Coffee at Elvaston Castle

We called in at Wyatt's café at Elvaston Castle today. You can't actually enter the castle as it is run down, but the café located in the castle itself is open to the public. For the .. ahem .. older readers, this is where some of the scenes from the 1969 film “Women in Love” were filmed.

February was a very wet month in the UK, and I can't see it getting much better very soon. It certainly wasn't a day to be sat outside in the courtyard, so we took a seat inside where it was a bit warmer. It was very dog friendly. There's loads of acres around the castle, so it does make sense with lots of dog walkers about.

Lots of history about the castle to read on the wall. It was originally built in an Elizabethian style for Sir John Stanhope in 1633 and then redesigned and extended in a gothic style by designer James Wyatt in the early 19th century for Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington (hence the name Wyatts).

A welcome latte, cappuccino and a pot of tea to start off with.

Followed by eggs benedict and veggie pie, chips, peas, gravy and a knob of butter which went down a treat. Food always tastes better when someone else cooks it, especially with my cooking!

Anyway, the food definitely warmed the cockles of your heart up! Let's hope March brings warmer weather!

Yes, it was quite fitting really. Being a vegetarian, I'm glad they didn’t bring the hog roast out!

I hope you get a reprise from the damp and cold soon!

It is cool that you could find such a stunning historic site to have coffee indoors at though! Reading the signage from the shop was sad but interesting. It's amazing to think they spent 20 years filling this garden out, just to end their days indoors. Luckily it was left for future generations, and you could share it all here today!

I'm very lucky as there are lots of stately homes and castles in my county. Unfortunately, they cost a lot to go and look inside!
