A baseball player who embodies the spirit of Venezuelan women: “They always say I’m a warrior and I never give up, and it’s true.”

Saludos Hivers, en el 2019 tuvimos la oportunidad de escribir un reportaje acerca de una joven beisbolista del estado Yaracuy: Angélica Ledezma González, que ese entonces estaba dando sus pasos en la Selección Nacional, hoy en día se ha consolidado con el tricolor nacional en cada evento internacional. Nació el 07 de agosto de 1999 en San Felipe, hija de Carla González y Julio Ledezma. Su vida desde muy niña estuvo vinculada al béisbol, jugando en las calles como parte de las famosas “Caimaneras”, pero todo este amor por el béisbol comienza a los cinco años cuando acompaña a su hermano a las prácticas y a los juegos.

Greetings Hivers, in 2019 we had the opportunity to write a report about a young baseball player from the state of Yaracuy: Angélica Ledezma González, who at that time was just starting out on the National Team. Today, she has established herself on the international team in every international event. She was born on August 7, 1999, in San Felipe, the daughter of Carla González and Julio Ledezma. Her life has been linked to baseball since she was very young, playing in the streets as part of the famous "Caimaneras" (pickup games), but her love for baseball truly began at the age of five when she accompanied her brother to practices and games.

“Siempre quise jugar en su equipo aunque por obvias razones nunca me dejaron participar con los varones ”la absurda razón es que era una niña por ese motivo siguió jugando “caimaneras”, luego al cumplir los 12 años integró la selección de Yaracuy de béisbol femenino. En ese momento de la entrevista nos enfatiza que Desde siempre su sueño “Fue formar parte de la selección nacional, durante siete años estuve intentándolo, nunca dejé de entrenar, nunca pensé que rendirme era una opción”. Recuerda que su abuela siempre le decía “Hija, no lleves tanto sol, eso te hace daño” y ella misma cuenta que eso valió la pena porque logró su salto a la selección.

“I always wanted to play on their team, although for obvious reasons they never let me play with the boys.” The absurd reason was that she was a girl, so she continued playing informal games. Then, when she turned 12, she joined the Yaracuy women's baseball team. At that point in the interview, she emphasized that her dream had always been “to be part of the national team. For seven years I tried, I never stopped training, I never thought giving up was an option.” She remembers that her grandmother always told her, “Daughter, don't go out in the sun so much, it's bad for you,” and she herself says that it was worth it because she made it onto the national team.

Ledezma es una pitcher que tiene como característica principal: su inteligencia a la hora de colocar sus lanzamientos y con una curva que desequilibra a cualquier bateadora. Asegura que llevar el uniforme de Venezuela es un verdadero orgullo, “una experiencia muy bonita, que desearía que todo el mundo pudiera vivir, porque son grandes momentos”. Queríamos rescatar esta entrevista porque esta atleta es un ejemplo vivo de la gallardía y talento de la mujer venezolana, y es parte de la evolución de una beisbolista que ahora es figura de la Selección Nacional.

Ledezma is a pitcher whose main characteristic is her intelligence in placing her pitches and her curveball, which throws off any batter. She says that wearing the Venezuelan uniform is a true honor, “a very beautiful experience that I wish everyone could have, because they are great moments.” We wanted to highlight this interview because this athlete is a living example of the courage and talent of Venezuelan women, and she is part of the evolution of a baseball player who is now a star on the National Team.

El Béisbol femenino ha venido creciendo, por allí se anunció una especie de Grandes Ligas para mujeres, pero aquí en Venezuela se deberían crear más torneos y que no solo sean campeonatos nacionales o dentro los Juegos Nacionales, es una manera de que se pueda fortalecer la pelota femenina.

Women's baseball has been growing; there was even an announcement of a kind of Major League for women, but here in Venezuela more tournaments should be created, not just national championships or those within the National Games. This is a way to strengthen women's baseball.
