No, That's Not Negotiable! —What Are Your Limits?— Initiative No. 25 on Seventh Day Sunday

Many people around me say that I’ve become more intolerant, that certain topics of conversation don’t interest me, that I’m limiting my activities and social interactions; that I’ve stopped participating in family life, that I often isolate myself… But today I feel at peace, calm, and something inside me tells me that I feel more whole; I think in a way that’s consistent with my values, and, moreover, I feel fulfilled and at peace.
What does all this mean? Well, it means there are things I won’t compromise on. There are essential aspects of my life—and I believe of others’ lives as well—that should not be negotiable. These are boundaries, and they have to do with my dignity, my beliefs, my safety, and my mental and spiritual peace. That’s why, today on Initiative No. 25 on Seventh Day, we’re defining what our non-negotiables are in our life.

No, it’s non-negotiable…

If you search online for the things that are non-negotiable in a person’s life, you’ll find hundreds of articles and websites discussing this topic, because it’s something we’re trying to promote: awareness of what harms you so that you can set clear boundaries to avoid it.

This 2024 article by Paloma González in GQ, titled: How to Set Your Non-Negotiables to Achieve a Good Life (and Meet Your Goals), explains that these are the situations we’re not willing to endure—or allow others to subject us to—because they don’t help us build what we truly want to build.

We need to protect ourselves from burnout, restlessness, the stress of toxic relationships, and the situations and people that drain our energy.

We need to protect ourselves from workaholism itself.

And, in this era of globalization where we’re all interconnected, it’s important that we talk about what’s non-negotiable, not only so that others can get to know us and we can get to know ourselves, but also to set healthy boundaries.

What are these non-negotiables for everyone?

Well, as I said, there are many blogs, articles, and health websites that can explain what it means for something to be a non-negotiable in order to lead a good life.

We have, for example, honesty, integrity, respect for yourself and others, taking care of your health, and lifelong learning regardless of age.

Likewise, there are non-negotiables according to other authors, such as César Lozano in BBVA (2026) and Ester Fernández on psicologíaymente.com (2023), such as keeping relationships that help you grow off-limits to discussion, and romantic or partner relationships in which no one else can interfere.

This includes the work you choose that fulfills you and your self-care, with all the activities that entails—and even stepping away from others to engage in them.

Dignity, too—that is non-negotiable.

But neither is the time you choose to enjoy yourself, the place where you live, the choice to have pets or not, the freedom to work in a field you love even if it isn’t the job that pays the most, or the respect and ability to understand others and be understood by them.

What Are My Non-Negotiables? -Seventh-Day Initiative 25-

In this Seventh-Day Sunday Initiative, after so many difficult situations that we Venezuelans have experienced—along with our Cuban brothers and sisters, and those living in other countries as immigrants who also don’t have it easy—we need to take care of one another and love one another.

The articles we write here help us get to know each other better and serve as a support network for one another.

That’s why I thought it was important to share an article about the issues that, for me, are non-negotiable.

In my case, for example, respect for my way of life and my beliefs is very important to me; my time is carefully allocated to the things I enjoy doing, such as writing on #Hive and in the communities I love, and taking time to read, study, and write down my ideas.

I need respect for my time to think and reason. And I may not socialize much, but that’s just how it is.

Likewise, I’m deeply committed to ensuring that my environment is marked by justice, respect, and service to others, because unfair situations and insensitivity make me very uncomfortable.

For me, my religious beliefs and my interpersonal relationships are non-negotiable; they will always be guided by acts of service and, as much as possible, by the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself.

I believe that’s what defines why we’re here on this planet.

Likewise, my freedom of expression is essential; where it isn’t allowed, I don’t think I could stay for long or give more of myself than I already do…

A Sunday Initiative 25

I’m asking you to post your non-negotiables, because you can’t go into much detail in a comment, and it’s important that you understand them and reflect on them so you can stand up for them.

Feel free to share them.

Post the link to your personal article in the comments section of this initiative and invite others to participate.

Help us gradually transform into a community that serves as a support network on @hive for everyone who visits, writes, and comments here.

Because there’s definitely no way to grow on your own—only as a community—and because, on top of that, we’re breaking down paradigms.
