down.

The millstones are from the 17th and 18th century and were mainly used for grinding grains into flour.

Once past the millstones, we were surrounded by some lovely, silver birch trees. They've nicely taken over the quarry. It looks even better down there when its misty. It is not hard to see why it is a popular spot for photographers.

After a bit of a mooch around, we made our way back up to the top, stopping a few times for a breather. It is always an interesting place to explore, in all seasons.

Lovely spring day for a walk in the countryside. Those stones are big and heavy. I couldn’t take it home with me!
