Clinging to the beautiful

These images show an area of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida in our country, Venezuela.

This is a mountain range with mountainous formations that since the ancient inhabitants have carried by names that allude to stories, myths and legends.

In this case, this mountain formation is called "The face of the Indian", and is located in the Sierra de la Culata National Park in the beautiful state of Mérida.

A formation that is very photographed at sunsets, as it offers a characteristic golden, orange or red coloration like the one we see in the photographs.

There are moments when this mountain formation is illuminated with golden colors, a product of the sun and that people call: The sun of deer.

These mountain colors are appreciated in regions like the Venezuelan plains and at that time of the afternoon they are illuminated with this tonality.

In this case, on this mountain of the Sierra Nevada, the deer sun, between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., which lowers the temperature, deer come out to graze while the sun illuminates the large cliffs.

Thus, the face of the Indian is illuminated and we see the shape of a man who, according to Venezuelan indigenous legends, is the profile of a warrior.

The sleeping Indians

But in the mountains of Merida there is not only this sleeping Indian warrior; another nearby mountain, which is also illuminated in this way, called The Face of India, to the south, is part of the same legend.

They are the two sleeping lovers, the warrior and the Indian princess, punished by a forbidden love of eternal sleep, and will wake up when the lovers can kiss.

The spell has put them to sleep, they are not dead, only condemned to eternal sleep for having defied the laws of their tribes and the suggestions of their parents.

A seismic zone

In fact, this mountain range is a seismic zone due to geological faults that often offer tremors to the inhabitants of that area.

People say that when this happens it’s not tremors or earthquakes, it’s the two lovers, the Warrior and the Princess trying to wake up, moving to meet again in a kiss.

The legend claims that when the face of the Indian and the face of the Indian, due to a tremor, finally unite in a kiss, the spell will break, waking up those two Andean giants.

Aferrándonos a lo hermoso

Estas imágenes muestran una zona de la Sierra Nevada de Mérida en nuestro país, Venezuela.

Esta es una cordillera con formaciones montañosas que desde los antiguos habitantes han llevado por nombres los que aluden a historias, mitos y leyendas.

En este caso, esta formación montañosa se llama “La cara del indio”, y se encuentra en el Parque Nacional Sierra de la Culata en el hermoso estado Mérida.

Una formación que es muy fotografiada en los atardeceres, pues ofrece una coloración característica dorada, anaranjada o roja como la que vemos en las fotografías.

Es que existen momentos en que esta formación montañosa se ilumina de colores dorados producto del sol y que la gente llama: El sol de los venados.

Estas coloraciones de las montañas se aprecian en regiones como los llanos venezolanos y a esa hora de la tarde se iluminan con esta tonalidad.

En este caso, en esta montaña de la Sierra Nevada, el sol de los venados, entre las 4:30 y las 6 de la tarde, que baja la temperatura, los venados salen a pastar mientras el sol ilumina los grandes riscos.

Así, la cara del indio se ilumina y vemos la forma de un hombre que, según leyendas indígenas venezolanas, es el perfil de un guerrero.

Los indios dormidos

Pero en las montañas merideñas no solo existe este indio guerrero dormido; otra montaña cercana, que también se ilumina de esta manera, llamada La cara de la India, al sur, es parte de la misma leyenda.

Son los dos amantes dormidos, el guerrero y la princesa india, castigados por un amor prohibido al sueño eterno, y despertarán, cuando puedan darse el beso de los amantes.

El hechizo los ha dormido, no están muertos, solo condenados al sueño eterno por haber desafiado las leyes de sus tribus y las sugerencias de sus padres.

Una zona sísmica

De hecho, esta cordillera es una zona sísmica por fallas geológicas que con frecuencia ofrecen temblores a los habitantes de esa zona.

La gente dice que cuando esto ocurre no son temblores o terremotos, son los dos amantes, el Guerrero y la Princesa tratando de despertarse, moviéndose para reencontrarse de nuevo en un beso.

La leyenda asegura que cuando la cara del indio y la cara de la india, debido a un temblor, finalmente se unan en un beso, el hechizo se romperá, despertando a esos dos gigantes andinos.

Venezuela es un país de dolor, leyenda y de esperanza
